Brutal and unforgiving; it quickly loses its charm past the first few levels.

Warning: Spoilers
In what was an attempt at a humorous parody of the film "They Live", Bart vs the Space Mutants used a mechanic in which a pair of sunglasses allow Bart to distinguish which characters were, in fact, aliens in disguise. This concept is cute, albeit it is only used for the sake of gathering coins from said aliens by jumping on their heads. The coins can then be used for purchasing a little arsenal of things to accomplish your goals in each level; the first being a hunt to remove all things purple colored by making them red, but the following level is a mundane hat-hunt where you jump into characters to remove their hats. It makes no sense, and it's this level where the game's ridiculously difficult platforming reaches its apex. This persists throughout, with each new level featuring some odd thing in the world that has to be removed or altered to finish your goal, with the jumps becoming more absurdly difficult along the way. It's not a particularly enjoyable experience, even if you are a diehard fan of the series, and despite having grown up with it, I find Bart's Nightmare to be the more enjoyable Simpsons title of the time, or the arcade game for that matter. Worth playing for the unique concept and overall charm, but also worth rage quitting for the platforming. If you've played it before as a child as I had, some nostalgiac tug at your heart will prevent you from hating it entirely, but I can't see anyone without the same sense of nostalgia enjoying anything about this game.

It's almost as useless as that lemon-shaped rock over there but fun in its sweet 8-bit way, one of the gems of the colourful array of Simpsons games from back in the day...

Why couldn't they have just let Bart shoot the cute little bouncing aliens instead of de-purple-ising everything? So let's be clear about this very old game: sometimes to appreciate the good, you have to also appreciate the bad, and Bart vs the Space Mutants was certainly a bad game. But the thing is, like with many old hunks of junk from the early childhood years, to me this game has great sentimental value attached to it! I must have been about six or so when me and my two brothers would play this a whole lot on our dusty old Nintendo, at the time we didn't even register what a hellishly frustrating little platformer and endurance test it was to play, we just played it anyway and loved it, and we worked around its faults which were a part of the game play, because it had Bart Simpson in it who you played as as he spray painted his way to victory against evil alien space mutants that were taking over the planet with the dumbest invasion plan ever!! I can remember how amazingly magical and new The Simpsons as a show was to watch back then and this game among others is kind of tied into those old feelings for me, it had a little of the theme tune, and a colourful representation of some of the parts of Springfield, and it had cherry bombs and bottle rockets and at the time it was fun because at he end of the day, we were playing The Simpsons, and for its time, it was freaking cool!

not just for sega- one of the classic NES games from my childhood

Though if you try to find it now it will only be as a collectible or as a used item on ebay, Bart vs the Space Mutants was one of those great, if fairly simple, RPG games from those early days of video games- make that before things went past 16 megabytes or whatever it was. The simple task of the game was for Bart to kill as many space mutants as possible, without getting killed off or losing some by way of the X-ray glasses Bart used. It was before the show became as sophisticated as it would some two or three years after the game first appeared, so the humor is a little on the crude side (maybe more than a little). But for kids it's a really cool trip in going through the motions of the game- if sometimes a bit difficult- and as a die-hard fan it's quite a alien-ridden treat.

One of the best Sega Genesis games I have ever played

THE SIMPSONS: BART VS. THE SPACE MUTANTS, in my opinion, is one of the best Sega Genesis games I have ever played. Even though it's been awhile since I've had a Sega Genesis system and game, I enjoy it very much. In addition, even though I've never made it to the last level, I enjoy the game very much as well. When I have enough money to buy a Sega Genesis system and games, this is definitely one game that's going to be on my list. Before I wrap this up, I'd like to say that the people at Sega Genesis know how to keep video game fanatics entertained. Now, in conclusion, if you're a video game fanatic, this is definitely one you'll want to play and own.
