Lane Garrison Scripting An Emotional Football Movie

9 December 2009 8:40 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

The United States prison system has over two million people incarcerated around the country. It is a constant source of debate, dividing the nation on issues such as mandatory minimum sentences, three-strike laws, and privatization. If we were to simply take a tip from Hollywood, however, all of the problems could be solved tomorrow. All we would have to do is make an all-prisoner football league. Despite the fact that this idea has been done multiple times (two versions of The Longest Yard, Gridiron Gang, and the documentary it was based on to name a few) former Prison Break star and recent inmate Lane Garrison is now scripting One Heart, a screenplay about a football team made up of young convicts. According to THR the story is based on a team from Gainesville State School in Texas who lost every game in 2008, but in their final game, the opposition's crowd »

Dwayne Johnson finds Faster

30 September 2009 12:40 AM, PDT | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

Dwayne Johnson has signed on to star in the action drama Faster. It looks like he might be ready to switch out from his family comedy mode for a while, since he's playing an ex-con who goes on a rampage to take out the men who murdered his brother a decade ago. Turns out they were in the middle of a heist when they got double crossed. Phil Joanou, who directed Johnson in Gridiron Gang and was planning to make this one, has dropped out, so CBS Films is negotiating with Notorious filmmaker George Tillman Jr to take over. If he signs...

Dwayne Johnson Returns to Action with Faster

29 September 2009 9:55 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

I’m happy to report that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is starring in an action movie again.  I really, really am.  I thought that we had lost the once promising new action star to kiddie flicks (The Tooth Fairy?!), but it seems that we are going to be treated to Johnson kicking some ass again on the big screen soon.  The actor is now in negotiations to star in the action drama “Faster” for director George Tillman Jr. (”Notorious”) and you can get all the details when you hit the jump.

Variety tells us that Johnson will be playing an ex-con who “is bent on avenging the death of his brother, who was murdered 10 years earlier when the two were double-crossed during a heist.”  The film was originally going to be directed by Phil Joanou (”Gridiron Gang”), but the director dropped out several months ago.  George Tillman Jr. will not »

Dwayne Johnson: From Tooth Fairy To Ex-Con

29 September 2009 8:45 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Tonight I caught a preview for The Tooth Fairy, the movie in which Dwayne Johnson plays a tough hockey player turned into the mythical giver of money. So forgive me for not quite being able to take seriously the concept of Faster, an "action drama" starring Johnson as an ex-con who must avenge his brother's murder. George Tillman Jr., who most recently made the biopic Notorious, is planning to direct, according to Variety. He's replacing Phil Joanou, who directed Johnson in Gridiron Gang. It's probably high time that Johnson makes something other than a family friendly comedy, but that doesn't necessarily mean I have to buy into it. Let's get past Tooth Fairy first, and then consider whether this concept is actually feasible. »

Tyler Perry 'Can Do' Good at the Box Office

13 September 2009 5:30 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Tyler Perry's Madea swung her weight at the box office again, handily topping a modest weekend at the box office with her latest appearance in Tyler Perry's I Can Do Bad All By Myself. The weekend also saw a passable start for the animated 9 and the failures of two thrillers, Sorority Row and Whiteout. Overall business was off seven percent from the same weekend last year, when Burn After Reading and Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys opened. I Can Do Bad All By Myself yanked an estimated $24 million out of approximately 3,200 screens at 2,255 sites. It was the third highest-grossing debut for a Tyler Perry movie, though slightly above average in terms of attendance, and a new high for one of his Fall releases, topping The Family That Preys ($17.4 million) and Why Did I Get Married? ($21.4 million). Though not named in the title like Perry's biggest hits, Madea was »

Cash For Clunkers? The Government Should Have Hired Xzibit

28 July 2009 3:11 PM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

The governments "Cash for Clunkers" program is pretty brilliant, as it not only encourages people to buy cars (thus sending some cash into the anemic automotive industry) but it also forces people to embrace more fuel-efficient cars. The full list of eligible vehicles is online, but the gist is that if you have a car that was made after 1984 and gets less than 18 miles per gallon, you can snag yourself a $4,500 credit — not a small chunk of change by any means.

But with all these people trading up their old cars, does that mean that fewer people are going to go the "Pimp My Ride" route? That will probably make Xzibit pretty sad.

The rapper spent six seasons taking automotive disasters and tricking them out with monitors, rims, stereos, fish tanks, video games and the occasional novelty horn. Xzibit wasn't just the host — he was genuinely enthusiastic about car culture »

The Runaways Adds Brett Cullen

8 July 2009 9:54 AM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

With The Runaways band cast and already shooting scenes, fringe roles are starting to fill in. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Brett Cullen has joined the cast to play the alcoholic father of Cherie Currie (Dakota Fanning) father. Brett is expected to draw the character's traits from Cherie's memoir "Neon Angel" as well as his countless years of television and movie work including the original V, Lost, and Gridiron Gang. In addition to Dakota, The Runaways stars Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett, Scout Taylor-Compton as Lita Ford, Alia Shawkat as fictional Robin (since legally Micki Steele's name cannot be used), and Stella Meave as Sandy West. If you haven't already, be sure to check out the first pictures of all five Runaways actresses in character either rehearsing or shooting a scene. The Runaways will be in theaters sometime in 2010. »

Brett Cullen joins The Runaways

Brett Cullen will join the cast of River Road's "The Runaways," a tale of Joan Jett and her band. Apparently, he'll play the alcoholic father of Runaway member Cherie Currie (played by Dakota Fanning). The role will be taking from Currie's memoir "Neon Angel" which documented her addition. Veteran on both film and TV offerings, Cullen's previous credits include "Gridiron Gang," "National Treasure," "The Life Before Her Eyes" and "Ghost Rider." One of the most memorable performances I would say is his role in J.J. Abrams' »

Four More Possible Directors Named for Conan Reboot

13 May 2009 6:25 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

A couple of days ago, we reported on the news that V For Vendetta director James McTeigue is a strong possibility to direct the new Conan movie [1] in place of Brett Ratner. While he continues to be in the running, there have been some developments in the story since then, with a handful of other directors revealed on the short list as well. According to Chud [2], there are three other candidates in the running right now. And they are: Christophe Gans (Brotherhood of the Wolf, Silent Hill) Neil Marshall (Doomsday, The Descent) Marcus Nispel (Friday the 13th, Pathfinder) Out of those three, I think Neil Marshall would be my favourite, but probably any of them could work. Now, late yesterday Latino Review [3] added one more name to the list, someone who they claim to be the number one choice: Phil Joanou (State of Grace, Gridiron Gang). They seem pretty excited about the choice, »

Dwayne Johnson Getting Faster

7 May 2009 9:58 AM, PDT | www.canmag.com | See recent CanMag news »

Dwayne Johnson is considering the return to edgy action with Faster, an action drama from CBS Films.

Dwayne Johnson for Faster

I can't blame the guy for returning to what he does best, as his family comedy projects never really got the best reviews; though they did okay at the box office.

Directed by Phil Joanou off a script by scribes Joe and Tony Gayton, Faster will have Johnson play an ex-con bent on avenging the death of his brother, murdered 10 years earlier when the two were double-crossed during a heist.

Phil should be familiar with The Rock, considering that he directed him in Gridiron Gang. »

Dwayne Johnson Gets Back Into Action With "Faster"

7 May 2009 6:34 AM, PDT | icelebz.com | See recent iCelebz news »

Former professional wrestler Dwayne Johnson is shunning his kid-friendly image for now and is returning to hardcore action. The "Gridiron Gang" star is in final talks with CBS Films for "Faster."

The 37-year-old WWF champ-turned-actor will play an ex-con bent on avenging the death of his brother, who was murdered years earlier when they were double-crossed during a heist.

The film would put him back into "edgy action territory," according to Variety. Johnson recently starred in family-friendly films, including the Disney blockbuster "Race to Witch Mountain."

Phil Joanou, who directed him in "Gridiron," will be helming the script written by Joe and Tony Gayton. Production is slated to commence in August.

Dwayne Johnson Goes Faster -- Speeds right past super-stardom

7 May 2009 | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Written by Matt Goldberg Remember that great scene in "The Rundown" where Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson walks by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Schwarzenegger just says "Have fun," and we all saw one charismatic action icon passing the torch to another and assumed that A-list stardom was only a couple films away for Johnson? Yeah…that really hasn't happened yet. If anything, Johnson has just jumped into the family comedies where he has found greater success than straight action movies. But you have to keep re-upping your action bonafides before you put on a tutu for "The Gameplan" or "Race to Witch Mountain" or Johnson's upcoming film, "The Tooth Fairy". So Johnson is re-teaming with his "Gridiron Gang" director Phil Joanou for "Faster". Here's the brief synopsis [via Variety]: Johnson plays ex-con bent on avenging the »

The Rock Eyes a Return to Action Films

7 May 2009 12:41 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson entered Hollywood as an action star with many believing he may be the next Arnold Schwarzenegger, so much so he had something of a hand-off moment in a club scene in The Rundown. However, since that time Johnson has had a couple of action movies, but recently he has resigned himself to more family oriented features such as The Game Plan, Race to Witch Mountain and the upcoming Fox feature, Tooth Fairy. Well, it looks like that is about to change as he has been cast in the revenge feature, Faster, for CBS Films. Johnson will star as an ex-con bent on avenging the death of his brother, murdered 10 years earlier when the two were double-crossed during a heist. Okay, so it's an action film, but boy does this sound like a tired storyline. Faster will re-team Johnson with his Gridiron Gang director Phil Joanou with »

Dwayne Johnson Goes Faster

7 May 2009 12:41 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

His Rockness, Dwayne Johnson, has been lavishing his talents on kiddie and family-friendly fare of late, but he's finally taking a break from kicking it PG-rated, with the news that he's in final talks to star in Faster, an edgier action drama. The plot sees El Rockerino play an ex-con who is bent on avenging the death of his brother, who died ten years before after the two were double-crossed during a heist. If we were betting persons here, we'd guess the same double-cross left the Dwaynemeister in prison for the interim, and it's only now on his release that he's seeking payback.Filming's due to begin in August, with Phil Joanou (who worked with the Johnsonator on Gridiron Gang) directing and a script by Joe and Tony Gayton (who wrote The Shepherd: Border Patrol and Murder By Numbers respectively). Let's hope that the film allows The Rock to open »
