Low key expose on predatory hollywood proclivities
michaeladrion26 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I remember watching a few eps of this show back in '07 and liking it due to its similar production values to Degrassi TNG -- I'm a huge TNG mark! Their similar look is due to the shows sharing producer Linda Schuyler. Although these shows share a similar aesthetic, they differ in mores. Degrassi's purpose was to speak on the human condition as it relates to being a developing teen in an ever changing world with a theme of the week structure including but not limited to: abuse, sexuality, bullying, and peer pressure. However, Instant Star's focus is narrowed down to an inversion of the Andy Warhol quote, which reads "In the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes." In the case of Instant Star, "In our future, one person will be famous in 15 minutes." After that one person, in this case, 15year old Jude Harrison -- a cute mash up of the Beetles classic Hey Jude and Beetles rhythm guitarist George Harrison -- spends 4 seasons being exploited, dropped from her label, kidnapped, colluded against, kidnapped again, shamed, resigned to her label, extorted, dropped again, and embezzled by a relative. Most of which happened before senior prom. At the core of the show, like all TV, is a love story. During it's run, Instant Star had more instant love triangles than instant hits. By season 2 Jude was in 2 at once, which both involved her producer Tommy Q. Tommy was in a silly late 90's boy band "Boyz Attack", but has moved on as a serious producer in charge of getting the best art out of Jude. Tommy takes a very very hands on approach with Jude, and although he does not make the first move he instigates a series long intimate relationship with Jude. Jude of 15. Tommy Q of 23(ish). The show makes it a point to have an episode per season that revolves around her birthday. The countdown to Jude being legal tender is a crucial plot point. I enjoyed the heart of the show. Everyone knows their art and are written and portrayed with depth and dimension. However, while watching the show again, after the #meetoo movement, I was made inherently aware of the process and nature of Tommy as predatory industry groomer. In the beginning, Tommy was a good producer for Jude, until later when it became apparent that she was too codependent upon him, and as a result failed considerably when it came time to self produce her 3rd album without him guiding or subverting her choices. I mean by your third album you should be able to figure out, on your own, that kettle drum doesn't belong on every song on your project. Unless you're doing an album of Beethoven covers limit the use of kettle drum to one song. Looking at the show now gives the viewer edification on how we have so many #metoo testimonies and how it may no longer take as much time to get famous, but how the cost is much higher.

Awesome Show!!
ktatplant12 August 2005
I am also a teenage girl, and I have no idea what in the world the previous reviewer was watching, but it definitely was NOT "Instant Star." The "Paris Hilton-like" characters she referred to, first of all, are considered to be the antagonists keeping Jude, the main character, from pursuing her dream of making music. Jude is a 16 year-old girl who wins a singing contest and gets a record deal. I'm also not quite sure about the sex that the previous reviewer complained tainted the entire show since Jude receives her first kiss a few episodes into the show, claiming she wanted to wait so that it would be special. Your right, that's very scandalous compared to all of those "wholesome" teen shows out there. All in all, Jude is a very grounded, MORAL girl in the show, and she is coming of age while surrounded by the antics and hype that are part of the music business. I highly recommend this show for anyone looking for a different kind of show with great music and an awesome cast.

Amazingly Good Show!
kdmom27 November 2010
I was 37 when I found this show, so it is not just for teenagers! The music is incredible, I have tons of the songs from the series on my ipod and it adds so much credibility to the story line that the soundtrack is so good. But beyond the music, the characters and acting are great and the dialog is wonderful and truly believable. The story lines capture your attention and hold it. The love stories woven throughout are some of the best I've ever seen! As a music lover, I loved the behind the scenes look at the music business, but to me, above all else, this is one amazing love story(not to mention a cast of beautiful people to watch)!! I bought the whole series on DVD. Be prepared to cry your eyes out, laugh out loud, scream at the TV and sing along.

Lovely.

This show is addicting, every single little thing about it is perfect. It's sweet, funny, and unique. It is different from other shows, since it explores different issues, of those in the music industry. You learn so much about Jude, a girl who has trouble to survive in this fast-paced industry, and to make things worse for her, she starts falling for her producer. All of the actors portray their characters excellently, the plot lines, to be honest, can get a little too dramatic. But nevertheless, the songs are so beautiful, it is pretty much the only thing you'll be listening to for a while.

This show is amazing, it's worth watching for sure.

Bad Role Models
salamander7629 May 2006
Instant Star is a show that gives nothing positive for children to look up to. The frequent making-out scenes with various characters trading boyfriends is sad. This show glorifies being a shallow, vacuous, airhead. This show glorifies cheating and moving ahead based on who you know, not what you know. I don't think that a single episode has shown anyone trying to do their homework, going to school, or doing anything that has to do with education. It is all about the characters getting their relationship grooves on.

The few scenes that show anyone working on their music in the studio are always set up so that ten seconds later one of the girls is making out with her producer or someone from the band. The other time-waster is the characters complaining about how unhappy they are, or talking about their relationships. Not to mention that the woman who plays Jude is supposed to be 15 years old but she looks about 35. Most of the other so-called teens look way into their twenties. Maybe Noggin was concerned that this show would get banned if they used actual teenagers? That this show is marketed towards teenagers is pathetic, especially since it is on Noggin, which presumably is not supposed to greedily exploit the curiosity of young people who are the target audience of this horrible show.

Instant Success
susi_feliz23 May 2008
At first, I wasn't sure about the show, I thought it was another high-school-drama T.V. program. Turns out it is great, from the very first note from her guitar to the last monologue on the show, you get INSTANTly hooked! Instant Star is about Jude Harrison (Alexz Johnson) a talented young girl that wins an American Idol alike show. The show revolves around her, she sings pretty much all the songs from it (except for a few due to some label issues) and let me just her voice is stunning. Tommy Q (Tim Rozon) is her producer and they have a "thing" going on. Watching how this develops is just so refreshing. The other characters play a great role in Jude's life, but just to mention some: Jamie, Sadie, Darius, etc.

During the last seasons of IS, you've seen Jude grow and become a mature and great looking young woman, showing how the music business is like. Her relationship with boys and her passion for music and lyrics.

Alexz Johnson is by far one of the best singers I've ever heard, and a great actress you like to see on screen. If you want to find some great music, acting and have a great time watching TV, don't miss it, Instant Star is the show for you.

parent thinks it's great

This show is about a not very popular teenage girl who wins a contest because she's a good songwriter, then gets a recording contract that doesn't turn out to be what she expected. She goes on to discover that all the things that go along with stardom are pretty hard to handle--especially for someone still learning to just maneuver through life. She's a sweet and talented kid, and the show is about her joys and disappointments. BTW--The songs are all really sung by the actress (unlike most TV shows where they overdub) as can be seen in the credits.

I watch this show every Friday and anxiously await the next episodes. The actors are all talented, nobody shows excessive skin, and nobody talks potty-mouth or jumps in bed with ANYONE. Teen angst, yes, but told poignantly and with talent. The writing is great, music as heart wrenching as any teen could want, and acting superb.

And now for my input on the topic of sex. I am a fairly strict and prudish parent and I think this show is fantastic. As far as the sex and sexuality in this show, I disagree with what another IMDb poster/reviewer said. The star doesn't sleep with anyone to get ahead, or for any other reason--she doesn't even sleep with anyone--at least not in the shows that have aired so far; I'm not sure what TV series this person watched, but what s/he describes is not the series "Instant Star" that is airing now on The-N. The most "sex" in this show (as of writing date) is kissing. And it's not passionate as much as it is sweet and romantic. Without giving anything away, I can say that each kiss has happened for good reason and isn't just gratuitous making out scenes. The show is about relationships of all kinds--family, friends, self, and romantic. I've seen TV commercials with far more sexuality than this TV show! I'm not saying the actors aren't sexy and gushing charisma, I'm just saying that the scripts and drama are plenty chaste.

Not only does this show give some insight as to what the world is like after winning an American Idol like contest, but it also has the romance and drama of The OC, the wit and humor of Degrassi, and a fabulous soundtrack to boot. Instant Star follows the winner of a singing talent contest that is comparable to American Idol, as she makes her dreams come true. Jude Harrison is a teenager who is just getting used to the whole fame thing- spending hours in the studio recording, going to school, going on tours, promoting her music every spare second she has.. and managing to add a bit of romance in her life. Instant Star shows us the life we wish we had in the spotlight, and also some real life issues that everyone has to face whether they're famous or not. Instant Star is an even balance between Jude Harrison's work and her real life- it is never more about romance than the music. The music featured on Instant Star is definitely what keeps the show together. Every episode features a brand new song that connects to the show and what Jude Harrison is up to. Alexz Johnson, who plays Jude Harrison, has written many of the songs featured in the television show, and you can see the connection between the song and the artist when she performs. As a teenager myself, I can watch and see issues that I am currently dealing with in my own life be acted out on Instant Star. I love that I am able to connect my own life with that of Jude Harrison's, it definitely brings every celebrity down to my own level- everyone is human, everyone has problems in their lives. Instant Star has just the right amount of drama, plenty of comedy, and the most adorable romances. The music in Instant Star is great, Alexz Johnson has a voice that cannot be compared to anyone else's. Each season that goes by, not only do we see Jude Harrison grow as an artist on the show, but we also see Alexz Johnson grow as an artist. Instant Star is the perfect television show- the acting is never cheesy, the music is always fantastic. Jude Harrison is the girl you wish you could be, living the life you wish you had. The next best thing to living it, is definitely watching it.

Instant Star

Warning: Spoilers
I've seen every episode of Instant Star and it is amazing! It's definitely worth watching. I must admit that season 1 was a little plain as it starts the main character, Jude (Alexz Johnson) off in the music business. By the time it gets to season 2, Jude is experiencing the real life of being a rockstar. The episodes are full of excitement and drama, leaving you glued to the TV for half an hour. The characters are well thought out and you can feel like you really know them and the music... the music is fantastic. I really can't wait for season 3 as there were major cliffhangers left in the season 2 finale: Date with the Night. This program has an amazing storyline and everything in it is perfect. They have definitely chosen the right actors for the job!

A Good Show for Teens
lindsayleighh6 June 2006
I've read some of the other comments about this show, where people complain about how the characters are constantly making out, or how the lead is an airhead. Clearly, these people have never seen this show. Instant Star is not about making out, or using people to make it to the top. It is about struggle. About how you have to work at stuff to make it happen.

Jude Harrison wins the Instant Star competition at age 15. She clashes with her producer, Tom Quincy, formerly Lil' Tommy Q of the hottest boy band ever. She struggles to remain true to herself, despite what her label wants. She falls in love with Tommy, has her heart broken, and gets back up. Jude Harrison is not an airhead. She is smart, and she does stay true to herself. You find yourself rooting for her to win.

Is there making out? Well, what show doesn't have it? Is it constant? No. Jude has boyfriends. Jude kisses said boyfriends. You would too. Another complaint that is lodged in my head is "you never see them at school, or doing schoolwork." That is not true at all. In season 1, Kat struggles with physics. In season 2, Jude fails a test. You see them at school. It's another thing that Jude has to deal with.

All in all, this is a good show. It is about struggle. Maybe it pushes reality a bit, but so do other shows. Jude Harrison, now 17, is a good person. This is a good show for teens to watch. In the end, what's important is what you think. As Tommy says "Don't ever ask permission to like your music", and that's applicable to everything. It can be interpreted as "Don't ask permission to like yourself", and I think that's a great lesson. Watch away, teens.

Great show!
timbergirl15513 May 2006
I first watched IS when, "You Can't Always Get What You Want" premiered. I loved the show right away, it caught me, and I haven't turned away from it since. It appeals to all ages, a very clean and awesome show to watch with friends. There's gorgeous guys, beautiful girls, music, school, witty lines, and amazing scenes.

Every Friday I planned (and still plan) my schedule around the times IS would/will be on. I love the music, Alexz Johnson (who plays Jude) is the star, she sings in real life, a very talented young lady. I remember her back on the Disney channel, she's come a long way. The remainder of the cast is great... the chemistry between everyone shines forth into the shows.

If you love teenage drama mixed in with the exciting world of music. Instant Star is the show to watch.

Instant Star is about
jpeg0020 February 2005
Jude Harrisson who defies the odds and wins a singer/writer contest. We get to know her and her family more, and the rivalry between her and her sister, and everyone else in the business or at school, etc. She struggles between doing her thing and doing something that would be a wiser career choice. Of course the big shots of the business think she's too young and want to control everything from her music to her looks. And it seems that everything in her life is happening so quickly, like her love life, her career life, everything. She goes from being a nobody to being a somebody in a blink of an eye, and it's quite overwhelming.

Instant Star is awesome!
reality_is_a_prison6 April 2008
I love Instant Star. I didn't like Alexz when she replaced Fi on So Weird because I liked Fiona and was used to her character and no "spirit animals"(like Alexz's). I know it wasn't really her fault. The actress wanted to leave the show and Alexz stepped in. I love Alexz Johnson. Alexz is a great actress. I saw commercials for this show at my friend's apartment at first and I was curious. I have loved the show since it's first episode and it has aways became better and better. I can completely relate to Jude, from people not being what they seem and trying to hurt to her to her parents not being quite who they seem. I love the music. The themes are interesting, thought provoking and identifiable. I can not wait for the 4th season. I wish it would air. SOON.

The show and BRUH THE MUSIC O H THE MUSIC ESPECIALLY (Hey Alexz Johnson she's THE "Jude Harrison" we STAN a VOCAL QUEEN! As GIRL after AWL these YEARS I STILL LOVE YOU HARD) is phenomenal! START WITH "Your Eyes", "White Lines", "Liar Liar", "Where does it hurt", "Natural Disaster", "Time to be your 21".. etc.. Please give it a chance if you haven't already. The official CHANNEL was Noggin (but "The-N" was DEFINITELY for teens after a CERTAIN time ESPECIALLY). We had "South of Nowhere", "Figure it OUT", "Whistler", "GUTS!", "A Walk in YOUR Shoes", "Legends of the HIDDEN TEMPLE", "Double Dare" AND "All That" on occasion etc etc etc.. t'was FIRE! WE was PRESSURE TUFF AWL the time. UP and UNTIL the coin ran out recently that is. 😞 Keep it UP at any rate however. This show STAYED SLAYING! FRFR!

This show is the best of all shows.
mcr_lover199610 May 2006
This show is one of the best shows I've seen in my life. All of her songs are completely wonderful. She is really talented and she should be making an album of her own that doesn't involve Instant Star. Yes the show is great but she should be actually heard of by all people instead of just some. And she is a great actress. What I can't believe is that the second season is almost over. I mean yes the first season was short, but they don't need to make every season that short. What I'm wondering is when is the third season? But what I'm really wanting to find out is if Tommy and Jude start dating. And I really hope he doesn't go back to Sadie, that girl is really annoying.

Instant Star Rocks!!
BridgeHJ416 August 2005
I love this how and unlike shows like: "That's so Raven", "The Amanda Show" or "Lizzie MaGuire" this show centers around a teenager's reality not a half hour sitcom trying hard to make us laugh and always fixing a problem in half-an-hour which is so totally unrealistic!!! Instant Star revolves around Jude Harrison her, family, friends and other important issues in her life and it ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This show is not hiding behind what people want us to think teenagers are like goody two shoes who just tap kiss in the halls not saying that, that is bad but this is a much more complicated world with much more complicated issues and I think thats why Instant Star is such a great show and can relate more to today's teens.

Watch the show I guarantee you'll love it!

The facts
monstermonkey1318 August 2009
Warning: Spoilers
There is a lot of back and forth on if this show is good or bad and if there is no strong roll model and too much sex. Well the show starts out with a spunky 15 year old girl who wins a contest for a song she wrote and performed on a TV show. A little unbelievable, yes, but it's what the show is about. She very quickly is thrown into the whole fame bit; concerts, fans, manager/producer, etc. In the first few seasons, Jude, the main character, is faced with normal every day challenges as well as not so normal challenges. But the point is, that through it all, she sticks to her beliefs in the end. She does not have sex of any kind until the 4th and final season, so all the talk about too much sex is wrong. Yes there may be a bit of kissing, but it's not too bad till about season 2. Not that it ever gets really bad at all. I'd say that 95% of the kissing on this show is a major point in the show that is justified by the story line, it's not just another make out scene to wrangle the teenagers into watching it. I personally do believe the character is a fairly good role model for young ladies. She abstains from sex until she is absolutely sure she is ready and old enough, and follows her heart instead of letting a relationship hold her back from what she really wants to do. Yes, at times the main character, as well as some others, can be rather selfish, but can you say there was never a time that you weren't as well? All in all, if I had a teenage girl, I'd let her watch the show with no worries as to what she might pick up from it. I do enjoy degrassi too, but that show would show off more sex in it. Most of the characters lose their virginity well before their 18th bday, heck some of them get pregnant and have abortions before they are even old enough to understand real responsibility. So in comparison, is Instant star really that bad?

4 out of 5 stars...
ilewis-112 August 2005
This is not your run of the mill shallow show. If you're expecting Lizzie McGuire, teeny- bopper fluff, this is not the show for you. Think more along the lines of Degrassi. It's grittier and has more depth and emotion to it. While the overall storyline is a hard one to connect with because it's so out there, it's definitely a perspective that hasn't really been shown on television about the downsides of fame. Maybe things during the course of the show come a little to easy to her, but what TV is truly and completely real to life. I would give Instant Star 4 our of 5 stars for a show aimed at pre-teens and teens. Plus I really love the music. And if you think you've seen Jude somewhere else, you may remember her from So Weird, another show that was heavy with music. So you know this girl is truly talented.

Instant Star--a perfect ten
Songgurl4u12 August 2005
I found Instant Star's main character, Jude, to be positively likable. She's just like every other teenage girl (and I would know, as I am one), only she's dealing with sudden fame. Yet Jude, somehow, manages to stay down to earth and that, to me, makes her all the more endearing. The other characters are wonderful, as well. All are fun to watch; all add to the story and tie it together neatly. From the beginning, I knew I was hooked. Jude's guy problems are just like every other girl's, and same goes for her home life. It was nice to see that portrayed on television. I, for one, think that Instant Star is a perfect ten.

Instant Star *A-
summergirl436714 August 2005
Instant Star is a great TV show for teenagers. The lead actors/actresses Alexz Johnson and Tim Rozon are great at portraying their characters, making you feel what they feel. This TV show is about 16 year old Jude (Alexz) who won a talent contest and is sky-rocketed into fame. Her producer Tommy Q (Tim) is 21 and has feelings toward Jude which he ignores knowing her age. Jude also likes Tommy but despite her attempts, he reminds her she's too young.

Another dilemma is that Jude tries hard to stay original, with original music, but finds it difficult as the music industry is trying to turn her into a more mainstream artist. Also, she has trouble with jealousy because people at her school and even her friends become sick of the constant hype about her.

This show deals with fame, teen crushes/relationships, friendships, and other emotions. Really wonderful show for ages 12-17 Rating: A- Definitely a must see.

More Instant Stars

Warning: Spoilers
I'm really sad that there is no more Instant star. The show has inspired me to be a better person I wish there was more of it. I watch the 4 seasons in two days. First 2 on day the last to the next I'm so hooked on the show I really want to know what happens to everyone Does Jude and Tommy get together Did Tommy go after her Did Jimmy company go big what new songs did Jude come up with does she meet someone in London Does Jude turn back to get Tommy Do the people like Jude's bacement song. I really think it would be smart to get the cast back and move more seasons. I think the show can impair teenagers young adults shoot impair anyone to chance their dreams and believe in themselves.
