Blake Lively in Official Trailer for Marc Forster's Drama 'All I See Is You'

18 September 2017 2:23 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"Well, we don't really know what me is, do we?" Open Road Films has unveiled an official trailer for All I See Is You, the latest from director Marc Forster (of Stranger Than Fiction, The Kite Runner, Quantum of Solace, World War Z). Blake Lively stars as a woman who was blinded in a near-fatal car accident when she was young. She now lives in Thailand, happily married to her husband, played by Jason Clarke. When she receives implants and can see again, their lives and relationship are upended by the truths that come to light. The cast includes Yvonne Strahovski, Danny Huston, Ahna O'Reilly, and Wes Chatham. This seems like an odd relationship drama that has been quietly sitting on the shelf all year. It almost seems like there's some twist in this where it turns out he's a serial killer, or something, I can't really tell. Take a look. »

Why Nonprofits Should Stop Supporting Film Production — Opinion

6 July 2017 9:41 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

This editorial was originally published by Sub-Genre Media, the consulting company run by film producer Brian Newman, and is reproduced here with permission of the author.

I’m being hyperbolic here, but bear with me. Back in the ’70s, many nonprofits started to spring up to help filmmakers (and other artists). For film, the idea was simple – buying a film camera and equipment and then a Steenbeck to edit a film with was super-expensive. Band together, apply for grants and voila – you’ve got access to equipment.

This is how Image Film & Video of Atlanta, Ga came together, an organization I used to run, and which still exists in a different form as the Atlanta Film Festival. In fact, that’s how many (but not all) film festivals came together – those same filmmakers thought, “Gee, now that I’ve made my indie film, where the heck can I show it? »

HBO Documentary Co-Director Commits Suicide Amid Murder Investigation

20 June 2017 7:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Omar Broadway, the co-director and subject of the 2008 HBO documentary “An Omar Broadway Film,” killed himself earlier this month as police were attempting to arrest him for the murder of his 18-year-old nephew. The 35-year-old Broadway shot himself in the basement of an Essex County, New Jersey residence as authorities surrounded the house. Police are still looking for Kenneth Durant, 36, another subject in the May 4 murder of Najee Broadway.

Omar Broadway made the transition from incarcerated gang member to filmmaker after arranging for a camera to be smuggled into a state prison and surreptitiously shooting footage for roughly six months, capturing everything from the boredom of life behind bars to corruption among the prison guards, some of whom would use excessive force and physically abuse inmates. Broadway had hoped that getting the tapes out of prison and »

Movie Review – Colossal (2016)

16 May 2017 2:30 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Colossal, 2016.

Directed by Nacho Vigalondo.

Starring: Anne Hathaway, Jason Sudeikis, Dan Stevens, Austin Stowell, and Tim Blake Nelson.

Synopsis:

A young woman discovers that when she walks through a certain park in her hometown a monster appears in downtown Seoul mimicking her every movement.

When a high-concept comedy delivers on its premise, it can be a truly wonderful thing. Successful examples that spring to mind include Groundhog Day, Bruce Almighty, Stranger Than Fiction, and I would even argue Snakes on a Plane! Colossal has an undeniably original premise (it’s essentially Godzilla meets Being John Malkovich), but despite the best efforts of the cast it’s a sadly unfocused and unsatisfying effort.

Having been unemployed for a year, Anne Hathaway’s character Gloria has been getting drunk more and more often as a way of coping. One day her boozy antics and increasing unreliability become too much for her very »

Watch David Spade Be Serious in “Warning Shot” Trailer with James Earl Jones

I’ve always been a huge fan of when actors and comedians known for only playing funny parts take on serious roles.   There’s just something fascinating about these guys trying something that’s completely foreign.  And for the most part, I’ve enjoyed seeing funny guys be serious.  Adam Sandler was great in Punch Drunk Love and Funny People.   Steve Martin was awesome in ShopgirlRobin Williams was amazing in every single serious role he ever played.  Jim Carrey in The Truman Show.   Even Will Ferrell killed it in Stranger Than Fiction.  The list goes on and on.   The latest comedian taking

Stranger Than Fiction: The Truthiness of ‘Fargo’

20 April 2017 2:51 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

“You don’t have to have a true story to make a true story movie.”

Noah Hawley’s acclaimed midwestern crime anthology Fargo returns to FX this week, along with my enthusiasm for saying oh yah and you betcha to anyone with the gall to speak to me when I would rather be watching Fargo. In my defence there are not one, but two, gloriously bad Ewan McGregor wigs. Truly, Hawley is doing the Lord’s work. Season three is set in the not too distant past of 2010, and follows the tried-and-true template of a ridiculously stacked ensemble of endearing (and woefully misguided) ne’er do wells gradually bungling their way into a shit show of their own design. As with each of the previous installments, least of all the Coen Brothers’ original 1996 film, the opening of this week’s episode features the following superimposed text:

This is a true story. The »

Was Chuck Barris a CIA Assassin? "There's a Possibility," 'Dangerous Mind' Producer Says

24 March 2017 7:44 AM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Two decades ago, producer Andrew Lazar acquired the rights to Chuck Barris' memoir Confessions of a Dangerous Mind: An Unauthorized Biography. Stranger than fiction, the 1984 book detailed The Gong Show host's hidden life as a CIA assassin in the 1960s and '70s. Lazar enlisted Charlie Kaufman to adapt the wild story, which would mark George Clooney's directing debut. The resulting 2002 movie, which depicts star Sam Rockwell killing 33 people, has been largely viewed as fantastical fiction.

But Lazar, who remained a close friend of Barris' and visited him just six weeks before his death on March 21, says »

Need to find a bit of movie happiness? Here are 25 films that might just do the trick...

Let's face it, we could all probably do with a little bit of cheering up right about now. Times are scary and times are tough, so it's perfectly natural to look for some kind of reassurance that everything will indeed be all right in the end.

Film is perhaps one of the most powerful and effective tools in doing this. It can be a transportative experience, an escape from reality, and, most importantly, it can act as a reminder of all that is good in the world.

With that in mind, here’s a list of 25 movies that are almost-guaranteed to make you smile and restore your faith in humanity...

Aidc 2017: It’s time to think big, and think business, says Graeme Mason

7 March 2017 4:23 PM, PST | IF.com.au | See recent IF.com.au news »

Graeme Mason..

The message of Screen Australia CEO Graeme Mason.s keynote address to the Australian International Documentary Conference (Aidc) was simple: adapt or die..

Despite significant budget cuts, Mason said Screen Australia had tried its best so far to insulate on-screen funding by trimming costs and staff..

However this financial year will see the agency.s direct on-screen funding drop around 6 per cent across the board. Mason said Screen Australia will, as a result, have to start saying no to projects it perhaps would have backed in the past. In response, filmmakers need to consider what that means for their businesses..

.If your funding model for your project, or worse, your entire business, relies majorly on federal and state funding, then you are not coming from a position of strength, or in most cases, logic,. he said..

.We do know that times are tricky elsewhere here in Australia. The »

‘Tickled’ Revisited: Filmmaker David Farrier Says ‘I Don’t Know How Long This Crazy Sh*t Is Going to Keep Happening’

24 February 2017 8:30 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

The strange saga of David Farrier and Dylan Reeve’s fascinating and controversial documentary “Tickled” didn’t end once the filmmakers stopped filming in 2015. When Farrier, a well-known New Zealand entertainment journalist, first started researching the world of “competitive endurance tickling” for a piece, he soon discovered a bizarre entertainment underworld populated by both true tickling enthusiasts and shady dealers who weren’t eager to have their activities at the center of a buzzy documentary.

Tickled,” which premiered at Sundance in 2016, is as much about Farrier and Reeve attempting to understand the “sport” of tickling as it is about the filmmakers being threatened, harassed and bullied by various representatives of Jane O’Brien Media, who host competitive tickling events and then record them for internet dispersal. Even when production ended, the Jane O’Brien reps persisted, popping at “Tickled” screenings at Sundance, True/False and other public venues.
