Storyline

Something has gone wrong at a remote scientific research station on Mars. All research has ceased. Communication has failed. And the messages that do get through are less than comforting. It's a level 5 quarantine and the only souls allowed in or out are the Rapid Response Tactical Squad - hardened Marines armed to the teeth with enough firepower to neutralize the enemy...or so they think. Trivia

Originally, it was announced in 1999 that the film would be made and that Arnold Schwarzenegger was cast in the lead role of Doomguy, the protagonist of the video game. Unfortunately, a real life incident involving two teenagers who had played the video game, playing about with a chainsaw, resulted in a tragic accident. Since one of Doomguy's weapons in the video game is a chainsaw, the film with Schwarzenegger in the lead role was dropped at that time. The film was finally brought to the big screen in 2005. Killer movie that heads straight for the action
10 December 2005 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

I swear some times people these days are complete nitwits with the most absurd expectations that are in fact incredibly low and very "childlike". I heard over and over again just how BAD this movie was and I'm glad I didn't let that give me tainted expectations going in. It's like they expect some huge scenes of soap opera drama for movies that should be carried by the action and characters who's dynamics are established as the story carries out, not the first 20-30 minutes of the movie and THEN all hell breaks loose. Action movies like that are bland and put me to sleep. The dialog is almost always incredibly boring but the kids seem to want their "celebs" to have excessive camera time delivering boring and foolish lines with bad ass attitude. "Hey we came to listen to and watch are favorite actor, not get wrapped up in a movie!". I mean come on, that's little kid sh*t. People seem more interested in the "celeb" than they do a quality movie. I guess in this case it was a game more than a celebrity but likely some of both.

Sure, Dwayne's character could have used a little bit more character development in the first 10-15 minutes of the film so his harshness wouldn't have been so abrupt when he seemed to pull a 180 but other than that minor fault, I don't think it was a weak script at all.

So what the hell were you kids expecting? EVERY monster from the game to be incorporated? Were you expecting a storyline that followed a game with an over the top script in comparison to the game's story line? I think too many people wanted a drawn out plot with all sorts of drama and resolutions as the story unfolded. It's a movie based on a game where you kill everything with bad ass weapons. I mean wake up.

I think that is the case here. People play these video games and don't have the insight to understand that bringing these games to the big screen based solely on the games story lines is a tragedy waiting to happen. Resident Evil 1 was forking AWESOME. Many kids hated it. Resident Evil 2 was WEAK and far too much cheese. The kids loved it!

Seriously, the more over the top and childish the effects and characters "abilities" are, the more this generation eats this crap up. I hear some REALLY bad lines in movies and the kids will eat them up like they are oh so empowering and moving. I personally find it to be a tragedy that people's tastes are so underdeveloped, clouded with unrealistic expectations and are just all around unsophisticated. I also assumed this movie was setting up for a more involved plot and story line if a sequel is to be made which I think should happen. It wasn't the tightest script out there but it was still damn good.

I think gamers in general go into these video game movies with unrealistic expectations and that sets them up for disappointment. This movie didn't seem like the Doom games EXACTLY but it had their "feel". I think they did a great job adapting it to the big screen in a way that it wasn't overshadowed by the game but still captured many of it's elements. Some will disagree but I think the industry has been gearing the publics interest to actually have low expectations and they aren't yet sharp enough to realize it. This movie ROCKED!
