a particularly inspired short from a not particularly inspired film.

This is a short DVD extra that was included with the Hammer film "Blood From the Mummy's Tomb". While the original film is definitely one of Hammer's lesser (i.e., bad) horror films, the DVD extras were very good compared to the average Hammer film. "The Curse of..." stars Valerie Leon (who still looks marvelous after three decades) and one of the writers.

Supposedly, there was some sort of jinx associated with this film. First, Peter Cushing left the film early on (forcing his character to be played by someone else) when his wife died. Then, the film's relatively young director (aged 47) died and another guy needed to finish the film. . However, Cushing's wife HAD been very ill AND the director, at least according to the film, was an alcoholic--so neither death was really that extraordinary. This was certainly NOT a case of King Tut's supposed curse! Other than these two perfectly understandable deaths, there really wasn't anything unusual about the production and the "fated film" angle seems ridiculous, really.

All in all, not a particularly inspired short from a not particularly inspired film.

Interesting

VERY short (9 minutes) documentary about the troubled shooting of "Blood from the Mummy's Tomb" (1972). They show interviews with star Valerie Leon and the head writer (presumably the ONLY two people left alive from the shoot). Peter Cushing was supposed to play Leon's father but, after one day of shooting, his wife died so he had to be replace quickly. The head writer was fired and rewrites went flying. Also director Seth Holt died unexpectedly in his sleep with ONE WEEK of filming left! It had people joking (I think) about a curse being on the film. This docu goes over that and gives a small insight into the making of the movie. It is interesting but much too short. Longer interviews might have helped. Worth seeing. It's on the Anchor Bay DVD of "Blood..." as an extra.
