LONDON -- BBC head of comedy commissioning Mark Freeland is leaving the U.K. pubcaster to join indie movie and television production banner Hartswood Films, where he will become a senior executive at the family-run company with responsibility to bring in and produce television and movie projects. His new role, which was announced Tuesday, could see Freeland pitching projects from Hartswood to the BBC. In his three-year tenure at the BBC, Freeland commissioned several indie comedy productions for the BBC, including The Keith Barret Show, Nighty Night, The Mighty Boosh, Shirley Ghostman and Hartswood's upcoming Australian co-production Supernova. Hartswood CEO Beryl Vertue described Freeland as having "real editorial flair" for comedy. »
