Amy Adams Saves Strained Familial Dramedy, 31 January 2006
6/10
Author: David H. Schleicher from New Jersey, USA

A Chicago art dealer (a likable Embeth Davitz) travels to North Carolina to woo an eccentric painter and decides to take a detour with her young husband (a nondescript Alessandro Nivolo) to visit his quirky in-laws. Having lived in the North Carolina Piedmont area for over five years, I definitely "got" a lot of the subtle humor director Phil Morrison puts on display here. As far as setting a mood and place through pacing and characters as stereotypes, the filmmakers were spot on with their portrayal of small-town North Carolina. Unfortunately they didn't spend as much time on character development and pretty much take the viewer nowhere. This is yet another film billed as a "quirky comedy" that is in fact a pretty serious and at times downright sappy drama about family and coming home. An absolutely delightful Amy Adams as the motor-mouthed and very pregnant sister-in-law to Nivolo's character single-handedly keeps the film afloat and is equally strong in both the comedic and dramatic parts.
