The director of Spectre and American Beauty will preside over the jury of the 73rd Venice Film Festival.

Sam Mendes is to head a nine-strong competition jury at the Venice Film Festival (Aug 31-Sept 10), it has been announced.

The British filmmaker took his second feature, Road To Perdition, to the Lido in 2002 where it competed for the coveted Golden Lion.

“I’m very honoured to have been asked by Alberto to lead the International Jury for Venezia 73,” said Mendes of the festival’s artistic director, Alberto Barbera.

“I’ve always had a strong personal connection with Venice; as a student I worked for three months at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection way back in 1984, and my happiest film festival memory is launching Road To Perdition at Venice in 2002.

“I am thoroughly delighted to be coming back to the Lido this year and welcoming a wealth of international filmmaking talent.”

Sam Mendes to Head Venice Film Festival Jury

27 April 2016 8:06 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Rome — British film and stage director Sam Mendes will head the jury of the 73rd Venice Film Festival.

Mendes’ rapport with the Lido dates back to 2002 when he was in the Venice competition with Tom Hanks-starrer “Road to Perdition,” which is the only one of his movies to launch from an international film festival.

Mendes broke out on the global film scene with his smash hit first feature “American Beauty,” followed by mob movie “Perdition,” war drama “Jarhead,” Kate Winslet-starrer “Revolutionary Road,” road comedy “Away We Go” and the two highly successful latest James Bond pictures, “Skyfall,” in 2012, and “Spectre” in 2015.

He will next direct “The Voyeur’s Motel,” based on a soon-to-be-published novel by Gay Talese about a man who spent 35 years spying on his motel guests. Steven Spielberg is producing.

It’s the burden on everyone else to lament that Roger Deakins has yet to score an Oscar from his 13 nominations. Speaking with the famed cinematographer himself, it’s clear he’s honed in on the process and the process only; this year’s nomination is for Denis Villeneuve’s “Sicario,” yet he’s already lensed the Coen Brothers’ “Hail, Caesar!” and started prep on “Blade Runner 2” (again with Villeneuve). He’s also uniquely generous in sharing that process, as one of the few DPs to moderate an online forum with discussions and advice on lighting, gear, and narrative techniques. From his early career in documentaries to shooting diverse, high-profile projects like “Skyfall,” “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” and “A Serious Man,” Deakins has fostered a number of creative partnerships while embracing the numerous shifts in technology. A collaborator of the Coens since “Barton Fink, »
