Originally, the idea for the series of 'Magtens billeder' came into being in 1997 when Folketinget (Danish Parliament) set up a research project entitled 'Den Danske Magtudredning' (the Account of Power in Denmark). In spring 2003 Danmarks Radio and Det danske Filminstitut announced an open competition, and received 111 proposals for documentaries. 12 of these were selected for the series.

'Magtens billeder' was originally conceived in 2003 as a series of 12 documentaries. But the documentary entitled 'Svineriget' (written and directed by Ebbe Nyvold and Christian Schou) was not produced accordingly to Danmarks Radio's ethical programme standards, and would therefore not officially be part of the series, nor broadcasted by Danmarks Radio. 'Svineriget' was eventually released in 2005 on DVD by The Danish Film Institute (together with the other 11 documentaries).
