David Ayer thanks fans as Suicide Squad hits $600 million worldwide

26 August 2016 2:50 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Despite being mauled by critics, Warner Bros.Suicide Squad has proven to be a solid hit at the box office, with director David Ayer taking to Twitter to thank the fans for helping the movie hit the $600 million mark worldwide…

@SuicideSquadWB 600 million worldwide! Thank you to everyone for making this a success! @WarnerBrosEnt

David Ayer (@DavidAyerMovies) August 26, 2016

Ayer may have jumped the gun slightly, as Box Office Mojo only has the film grossing $582 million by close of play on Wednesday. Nevertheless, it looks likely that the DC supervillain team-up will cross $600 million globally this weekend, although it is expected to fall from top spot at the U.S. box office after three weeks at number one.

Suicide Squad tops domestic box office for third consecutive weekend

21 August 2016 12:07 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Suicide Squad has continued its impressive run at the North American box office, topping the chart for the third consecutive weekend – a feat that neither Man of Steel nor Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice managed to accomplish.

Suicide Squad is expected to pull in around $20.7 million domestically over the Friday-Sunday period, having brushed aside competition from Ben-Hur, which tanked in its opening weekend.

The DC supervillain ensemble has earned $262.2 million in the States, and its worldwide haul now sits at $572.6 million. That puts it ahead of 20th Century Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse, which earned $542.7 million earlier this year, and it has one major market left to open in, Japan, where it debuts on September 10th.

Suicide Squad crosses the half billion mark at the global box office

18 August 2016 3:27 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It may not have impressed critics, but Warner Bros.Suicide Squad is certainly proving to be a big hit with audiences; the film smashed the August domestic opening record, and has now surpassed the half billion dollar mark at the box office, with the DC supervillain team-up hitting $509 million around the globe in just 13 days.

“It is incredibly rewarding to see audiences around the world coming out in such a big way for Suicide Squad,” states Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, president of worldwide distribution. “We have several major markets yet to open, and expect to continue seeing strong returns at the box office for the weeks to come.”

“We’re thrilled with the huge numbers on Suicide Squad, and to be coming out of an already highly successful summer with such a big win for our slate,” adds Sue Kroll, president of worldwide marketing and distribution. “The film is in position »

Suicide Squad suffers big drop but fends off Sausage Party to stay top of the box office

14 August 2016 12:49 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

After smashing the August box office opening record last weekend, Warner Bros.Suicide Squad managed to fend off competition from the adult animated comedy Sausage Party to hold on to top spot domestically, but much like the previous instalment of the DC Extended Universe, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it suffered a rather steep drop.

The David Ayer-directed supervillain team-up grossed $47.7 million – down 67.3% from last weekend – while Sausage Party followed in second place with $33.6 million. Suicide Squad is now up to $222.8 million on home soil, and has grossed a solid $465.3 million worldwide so far after just twelve days.

Will Suicide Squad have enough legs to reach the reported $750 – $800 million mark that it is said to require to turn a profit for Warner Bros.? Or will the lack of a release in China cost it? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

Jared Leto says The Joker and Superman would be interesting to see on screen together

13 August 2016 1:00 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Following the release of Suicide Squad, Jared Leto took a moment out from complaining about how many of his scenes ended up on the cutting room floor to say that he’d like to see his Joker going up against Ben Affleck’s Dark Knight in the Batman solo movie, and now he’s told IGN that it would be interesting to see the Clown Prince of Crime sharing the screen with the Man of Steel.

Superman seems like a lot of fun though for the Joker,” said Leto. “The Joker and Superman would be interesting to see on screen because Superman’s so stoic and morally-centred. I think that the Joker would really enjoy that. Superman is just the classic hero, and The Joker opposite any classic hero would be really interesting.”

The Scooperhero News is back! Unfortunately, though, Oli and Luke bring bad news: the movie that was meant to save the DC Expanded Universe, Suicide Squad, is falling apart.

With reports that there were two separate cuts of the movie – one from director David Ayer and the other from the studio – Jared Leto unhappy with how many of his Joker scenes are cut and more, 2016 really hasn’t been Warner Bros. year…

Suicide Squad crosses $300 million worldwide

12 August 2016 2:14 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Despite getting a bit of drumming by the critics (our own Oli Davis went nuts about on the Flickering Myth Podcast), Suicide Squad is pulling in money around the world.

After a record breaking opening weekend, Suicide Squad has retained a lot of its audience and has now crossed $300 million worldwide. Its still a way off from the $750-$800 million it needs (and will struggle to get there without a Chinese release), but its a promising sign ahead of its second weekend.

Suicide Squad director David Ayer explains The Joker’s grill and ‘Damaged’ tattoo

10 August 2016 11:25 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

During an interview with Empire, Suicide Squad director David Ayer has addressed one of the most controversial aspects of the DC supervillain team-up – The Joker’s tattoos and grill – explaining how they came about.

“This is sort of my personal thing and maybe less about a larger connection,” said Ayer. “But Joker killed Robin and Batman basically smashes his teeth out and locks him up in Arkham Asylum. It’s in the asylum where Joker would have done the ‘damaged’ tattoo as a message to Batman saying, ‘You’ve damaged me. I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.’ That’s where the grill comes from.”

Jared Leto says there are enough deleted scenes from Suicide Squad for a Joker movie

9 August 2016 2:29 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Jared Leto seems to have spent the majority of the press tour for Suicide Squad bemoaning the amount of his scenes as the Joker which ended up on the cutting room floor, and he’s been at it again during an interview with the BBC, stating that there’s enough for an entire Joker movie.

“I think that I brought so much to the table in every scene, it was probably more about filtering all of the insanity. Because I wanted to give a lot of options, and I think there’s probably enough footage in this film for a Joker movie… If I were to die tomorrow, maybe the studio would roll something out. Rated R or rated X performance in there somewhere.”

With Suicide Squad being critically panned, could Warner Bros. insist on further reshoots to both Wonder Woman and Justice League? Oli and Luke argue that the Dceu won’t be able to shake the studio’s interference until the newly created production house DC Films, headed by comic book mastermind Geoff Johns, is fully out of Warner Bros’ grasp.

Rumoured list of deleted scenes from Suicide Squad

7 August 2016 12:02 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

In the lead up to the release of Suicide Squad this past week, details emerged about two competing cuts of the movie, while Jared Leto revealed that many of his scenes as The Joker ended up on the cutting room floor.

Unlike Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which received an extended version for its home entertainment release, director David Ayer has stated that the theatrical version of Suicide Squad is the cut of the movie, and so it’s likely we’ll have to hope that many of the deleted scenes end up as a bonus feature on the Blu-ray and DVD release.

However, we may now have some idea of what was removed from the film, with a user on Reddit posting an alleged list of all the deleted scenes:

“In early cuts, the movie’s opening detailed June Moon’s possession by Enchantress in real time. Reshoots »

Suicide Squad pulls in a global opening weekend of $267 million

The latest chapter of the DC Extended Universe, Suicide Squad, has brushed aside the bad reviews to score a $267 million opening haul worldwide.

Domestically, the David Ayer-directed supervillain ensemble grossed $135.1 million, shattering the previous August opening weekend record of $94.3 million set by Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy back in 2014.

Jared Leto wanted Suicide Squad to be Rated R

7 August 2016 3:28 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

When Suicide Squad went into production, the superhero genre was in a pre-Deadpool age. A rated R movie (the equivalent of a 15 certificate in the UK) hadn’t been part of the successful box office equation for over a decade. The last rated R tentpole blockbuster to make a tonne of money was The Matrix Reloaded back in 2003. Warner Bros. erred on the side of caution and – despite the film’s edgy subject matter and characters – crafted a PG-13 movie.

In an interview with Edith Bowman, who was filling in on Kermode and Mayo’s Film Review, one of Suicide Squad’s top-billed stars revealed how he was against the four-quadrant pleasing rating from the start: Jared Leto wanted the film to be rated R (listen to the full interview below the quote).

“I brought so much to the table in every scene,” Leto explained about his ‘method’ approach to the role. »

Suicide Squad enjoys record-breaking Thursday opening at the box office

5 August 2016 1:05 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It may have been a bit of a bust with critics, but fans have certainly turned out in force for Suicide Squad, with the film earning $20.5 million from Thursday night previews in North America, almost doubling the previous August record of $11.2 million set by Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy back in 2014.

Suicide Squad looks odds on to surpass Guardians of the Galaxy’s August opening weekend record of , with tracking suggesting that the David Ayer-directed supervillain blockbuster could go as high as $140 million domestically.

The film also opened in a number of international markets on Thursday, amassing $29.6 million. At this rate, a global weekend of around $300 million is certainly within the realm of possibility.

Zack Snyder directed a certain scene in Suicide Squad

5 August 2016 11:39 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Warning: Minor Suicide Squad spoilers follow. You have been warned…

As well as serving as executive producer on Suicide Squad, it seems that Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice helmer Zack Snyder also directed one key scene from the DC supervillain blockbuster.

Speaking to Collider, David Ayer has revealed that Snyder was responsible for shooting Ezra Miller’s cameo as The Flash, with the Scarlet Speedster popping up to foil a bank robbery by Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang. The scene in question was filmed on the set of Justice League, while Suicide Squad was deep in post-production.

“Flash was always in the movie, we just got lucky because Justice League was happening and they had the uniform, they had the assets, so we were able to get that photography,” said Ayer.

Expect Snyder to announce an extended, fifteen-minute cut of the shot to coincide with the film’s Blu-ray release. »

Jared Leto says a lot of his Joker scenes were cut from Suicide Squad

5 August 2016 9:52 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

Going by the way he was prominently featured in the marketing campaign, you’d be forgiven for expecting Jared Leto’s Joker to be one of the main players in Warner Bros.’ latest DC Films release, Suicide Squad.

However, as it turns out, the Clown Prince of Crime is firmly a supporting player in the ensemble, and according to Leto himself, much of his material was left on the cutting room floor.

“There are a lot of scenes that didn’t make it to the final film,” Leto told Telestar (via SlashFilm). “Hopefully they will see the light of day. Who knows.”

China release looking unlikely for Suicide Squad

5 August 2016 4:15 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

With Suicide Squad reportedly needing to make a whopping $750 – $800 million in order to break even for Warner Bros., it looks like it will have to try and so so without the world’s second-biggest movie market, as THR is reporting that the DC supervillain team-up is unlikely to receive approval for a release in China.

As yet, the film is yet to receive a release date from China Film Group, the state-backed distributor responsible for handling the import of all foreign films, with a source stating that: “They think this is not a good film to release in China.”

Warner Bros. had been hopeful that a PG-13 rating and a change of title to Special Task Force X might be enough to convince the censors to allow the film a release, but it now seems “increasingly unlikely”.
