Oscars: Clint Eastwood, Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott Race to the Finish

18 August 2017 12:04 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

It wouldn’t be awards season without a little bit of drama around last-minute contenders sprinting to the finish line. This year, there are three major prestige projects based on true events from powerhouse directors that could really shake up the race.

Steven Spielberg’s “The Papers” — about the Washington Post, the Pentagon Papers, and a watershed moment in the history of press freedom — wasn’t even a go until a week after “Moonlight” won the best picture Oscar earlier this year. The Fox production shot throughout the summer and wrapped in July, aiming for a Dec. 22 limited release. It’s packed with an all-star cast, including Meryl Streep (as Post publisher Katharine Graham), Tom Hanks (as editor Ben Bradlee, a role that won Jason Robards an Oscar in 1977 for “All the President’s Men”), and Carrie Coon (as Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Meg Greenfield), among many others.

Meanwhile, Ridley Scott’s “All the Money in the World »

1 June 2017 1:58 PM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Many of Hollywood’s finest talents in front of and behind the camera have spent time in the military, and it’s definitely influenced their art. From Oliver Stone’s tour of Vietnam informing and inspiring his classic “Platoon,” to “Wonder Woman” star Gal Gadot citing her Israel Defense Forces service as the first step to a winning audition for the “Fast and the Furious” franchise, the drive and discipline many of these soldiers gained has been evident through their work.

When gathering some of our favorites, it felt natural seeing that politically-minded filmmakers like Clint Eastwood spent some time in the military (after all, he’s made several movies about combat, including “Flags of Our Fathers” and “American Sniper”). TCM goes to war on Memorial Day: But thorny issues mostly avoided

29 May 2017 9:26 PM, PDT | Alt Film Guide | See recent Alt Film Guide news »

Submarine movie evening: Underwater war waged in TCM's Memorial Day films In the U.S., Turner Classic Movies has gone all red, white, and blue this 2017 Memorial Day weekend, presenting a few dozen Hollywood movies set during some of the numerous wars in which the U.S. has been involved around the globe during the last century or so. On Memorial Day proper, TCM is offering a submarine movie evening. More on that further below. But first it's good to remember that although war has, to put it mildly, serious consequences for all involved, it can be particularly brutal on civilians – whether male or female; young or old; saintly or devilish; no matter the nationality, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or any other label used in order to, figuratively or literally, split apart human beings. Just this past Sunday, the Pentagon chief announced that civilian deaths should be anticipated as “a »

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk review

13 February 2017 8:58 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Ang Lee's latest film is an unconventional film being distributed, on the whole, in a very conventional way...

In the race to set forth the future of cinema through various technological advances, Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk feels like a major casualty. Once tipped for the Oscar race, the latest film from Ang Lee has bombed at the worldwide box office and been all but ignored by critics and awards bodies. This is partly due to complications in exhibiting the film in its intended format, because cinemas haven't adapted for this war drama as they did for major blockbusters of recent years.

Avatar successfully made the case for 3D, like the gift of fire from James Cameron to studio arsonists who post-converted every tentpole movie in sight, while Peter Jackson's Hobbit films were less successful in pioneering higher frame rates, inadvertently exposing the actors' make-up and making the audience dizzy. »
