Harry Potter, and the trouble with 3D

Simon Brew Jan 17, 2018

Warner Bros, the Harry Potter films, and the assorted struggles with 3D...

This year marks the tenth anniversary of Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince, a movie I caught up with again over the weekend. The sixth in the boxset of eight, I’d not seen it since its release, and I’ve gradually been rewatching the Potter films on the Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray format. So far, Half-Blood Prince is the one that benefits the most from the 4K upgrade. The sombre palette particularly takes advantage of the extra resolution afforded.

The film, though, was also the second in the series to be released partially in 3D, after the ending of Harry Potter & The Order Of The Phoenix had enjoyed/suffered a post-production overhaul of its finale with certain screenings. With Avatar still just around the corner, Warner Bros was experimenting with 3D more than fully

‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Nears $1 Billion at Worldwide Box Office
Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is inching closer to the $1 billion milestone, with worldwide grosses set to hit the mark before New Year’s Eve.

Disney-Lucasfilm’s “The Last Jedi” earned $934.2 million worldwide after pulling in $42.1 million globally on Thursday to reach $464.6 million domestically in two weeks along with $469.6 internationally.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi” took in $19.4 million at 4,232 sites Thursday to top Sony’s “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” which has been “The Last Jedi’s” biggest competitor since it opened on Dec. 20. The action-comedy took in $15 million on Thursday from 3,765 North American locations, bringing the nine-day domestic total to $119.3 million.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” is also performing impressively

HBO Teases Harry Potter: The Entire Adventure With New Trailer

Take heed, Potterheads: For the very first time, all eight Harry Potter films will be available to stream on the same platform (HBO), starting in January.

That’s right, the house of Westworld and Game of Thrones is kicking off the new year with the definitive Potter movie marathon, spanning Sorcerer’s Stone to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

It all begins with the former on January 2nd, with a new instalment set to air each day at 8 pm Et/Pt right up until the advent of Fantastic Beasts on Wednesday, January 10th, which is rather fitting given how 2018 will also herald David Yates’ magical sequel – one which primarily takes place in the city of Paris, from what we understand.

All nine movies will also be available to stream instantaneously via HBO On Demand, HBO Now and HBO Go, so there’s perhaps no better time to sign

‘Darkest Hour’ Review: Gary Oldman Gives Us a Fearsome, Oscar-Worthy Churchill

‘Darkest Hour’ Review: Gary Oldman Gives Us a Fearsome, Oscar-Worthy Churchill
Gary Oldman is one of the greatest actors on the planet – and he proves it again as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, director Joe Wright's rip-roaring take on the celebrated Prime Minister's first tumultuous month in office in May, 1940, when France and Belgium are a whisper away from surrendering to Hitler and Great Britain may be next. (How I'd love to see Oldman's take on the Fuhrer).

The British actor, 59, has played real people before, from Sid Vicious (Sid and Nancy) to Lee Harvey Oswald (JFK). But his Churchill is something different.

Top Ten Movie Franchises Based on Books

  • Cinelinx
For as long as there have been movies, there have been movies based on books. This is a look at the best movie franchises that are either based on a book or several books.

It’s one thing to have a movie that is based on a book. It happens all the time. It’s more rare to have an entire franchise of films based on a book or set of books. Over the last two decades, it seems like we have been seeing more and more franchises emerge that are based on books. This seems to be happening for a few reasons. First, Hollywood is more than ever looking for established properties on which to base films. Book, have been and always will be one of the best established properties for a movie to be based upon. Second, if the books have a big following, chances are that the

No, You're Not Losing It: Dickon Tarly Definitely Has a New Face on Game of Thrones

When we first meet Dickon Tarly, Samwell's pompous brother on Game of Thrones, he's at a very awkward Tarly family dinner in season six. He openly mocks his brother about his claims of killing a White Walker and is generally a big assh*le (no wonder Sam has all those self-esteem issues). He's played by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince actor Freddie Stroma in the episode (pictured above), who confirmed not long after it aired that he would not be returning to the series in season seven due to scheduling conflicts with his now-canceled show, Time After Time. Although we were sad to see Stroma go, the actor was soon recast with a (very hot) replacement. Meet the new Dickon Tarly: Tom Hopper. Hopper, who's appeared in Black Sails and Merlin, made his debut in season seven's second episode during a tense conversation with Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) in King's Landing.

Breaking Down Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 1 – “Dragonstone”

Author: Chris Haydon

Spoilers For Game Of Thrones Season 7 Episode 1 Throughout

Waiting for Game of Thrones to return is challenging; its absence from our screens feels almost as long as the coldest of winters in Westeros. Thankfully, after a much prolonged period, our agony has been relieved, with Season 7 surging into our homes with ferocious force.

“Dragonstone” – our season premiere – beautifully maps the political landscape following the vast ramifications of its predecessor, but much like Daenerys Targaryen returning to the titular location, it reminds us just how much we’ve missed the Seven Kingdoms. They are violent, they are uncompromising, and they are laden with dangers and dishonesties, but they’re also home.

With George R.R. Martin’s “The Winds of Winter” firmly in the rearview, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are working from their own script; from their own think tank. If this introductory hour is anything to go by,

Game of Thrones: Of Course You Know Who Plays Archmaester Marwyn!

Game of Thrones added a new face to its already very large cast of characters with Sunday's season seven premiere. At the Citadel, Samwell Tarly is training to be a maester, learning at the hand of Archmaester Marwyn, played by award-winning star of stage and screen Jim Broadbent. Broadbent got his start over 40 years ago, but his first big role came in the 1985 sci-fi classic Brazil, where he played plastic surgeon to Katherine Helmond's vain Mrs. Ida Lowry in the fictional dystopian urban setting. The 68-year-old actor would go on to appear in some of the biggest films of the 1990s, including Enchanted April, The Crying Game, and Bullets Over Broadway, before his critically acclaimed turn as W.S. Gilbert (of the famed musical theater pair Gilbert and Sullivan) in Topsy-Turvy, a role that earned Broadbent a BAFTA nomination. On the heels of Topsy-Turvy, Broadbent had a big year in

Best ‘Harry Potter’ Book Plotlines and Scenes Left Out of the Movies

Exactly 20 years ago, J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” hit bookshelves, marking the birth of a massive franchise, both in literature and on the big screen.

The films are lauded by fans by being largely faithful to Rowling’s beloved books, but there are a few key plotpoints that many wish had made it into the movies. In honor of the 20th anniversary milestone, Variety breaks down some of the biggest omissions.

S.P.E.W.

Ask any Hermione Granger fan what the biggest injustice of the “Harry Potter” movies was, and they’ll likely tell you S.P.E.W. Hermione founded S.P.E.W. — Society for the Promotion of Elvish Welfare — after witnessing the gross treatment of house-elves at the 1994 Quidditch World Cup. While the movement was highlighted briefly in the movies, thanks in large part to Dobby, S.P.E.W. saw Hermione as a champion for equal rights

Voldemort Gets an Origin Story in Fan-Made Harry Potter Prequel

Ever wonder how Voldemort got his start down the dark path to becoming 'He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named'? While J.K. Rowling would cover some of Tom Riddle's backstory in the books, a new fan-made short film is looking to explore the myth even further. And it looks kind of amazing. Even if it's not part of the official narrative laid out by the creator herself.

Tryangle Films dropped the first teaser trailer for Voldemort: Origins of the Heir on their Youtube channel, and it has some pretty cool visual effects to go along with its compelling storyline. Instead of following Magizoologist Newt Scamander as the official Warner Bros. prequels have done, this early story set within the world of Harry Potter chooses to focus on the villain that rests at the heart of the tale. It's a work in progress. Says Triangle FIlms.

‘Voldemort: Origins of the Heir’ Trailer: Fan-Made Harry Potter Prequel Looks Amazing

The big-screen Harry Potter prequel “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” may have received a mixed reaction from Muggles, but a new fan film trailer showcases some amazing special effects and the spirit of J. K. Rowling’s original series. “Voldemort: Origins of the Heir” dropped its first footage on May 28, and this non-profit film has the professional feel of a Hollywood blockbuster. Directed, written and edited by Gianmaria Pezzato, “Origins” was spun off of the sixth book in the series, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.”

Supernatural? Perhaps. Baloney? Perhaps Not: Dark Shadows (2012)

Five years ago this weekend Tim Burton’s updating of Dark Shadows, the gothic/horror-themed soap opera which ran from 1966 to 1971 on ABC and was a seminal influence on a generation of budding horror fans (including Burton), was released on American movie screens, one weekend after Marvel’s The Avengers was still dictating the imaginations (and the wallets) of moviegoers everywhere. Given Burton’s track record with horror comedies (Beetlejuice being the primary example) and collaborations with Johnny Depp (Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Edward Scissorhands), a surprisingly low number of ticket-buyers seemed ultimately to care—the movie, which cost $150 million to make, and undoubtedly a hefty chunk of change more than that to market, would earn back only slightly more than half of that in the United States, though its final take globally came in at around $235 million. There were a few takers among critics, notably

Jude Law to Play a Young Dumbledore in 'Fantastic Beasts' Sequel

Fantastic Beasts has found its Dumbledore!

Jude Law will play a young Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them sequel, Warner Bros. announced via press release on Wednesday.

Exclusive: Emma Watson Says 'Harry Potter' Cast Has an Active Group Text Chain!

The film will take fans back to the world of Hogwarts, where Dumbledore, a contemporary of dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) is serving as the school's Transfiguration professor.

Law is the third actor to take on the role of Dumbledore. Richard Harris played the Hogwarts Headmaster and Harry Potter's (Daniel Radcliffe) mentor in the first two Harry Potter films, before Michael Gambon took over after his death.

J.K. Rowling, who made her screenwriting debut with the first Fantastic Beasts film, has also written the screenplay for the second movie, which is set to explore an "increasingly dark time for the wizarding world, where [link=nm
