Just the sort of odd film I love...
14 February 2009 | by (Bradenton, Florida) – See all my reviews

I love documentary shorts, though I am sure they aren't most people's "cup of tea". I love how people who have an interesting story to tell can talk about their lives--even when there might not be enough for a full-length film. These portraits about people often are touching and very honest in their style--direct and without the frills of most other films.

COMMODE CREATIONS is a lovely short film about an eccentric man who manages to give his retired life a sense of purpose and excitement by operating his toilet seat museum! After years as a plumber, Barney Smith now collects and decorates toilet seats. While this is odd, what makes this film interesting is how friendly and excited the man is to show off his collection. It's obvious that this bizarre hobby is appreciated by others--mostly because Barney comes off as so genuine and kind. This film is a great piece of Americana and if I ever get to that part of Texas, I'll try to see the place.

Well made and oddly compelling.
