The Notable Films of 2010: Part Seven

29 December 2009 7:16 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Mother and Child

Opens: 2010

Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington

Director: Rodrigo Garcia

Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.

Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not »

The people who ruined the decade

Part 2: From Andrew Sachs to Harry Potter

Andrew Sachs Sent the Beeb into cautious compliance meltdown

If Manuel had bothered to pick up his phone, Ross and Brand wouldn't have been tempted to leave their naughty messages, the Daily Mail wouldn't have been able to work itself up into a hypocritical moralistic lather, thousands of people who'd never heard the original show wouldn't have rung in to complain, Russell Brand would still have his Radio 2 show instead of Alan bleedin' Carr, and the BBC wouldn't get all jumpy every time Frankie Boyle made jokes about the Queen's fanny. See Also The Satanic Slut

Steve Jobs Killed the album with his zero-attention-span 'apps'

It was supposed to be so easy. Get your CDs, rip them in to iTunes, put them on your iPod. Then, whenever a latent desire to listen to Reo Speedwagon arose you could sate it right away. »

‘G.I. Joe’ Producer Grabs Nicolas Flamel Series

19 November 2009 11:11 AM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Comparing a series to J.K. Rowling’s has been the kiss of death in book adaptations for all but the Twilight saga.  Every few months another children’s movie crops up as “the next Harry Potter,” and ultimately takes a dive at the box office.

The Spiderwick Chronicles is a perfect example of “one and done” after it was paralleled to Potter.  Inkheart, starring Brendan Fraser, suffered the same fate.  Plus the failure of The Golden Compass and the declining appeal of even the Narnia series.  The upcoming Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief has also been cursed with the correlation, even picking up Potter veteran director Chris Columbus in an attempt to recapture the magic.

Which is why Transformers and G.I. Joe producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura may have just doomed his new acquisition right out of the gate. The major Hollywood player has picked up the six-part fantasy »

‘The Mortal Instruments’ Movie in Development, Targets ‘Twilight’ Demo

1 November 2009 11:37 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Even though Halloween is over and done, it appears as if studio execs in Hollywood are still prowling. They're not looking for candy, though. As it turns out, all they want this holiday season is to find the next Twilight. Variety is reporting that Unique Features and Constantin Films have signed writer Jessica Postigo, writer of the hostage drama Operation Checkmate, to adapt the first three novels in the four-book series The Mortal Instruments, from author Cassandra Clare. The series of children's books -- which includes City of Bones, City of Ashes, City of Glass and the upcoming City of Fallen Angels -- has been on the New York Times Bestseller List for more than two-straight months (as of June 2009). The series follows the story of 16-year old Clary Fray and her battles with hordes of vampires, werewolves and other assorted monsters. Something in the same vein as The Spiderwick Chronicles, but »

New 'Percy Jackson & The Olympians' Poster

31 October 2009 2:10 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

You don't have to throw out all of the following examples to assert that Percy Jackson & The Olympians is not a sure thing, but we will anyway. Of the many Harry Potter gravytrainers, only Twilight really appears to have exceeded expectations. Narnia needs a much better third chapter after Disney dropped it following Prince Caspian, while Eragon, Lemony Snicket, The Spiderwick Chronicles, City of Ember, The Golden Compass, and the brand new Vampire's Assistant have all failed to deliver. In the latest case, Vampire's Assistant probably won't get past $20 million. So we won't see a sequel there.

But the studios all want something similar to the lucre Warner Bros. has made courtesy of its British boy wizard, but it's demonstrably easier said than done. So Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief will have to overcome that genre history as well as a title that's just way too long. I »

DreamWorks Get Wicked

23 October 2009 12:22 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

DreamWorks have picked up the rights to teen novel series Wicked. Not to be confused with the Oz-riffing musical of the same name, Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguie's five-book series tells the tale of Holly Cathers, a teenager who discovers that she's the descendant of a coven of witches.Writers Aaron and Matthew Benay are attached to adapt the bestselling books - Witch, Curse, Legacy, Spellbound, and Resurrection - once they've finished on 1906, their 'quake collaboration with Pixar-ite Brad Bird. With the money-making machine that is Twilight in mind, we'd be surprised if their brief didn't major on Wicked's romantic subplot, in which Holly falls for a boy from a rival coven. The Gotham Group, the production house behind The Spiderwick Chronicles, will be putting the potion in motion.  »

Rumor has it, Dakota Fanning and 17-year-old Freddie Highmore have gone on a date. The pair, according to E! Online, was seen having "a dinner date" in Beverly Hills on Saturday night, July 25. Unfortunately, both Fanning and Highmore have not yet commented on the matter.

Aside from her personal life, Dakota Fanning is currently busy filming her upcoming biopic movie "The Runaways". On the film, she portrays Cherie Currie and co-stars with Kristen Stewart, who also works together with her on highly anticipated vampire drama flick "The Twilight Saga's New Moon".

As for Freddie Highmore, he is best known for his role as Peter Llewelyn Davies on 2004 movie "Finding Neverland". Sdcc ‘09: Astro Boy Panel (With Kristen Bell!)

23 July 2009 12:40 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Just got done with the Astro Boy panel at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con, and not surprisingly, the highlight of the show was actress Kristen Bell (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Heroes) who was in attendance along with co-star Freddie Highmore, producer Maryann Garger and director David Bowers (Flushed Away) to promote Astro Boy.

The panel featured a few clips, a new trailer and covered everything from what kind of “Easter eggs” we can expect to see in this modern version of Astro Boy, to new talk of a Veronica Mars movie. Check it out:

Astro Boy is of course a modern re-telling of the classic manga comic created by Osamu Tezuka in the 1950s. The character has appeared in two classic tv shows in the 60s and 80s and is still an enduring icon worldwide - especially in the Far East, where he is affectionately referred to as “The Japanese Mickey Mouse. »

Trailer for Jonathan King's Under The Mountain remake

13 July 2009 10:05 AM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

The first trailer for Black Sheep director, Jonathan King's, adaptation of New Zealand's beloved kiwi fantasy adventure Under the Mountain has dropped and, for straight up kiddie fare, its not too bad. Even though it looks like it'll be more tolerable than the latest Race to Witch Mountain remake, it obviously won't hold a candle to the truly luminous City of Ember. It sort of looks like The Spiderwick Chronicles if you ask me.

Synopsis:

When teenage twins Rachel and Theo Matheson investigate the creepy old house next door, they discover the Wilberforces - shape-shifting creatures that lurk beneath Auckland's ring of extinct volcanoes. Guided by the mysterious Mr Jones and with the help of their older cousin Ricky, the twins must rekindle the unique powers they once shared if they are to destroy this ancient evil - before it destroys them.

'Enchanted' Director Takes on Femme Dr. Frankenstein

23 June 2009 6:32 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Enchanted director Kevin Lima is on board to direct a new version of Mary Shelley's classic horror novel Frankenstein. Frank has a helluva twist, though; the scientist cooking up cadavers is an "antisocial" young woman in med school who decides to "create" her own friends. And... it's a romantic comedy. Can you say undead boyfriend?!

According to Variety, the writer and one of the executive producers of this potentially awesome project is Karey Kirkpatrick, the writer of The Spiderwick Chronicles, Charlotte's Web, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and James and the Giant Peach, among others. She also directed the Eddie Murphy vehicle Imagine That,

Both Lima and Kirkpatrick have a bunch of projects that are in development, although Lima's have more of a family-friendly vibe (The Spook's Apprentice, Candy Land, The Incredible Mr. Limpet, and Thumb). Kirkpatrick's optioned projects include writing, directing, and producing Captain Abdul's Pirate School, »

Inkheart – DVD

21 June 2009 1:07 PM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Inkheart

Directed by: Iain Softley

Cast: Brendan Fraser, Paul Bettany, Helen Mirren, Andy Serkis

Running Time: 1 hr 45 mins

Rating: PG

Plot: Mo Folchart (Fraser) is a “silvertongue” – someone who can bring the words of books to life by reading them out loud. Ten years ago, he lost his wife when he read from fantasy novel Inkheart, and is now trying to retrieve her with the help of his daughter (Bennett) and various characters from the book. An adaptation of the book of the same title written by Cornelia Funke.

Who’s It For? Anyone in elementary school, but anyone else should have problems with the performances and lack of explained plot.

Movie: So, Mo is a silvertongue, yet doesn’t it seem like they’re a dime a dozen? Speaking of dime a dozen, Fraser completely mails in this performance, it never once seems like he cares about being a father or hero. »
