A Chinese yuppie leads an empty existence until he falls head-over-heals in love with the mysterious Baober (the great Xun Zhou). One of the most visually extravagant movies of the year: it takes great cinematography, set-design, photographic tricks, wild camera-moves, CGI and goes completely overboard with it all. Baober is stylish to the point of incoherency. The plot develops into melodrama, but it doesn't work because all the razzle-dazzle film making has prevented you from any emotional investment in these characters. A failure, yes, but an interesting one and I'd love to see more of this director. **1/2
