Storyline

From the one episode that I watched the introduction of (on Retro TV, currently 10 pm Saturday evenings during their SciFi line-up), it appears that this show is like the oldie that Elvira used to host in another big TV market. Just like Elvira did, "Svengoolie" hosts, introduces, ridicules and otherwise shares movies with his viewing friends. In other words, "Son of Svengoolie" was the local movie show, which evolved into "Svengoolie," the FOX network version. Written by Hungry Byteman

Trivia

Occasionally mentioned Berwyn, Illinois when reading fan mail or at other times during the breaks with the host, Svengoolie (before going to commercial, etc.). Doing the name of the Chicago suburb was a running joke for the show. See more »

Chance meeting with Jerry G. Bishop
11 August 2007 | by (Camarillo, California) – See all my reviews

When Screaming Yellow Threatre was on the air in the early 70's, the identity of Svengoolie was a thinly veiled Secret. Many viewers knew that the part was played by WFLD's main announcer, Jerry G. Bishop. I enjoyed watching the segues into and out of the movies and the commercials. There were loads of cheesy props and rubber chickens and cries of Berwyn! (a Chicago suburb) Once a plywood coffin collapsed amidst the laughter of Svengoolie and stage hands alike and they cut right back to the movie. I ran into Mr. Bishop at a social gathering in the mid-70's, several years after Screaming Yellow Theatre was off the air. I expressed my admiration for his character Svengoolie. He responded, "He's dead, man! Let him Rest in Peace." Berwyn!
