NBC promoted this 'special' quite heavily in the months preceding broadcast with pieces in, among others, the NY Times and Show Magazine. These focused primarily on inexplicable events during filming including collapsing cameras, slamming doors and footage printing in muddy black or orange rather than the much-publicised 'Living Color'. The problems ceased once director De Felitta asked permission of the spirits before each take.
The car used by the trio is a 1909 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, registration R1909, that can still be seen in the collection of the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu Abbey, Hampshire, UK, the third of the haunted houses. It had been 'discovered' in Scotland in the 1950s being used as a breakdown truck. Once restored it made several onscreen appearances including an episode of "The Avengers" and a Roy Orbison interview.
Producer/ director Frank De Felitta was also a sometime author of ghostly novels, of which "Audrey Rose" and "The Entity" were filmed.
