Jack Whitehall: a class act

5 October 2012 4:00 PM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

He's made his name playing insufferable public school toffs. But is that the real Jack Whitehall?

Jack Whitehall sits outside a Putney cafe, looking slightly harassed. This is his third attempt at finding an interview venue. The first place he suggested we meet was closed, not unsurprisingly, given that it was a pub and it's 10.30 on a Wednesday morning. So he suggested another pub, also closed. Eventually, he leads me on a lengthy walk to discover somewhere that isn't a pub. Does he know this area? He frowns: yes, he grew up in Putney and still lives here. "My parents' house is just down there," he says, pointing across the road.

You could suggest that this is all very Jack Whitehall-ish. He has, after all, made a career out of playing clueless public schoolboys of varying degrees of ghastliness. Pj in Fresh Meat, the student sitcom by Jesse Armstrong »

Nick Grimshaw: Meet BBC's It-boy

11 July 2012 3:01 AM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

He's irreverent, witty, cheeky... and friend to Agyness, Daisy, Peaches and many more of Britain's hottest young celebs. He's also BBC's brightest new TV and radio star - which might explain why he's working seven days a week. By Miranda Sawyer

It is Sunday evening. In a dingy room at Radio 1 two skinny young men in big plastic sumo suits are revving up for action.

'Ready?' says a producer. 'Ok, let's see you growling at the camera...

'And... go!'

Simon from Scottish noiseniks Biffy Clyro and Nick 'Grimmy' Grimshaw, presenter of Radio 1's Switch, launch themselves at each other with gusto but little formal technique. They roll around, legs flailing like broken lolly sticks. Annie Mac, Grimmy's co-presenter, declares Simon the winner and then everyone - presenters, band, producer, camera-woman - piles down to the studio. And this is radio?

Switch is indeed radio, but the Today programme needn't worry. »

Russell Brand has likened his new TV project to when he hosted Big Brother's Big Mouth. The British comedian and actor's new show Brand X will involve audience participation in a similar vein to his popular Channel 4 spinoff show. The programme sees Brand analyse and lead a debate on the reporting of celebrity and media news stories in front of a live studio audience. Speaking to What's on TV, Brand explained of the Big Mouth connection: "It's like when I used to go in the audience on Big Brother with that daft wand talking to everybody. (more) »
