A Missing Marvel Masterpiece?, 30 September 2004
Author: BijouBob8mm from United States

I recall stumbling across this to rent on the shelves of a Video Towne store in the mid-1980s, and the cover caught my eye. I took it home, popped it into the machine, and immediately experienced Deja Vu. This cartoon was based on Marvel Comic's monthly color series, "Tomb Of Dracula," from the early 1970s. (Which is when and where the character of Blade made his debut appearance.) I even still have the issue(s) used as the springboard for the story. My memories are a bit dim, but it seems as if the box for this was sketchy on details, and I don't recall any mention of Marvel being made on the packaging. Too bad this is out of print, as it would be neat to see it again and see how it holds up. Maybe it could be reissued under the Marvel banner and given better promotion, as the film seems to have slipped by unnoticed. It's so obscure, even die-hard fans of Marvel and/or Japanimation/anime' often have never heard of it.

Dracula: Sovereign Of The Damned [ MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS ], 1 September 2004

This is a Japanese animation film, or as some call it, animé, based on the character of Dracula. I don't particularly like animé, but it's not as bad as you might think. In fact it's pretty good. It is much more of an adult's film than for children.

In modern Boston, there is a Satanic ritual being performed, and a young woman by the name of Delores is to be sacrificed. Count Dracula crashes the ritual, and takes off with Delores. Because he has so much love for her, Dracula cannot bring himself to drink her blood, and instead fathers her child, named Janus. Some of Dracula's enemies try to kill him, but, accidentally kill the newborn Janus instead.

Meanwhile, Dracula's enemies are preparing to finish him off. A team of vampire hunters including Frank Drake (one of Dracula's descendants), and Hans Harker (who is in a wheel-chair). And to top it off, Dracula has been stripped of all of his vampiric powers by Satan, whom he supposedly betrayed in a deal. He desperately needs another vampire to restore his powers and to avenge the death of his son, Janus.

I won't tell what happens at the end, just so I don't spoil it TOO much and you decide to watch it. This is a pretty rare film, no one I know has even heard of it. It's pretty different, to say the least. If you can even find it, I recommend it to any vampire fans.

Dracula Cartoon, 27 March 2007

Greetings fellow IMDb browsers and movie fans. Ages ago, when VHS ruled the home entertainment franchise, I recall going to one of the VHS rental shops with my dad (RIP:-(). There it was, a cartoon about Dracula*. Granted I must have been only 12 or 13, but the idea of watching a cartoon about Dracula seemed to good to be true. Especially when there was a barrage of Marvel superheroes released by Guild Home Video that were a bit too formulaic. Therefore my short review will undoubtedley be subject to emotional colouring. What a cool movie. Dracula falls in love, has a son. The devil himself was in the movie. Furthermore the movie has reference to a prostitute, quite a dark issue for a cartoon to deal with. What more can you ask for. I'll be the first to admit that animation may have been somewhat basic, in comparison to what we have now. It's always those movies that you see when you're young that never get a release on DVD. Unless of course, you take Once upon a time in America's example and wait nearly 20 years for a release on DVD. Toei Studios please release this little gem of a movie. I'm sure there might be a copy in some car boot sale on VHS. cf a scene in the X-files where the cure for a virus is in some locker in a non-descript train/bus station.

*I do remember that to be the title on the video box in red text, I don't recall a subtitle.

Cheesy, goofy and ultimately incoherent, 25 December 2004

This Japanese adaptation of the classic 1970s "Tomb of Dracula" American comic book series is pretty much forgotten today, and it's easy to see why. At 89 minutes, this TV-movie (with the usual fade-ins and outs for commercials) seems made out of several different sagas cobbled together, as Dracula, essentially a good guy here, faces different enemies (from the usual vampire hunters to his own son turned God's agent, to Satanists, to Satan himself, to a new King of the Vampires...) without much character development whatsoever, and through plot holes so big they could contain a whole graveyard each. Plus, it has all the worst characteristics of late 70s films and cartoons, including the obligatory disco soundtrack. The animation is far from the greatest anime films, with fine backgrounds but terribly drawn characters that seem to come out of a Saturday morning cartoon of the era (despite the occasional brief nudity). Not that it has not its interesting points, like a vulnerable Dracula becoming human again and trying to recover his vampiric condition, but everything is so underdeveloped that it's ultimately worthless. Also, I could have done without those shiny fangs, and without that son of Drac right out of Thunderbirds. And, alas, despite it being based on "Tomb of Dracula", no Blade here, just the usual descendants of Van Helsing, Harker, and Dracula himself (and it's obvious from the beginning which one of the vampire hunters will eventually bite the dust). It could have been a good TV-series, but, in its absurd condensation, (sorry for this old awful pun) this Dracula sucks. 3/10.

He thirsts for blood!, 20 December 2006

This is one of two movies I have ever seen that should be under the category of "So Bad It Is Good." People say "Plan 9 From Outer Space" is one, but I don't. You can only watch Plan 9 once or twice then you realize it just sucks.

This movie, and I speak of the English Dubbed version, was so amazingly bad that it was GREAT. And I mean GREAT.

I have NEVER laughed so hard in my life. This is the greatest comedy ever, of all time ever.

The other movie you should try and find is Litzsomania. While it doesn't have the high re-watch value this movie does, it is amazing.

Movies like Meet the Feebles and anything by John Waters strive for what this masterpiece gets to.

CHECK IT OUT! 9/10
