The Best Holiday TV Episodes of the 21st Century, Ranked
Holiday episodes are rarely a show’s best, but they’re often the most enduring. CBS still airs a colorized version of the “I Love Lucy” Christmas episode, repackaged as a perennial special, 60 years later. The image of The Fonz eating out of a can, alone on Christmas Eve, is probably one of the best-remembered scenes from “Happy Days.” And “The West Wing’s” 1999 episode “In Excelsis Deo” not only won an Emmy, but its takes on homeless veterans and hate crimes are just as relevant today, nearly two decades later. And of course, it was a Christmas episode that launched the longest-running scripted series in primetime, “The Simpsons,” all the way back in 1989.

As the networks more wholeheartedly embrace the holidays as a marketing tool, there has been an explosion in Christmas-themed movies and specials in recent years. But there’s still something special about celebrating the holidays with

Glow's Betty Gilpin Prepares For Wrestling Dramedy's Season 2: 'I Feel Like My Soul Was in a Five-Car Pileup'
The thing about being one of the leads in a 1980s-set dramedy about lady wrestlers is, your look is still stuck in the Reagan era even after the cameras stop rolling for the day.

“I’m looking at my gel French manicure now, and that, combined with my spray tan, every public place I walk into, I want to clink a glass, like, ‘Ding, ding, ding’ and announce that this is for a character and not from my personal choice,” Glow‘s Betty Gilpin says, chuckling.

Supergirl season 3 episode 6 review: Midvale

Kara and Alex go to ground to lick their wounds in this blast-from-the-past episode of Supergirl. Spoilers ahead...

This review contains spoilers.

3.6 Midvale

From the start, this episode of Supergirl felt different. The mournful soundtrack, the vintage car on the lonely mountain road, the focus on the Danvers sisters. This is the episode we needed to mark some time and hold some space for the collective pain shared by the Danvers sisters. It’s so much more successful than similar efforts in the first couple of episodes because it allows us to follow along on Alex and Kara’s journey, rather than just hear about it.

The bookends of this episode tell us about the journey the writers are hoping we will take with these mourning siblings. On paper, it’s

Tessa Thompson to Receive Tribute at Napa Valley Film Festival

Thompson in “Thor: Ragnarok

Tessa Thompson dominated the weekend box office with “Thor: Ragnarok,” and now comes word that the rising star will be honored at the Napa Valley Film Festival. A press release announced that she’ll receive the Jcb Collection Trailblazer Tribute at this year’s Celebrity Tributes presentation. Set to take place November 9, the event’s other honorees include “The Intern” director Nancy Meyers and “Twilight” actress Nikki Reed.

Before she made the leap to Asgardian warrior in the Marvel universe, Thompson was best known for her roles in “Dear White People” and “Creed.” Her other credits include “Westworld,” “Selma,” and “Veronica Mars.”

“Tessa is an actress who has demonstrated in her career the ability to take on unique, dynamic roles that demonstrate her remarkable range and ability to bring her humanity to each performance,” said Marc Lhormer, co-founder of the Napa Valley Film Festival. “As a ‘trailblazer,’ she is the embodiment of someone who is undaunted by taking risks and in doing so, achieves great success.”

“Valkyrie in the comics is … blonde and doesn’t look like me,” Thompson has said of her “Ragnarok” character. “But when a lot of these comics were written, it was in a time before we had conversation about being inclusive. (I like to avoid the word ‘diversity,’ because it annoys me.) It was a time when it made sense to have these women that were fighting and so strong wear these American Apparel bathing suits — which is so funny. My costume design was based on stuff that we see in the comics now — like the traditional sort of Valkyrie armor that I get reunited with in the second half of the film,” she explained. “That appears in the comics and looks very, very similar. But I felt very strongly that we wanted the costume to have some bulk.”

The physical reference for the character was Sarah Connor in the second “Terminator” movie, “which is incredible because she’s in the best shape ever and is just, like, all muscle,” Thompson said. The goal was “to create a character that was not conventionally beautiful. Just sort of messy — the idea was that she just never washes her face, you know? There’s nothing pristine about this woman.”

Thompson’s upcoming roles include sci-fi flick “Annihilation,” which sees her heading on a mysterious expedition, and Nia DaCosta’s “Little Woods,” a modern Western about two sisters co-starring “Cinderella’s” Lily James.

Tessa Thompson to Receive Tribute at Napa Valley Film Festival was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.
