A unique venue for a unique film written and directed by Cyril Morin and starring Sam Quartin, Chris Schellenger and Davy J. Marr, “NY84” follows the adventures of three young artists in the downtown New York art scene in the early 1980s. Young and carefree, Kate, Anton, and Keith party, photograph, paint, sing, and play their way through the clubs and lofts of Alphabet City.

The party ends in 1984 when Anton and Keith contract a mysterious illness known as the “gay cancer.” We gain an intimate glimpse into their creative and emotional lives as the three lose their youth and innocence.

Cyril Morin

This is a lyrical poetic paen to those times some of us were lucky enough to have lived through. The sexual revolution and its sexual freedom in effect then for the newly liberated homosexual community, also opened the way for Kate to express herself. And it opened a door for transexuals, women and the whole diversity of humanity to assert itself today. »

Train to Busan Review: They’ll Punch Your Ticket With Their Teeth

20 July 2016 11:13 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Train to Busan Shows a Taste for Human Flesh and an Eye for Social CommentaryIt’s World War Z on the Korean Express.

Zombies! Love ’em or hate ’em, movies about zombies are here to stay. The majority of them will continue to head straight to DVD as their budgets and degree of film-making talent involved demand, but once or twice a year one comes along that truly benefits from being seen on a bigger screen. Yeon Sang-ho’s live-action debut, Train to Busan, is one of those exceptions despite hitting more than a few bumps in its journey.

Seok-woo (Yoo Gong) is a busy man doing important things at his job destined to make him both powerful and wealthy, but focusing on work leaves little time for his daughter, Su-an (Kim Soo-ahn, with a performance that once again suggests all child actors should train in South Korea). The girl is understandably lonely, and »

A 10 Step Guide to Hate Watching a Show

20 July 2016 10:44 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Using ABC’s Once Upon a Time as an example.

We all have that show that we cannot stand for whatever reason. The characters are annoying, the writing is cheesy, it’s a tacky “reality” show, all of your friends watch it so you just have to watch it too, whatever. But you still tune in every week to watch it, and every week you ask yourself, “Why am I watching this? I don’t even like this show.” The second you start asking yourself that, you have crossed into hate-watch territory. How did you get there? How did this something you once enjoyed become something you now hate? Here’s a step-by-step guide explaining the process using my hate-watch show, ABC’s Once Upon a Time.

1. The show has to have a premise or showrunner or actor that initially drew you into the story for whatever reason. In the beginning, Once »

In a Valley of Violence Review: Ti West Delivers with John Wayne Wick-lite

18 July 2016 7:21 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

In a Valley of Violence Is a Small Western Packing a Bloody PunchFantasia Film Festival 2016

Writer/director Ti West’s filmography is populated mostly with dark genre fare of the thrilling and/or horrific variety, but while they typically have moments of humor you’d be hard-pressed to call any of them comedies. The possible exception there is his 2011 chiller, The Innkeepers, which delivers more than enough laughs and smiles to justify the label while also being legitimately scary. I’d argue it’s his best film due in part to the masterful balance in tone he creates throughout.

West’s latest leaves the horror genre behind all together for the dry, deadly desert of the post-Civil War American southwest, but while In a Valley of Violence is a traditional western through and through — perhaps too traditional at times —he once again imbues it with comedy and charisma that work beautifully to elevate the entertainment without stifling »

How Pokémon Go and Mr. Robot Are Making Me Paranoid

14 July 2016 11:35 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

And Why This Might Not Be A Bad Thing.“Can someone please explain this Pokémon Go thing to me?”

It was one o’clock on Saturday morning and my friends and I had just driven across the Queensboro Bridge, ready to snake our way through Central Park towards the West Side of Manhattan. My friend handed me his phone and opened the app.

“It’s easy, just walk around and click on locations to grab stuff and when you see a Pokémon pop up, try to catch it.”

I looked down at the screen and saw my friend’s character walking through a grid that began to shift and move forward as we drove. I clicked on one of the locations that popped up near me and was surprised to find that it pinpointed a real location, complete with a picture likely lifted from Google Street View. Even more surprising to me was that these locations weren »

Our Most Anticipated Movies at Fantasia 2016

14 July 2016 10:59 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Plus several titles we already know are worth your time.

This year’s Fantasia International Film Festival starts today in the beautiful city of Montreal, and we couldn’t be more excited. (Well, I could be if I was there, but I don’t arrive until Saturday night so my peak joy will have to wait until then.) We’ve already revealed the three-part lineup announcement here, here, and here, but as the fest begins we wanted to go ahead and share the films we’re most anticipating as well as recommend some movies that we’ve already seen and loved.

As of this moment I’ve seen twenty-five of the fest’s titles, but that’s still less than one-fifth of films playing this year. Here are some of my favorites.

The director of The Chaser delivers a terrific horror/thriller hybrid from South Korea, The Wailing (full review), which pits a hapless cop against the »

Why I Wrote a Book About The Unheralded Genius in Michael Bay’s Films

14 July 2016 9:44 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Fsr Illustration

About two years ago, I wrote a book on the films of Michael Bay. This unauthorized critical examination saw release in November 2014 under the title Michael F-ing Bay: The Unheralded Genius in Michael Bay’s Films. I knew I was throwing down a gauntlet with a provocative title like that and the reaction to that mere declaration. One troll kept loudly accusing me of writing the book so Michael Bay would hire me. He must have really liked this joke because he made it on several posts, across many websites that carried the announcement of my book. (The Broken Projector was one such outlet and I had a very interesting conversation with Scott Beggs about the book.) This suggested to me that not only did he have no understanding of how Hollywood worked, he almost certainly hadn’t read the book.

That question “Why would someone write a book about Michael Bay?” has »

Whiplash director Damien Chazelle is singing and dancing with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.

When you fall in love with someone it leaves you breathless, exhilarated, and longing. There is the undeniable chemistry you feel with that person. It’s electric. You can feel it. You look towards art to capture and imitate what you feel. Chemistry between actors can make or break what it is you are watching. Two of the actors that have mastered that distinctive spark between people in love are Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. They first appeared together in Crazy, Stupid, Love and were remarkably charismatic and charming. Then they were paired together in Gangster Squad. While the film was a dud, their chemistry was the bright spot that makes the film. Now, they are back playing lovers for a third time in La La Land, Damien Chazelle’s hotly anticipated second feature.

Megan Mullally had been acting professionally since the early ’80s but it wasn’t until “Will & Grace” premiered in 1998 that she found her breakout role on camera. Groundbreaking at the time, the series really took off in season two, landing 11 Emmy noms and wins for Mullally, co-star Sean Hayes and best comedy series. Mullally was nominated six more times, winning again for the final season in 2006.

What stands out about that first nomination?
