‘Twin Peaks’ and Beyond: The Best Shows Inspired by David Lynch’s TV Phenomenon

19 April 2017 4:23 PM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

It’s been more than 25 years since “Twin Peaks” first rocked ABC’s airwaves with the question of “Who killed Laura Palmer?” and made it clear that David Lynch was a master of television as well as film. While the auteur is returning with a revival series that picks up a quarter-century after the events of the original, we don’t have to only watch Showtime to get that “Twin Peaks” vibe.

Although the series only ran two seasons, the show has influenced countless of TV shows. The most obvious homages feature a central murder mystery that unearths the sordid underbelly of a small town. Wonderfully bizarre characters and dreamy, borderline nightmarish elements may also be hallmarks of a Lynchian homage.

MIPTV Feels Full Impact of Digital TV Revolution

6 April 2017 7:54 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Cannes — Graced by enticing pre-l.A. screenings of Disney and Lionsgate shows and large excitement at sneak-peaked scenes from Adam Price’s “Ride Upon the Storm” and Tom Tykwer’s “Babylon Berlin,” 2017’s MipTV trade fair underscored why Hollywood still dominates much of global TV, as well as the new raised bar of ambition of European dramas.

Amazon’s Roy Price laid out plans for Amazon to drive into more originals, though he did not go into specifics. Both Amazon and Netflix took meetings with key content suppliers at MipTV. Meanwhile, MipTV caught the TV business, and indeed the world, in vertiginous transition, thanks in business terms to a phenomenon little short of a revolution: the global broadcast of foreign-language shows, currently driven by Netflix.

Change, however, goes beyond that. Not for nothing, The Wit’s Virginia Mouseler drilled down in a Wednesday Fresh TV Fiction on 2017 as the “Year of Trans-Genre, »

How John Ridley Juggles Three Prestigious Shows — Without Sacrificing Quality

4 April 2017 10:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

“Welcome to ‘American Crime.’”

That’s how showrunner John Ridley greeted actor Babou Ceesay on his first day on set. Which would have been fine — except that they were filming “Guerrilla,” the new six-episode limited series Ridley created, wrote, and directed for Showtime (premiering April 16).

Guerrilla” star Freida Pinto laughs at the memory, which became a running joke for her and her co-star, dismissing it as a rare slip for an otherwise intensely focused filmmaker. “He’s one of the few male multi-taskers who can give everything its due attention,” she says.

In fact, it had been quite a busy year for Ridley: While “Guerrilla” was under way in London, the third season of ABC’s “American Crime” was in production in Los Angeles. He was also juggling “Let It Fall,” a two-hour documentary about the 25th anniversary of the L.A. riots for ABC News (April 28), and a pilot, “Presence »

MipTV: Disney Media Distribution Talks Up Marvel, Shonda, Marc Cherry Shows

4 April 2017 7:39 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Cannes —  More than anything else, the Disney Media Distribution showcase at the first MipTV Pre-l.A Screenings gave a tantalizing glimpse of mouth-watering series, though often no more, while suggested some bases of Hollywood’s studios’ continuing dominance of international TV markets, at least in the pay-tv and often Svod arena.

Those factors cut various ways: Behemoth IPs, talent relations, and an increasing willingness to ring distribution options.

All were on display on Tuesday morning at MipTV, where Mark Endemaño, Disney Media Distribution Svp & general manager, Emea – speaking with the ease of a man who knew he had something good on offer – unveiled current state of play on six shows Disney will be talking up with further details at the L.A. Screenings.

The six series form part of 20 comedies and drama pilots, including Disney’s Freeform shows with ABC, which Disney has at various stages of production, Endemaño said. The »

Lois Smith-Starrer “Marjorie Prime” Acquired by FilmRise

30 March 2017 9:02 AM, PDT | Women and Hollywood | See recent Women and Hollywood news »

“Majorie Prime”: Sundance Institute

FilmRise has acquired U.S. distributions rights to Lois Smith and Jon Hamm’s holographic love story “Marjorie Prime,” Deadline reports. Directed by Michael Almereyda (“Hamlet”), the sci-fi film co-stars Geena Davis and Tim Robbins. “Marjorie Prime” took home the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Feature Film Prize at Sundance this year, where it made its world premiere.

Based on Jordan Harrison’s Pulitzer-nominated play, the film is set in the near future and centers on Marjorie (Smith), who “spends time with the young likeness of her deceased husband, Walter (Hamm). This revitalized Walter is a sophisticated holographic projection that provides companionship while stimulating Marjorie’s memory — allowing her to explore their shared past as she lives with dementia,” Deadline summarizes. “Marjorie’s daughter Tess (Davis) and her husband, Jon (Robbins), develop their own complex feelings about the new Walter, uneasily coming to terms with the nature of identity, memory, and our ever-shifting relationship to technology.” Smith originated the role of Marjorie in the stage version of the story. She first played the character in 2014.

According to the source, FilmRise is planning to launch a theatrical release mid-2017 and will “push all the main actors with a targeted award-season campaign.” Smith is currently 86 years old, so she’ll be 87 by the time Oscar nominations are announced. The oldest actress to receive a Best Actress nomination thus far is Emmanuelle Riva, who was 85 years old when she scored a nod in 2013 for “Amour.”

Smith’s career spans nearly seven decades, with film credits including “East of Eden,” “Five Easy Pieces,” “Fried Green Tomatoes,” “Dead Man Walking,” and “Please Give.” “Desperate Housewives,” “True Blood,” and “Grace and Frankie” are among her TV credits.

“We are thrilled to announce our acquisition of this superb Sundance award-winner,” said FilmRise CEO Danny Fisher. “Michael Almereyda has created a subtle and masterly adaptation, and the performances by Jon Hamm, Lois Smith, Geena Davis, and Tim Robbins are extraordinary.”

Marjorie Prime” will also be available on Amazon Prime Video this year.

Grace and Frankie, Season 3: Return to Form

30 March 2017 7:30 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

By Spencer Coile

A good series is not born overnight. Oftentimes, the pilot episode is not indicative of the quality a show might have down the road. Even if it is incredible, the series still runs a risk of running off the rails in subsequent seasons (Desperate Housewives). Still, there is something especially rewarding about a series that, after two lackluster seasons, can come back swinging in its third. And after indulging in half of its third outing, it is safe to say that Grace and Frankie has carved out a very unique space for its viwers.

Picking up shortly where season two left off, season three to Grace and Frankie finds its two leading characters developing their own sex toy business geared toward older women. Of course, this is all easier said than done. After all, they still are an odd couple. Meanwhile, their ex-husbands Sol and Robert, neogotiate issues of retirement, »

“Empire” went on hiatus in December, and after more than three months, the broadcast juggernaut returns this week with the back-half of its third season.

When the Fox drama last signed off, the Lyon family left viewers with many cliffhangers — Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) sent Jamal (Jussie Smollett) to rehab; Angelo (Taye Diggs) and Cookie’s relationship was left on the rocks after Lucious (Terrence Howard) uncovered his dark past; and Andre (Trai Byers) vowed to kill his father, Lucious. “The Path” Co-ep Annie Weisman Signs Overall Deal With Universal TV

22 March 2017 7:02 AM, PDT | Women and Hollywood | See recent Women and Hollywood news »

Annie Weisman: Wme

The Path” co-executive producer Annie Weisman has inked a two-year overall deal with Universal TV, Deadline reports. She’s written four episodes of the Hulu series starring Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”), Michelle Monaghan (“True Detective”), and Hugh Dancy (“Hannibal”). The show, created by Jessica Goldberg, centers on members of a fictional religion — or cult — known as Meyerism, and is currently in its second season.

Weisman has been working in TV for over a decade, and has penned episodes of series such as “About a Boy,” “Suburgatory,” “Samantha Who?” “Desperate Housewives,” and “Dead Like Me.” “This development season, Weisman wrote a legal dramedy project for Uni TV and Jason Katims’ studio-based True Jack Prods. In a competitive situation with three networks interested, the pitch had landed at CBS with a script commitment plus penalty,” Deadline writes. The hour-long as-yet-untitled project centers on two sisters with wildly different political beliefs who rally together to save their disgraced and imprisoned father’s law firm.

“We’re thrilled to be in business with a writer as versatile as Annie,” said Pearlena Igbokwe, President of Universal Television. “From her stints on ‘Desperate Housewives’ and ‘Suburgatory’ to her stellar work on ‘The Path,’ she can do it all.”

Weissman is also an accomplished playwright. Her credits include “A Totally Meaningful Ritual,” “Hold Please,” and “Be Aggressive,” the latter of which was a finalist for the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize.
