The Notable Films of 2011: Part Five

31 December 2010 5:23 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Factory

Opens: 2011

Cast: John Cusack, Jennifer Carpenter, Ksenia Solo, Mae Whitman, Sonya Walger

Director: Morgan O'Neill

Summary: An obsessed cop is on the trail of a serial killer prowling the streets of Buffalo, New York. When his teenage daughter disappears, he drops any pretension and professional restraint he might have to get the killer.

Analysis: Shot almost three years ago now, Dark Castle had originally planned to release this thriller back in late 2009. However for reasons unspecified, it has been sitting on a shelf for some time and keeps getting delayed. In cases like these, the most obvious reason is usually the correct one - it stinks (eg. "Case 39"). The company certainly has had its fair share of box-office duds lately including "Whiteout," "Ninja Assassin," "The Losers," "Orphan" and "Splice".

Yet Cusack generally has good taste in projects, his last venture into horror was the surprisingly effective Stephen King »

Three Stooges Inches Closer to Reality

2 December 2010 11:00 PM, PST | movies.about.com | See recent About.com Hollywood Movies news »

After nearly a decade in the works and quite a while spent in limbo due to MGM's financial troubles, The Three Stooges movie is likely to wind up at Fox. And if the studio does get the film, it'll be aiming for a March 2011 start of production.

Bobby and Peter Farrelly are still interested in directing the Stooges movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter, however it's not confirmed who will actually be playing the three lead roles. Back in March 2009 it looked like the film could be going forward with Sean Penn, Jim Carrey and Benicio Del Toro as Larry, Curly and Moe.

The Farrelly's vision for the film, which they co-wrote, will capture the tone of the Stooges comedy but is set in the present day.

Before they start work on The Three Stooges, the Farrellys will be launching Hall Pass with Owen Wilson, Christina Applegate, Jenna Fischer, and »

Malin Akerman Takes Porn Role From Lindsay Lohan

22 November 2010 6:38 AM, PST | TheFabLife | See recent TheFabLife news »

Remember that Linda Lovelace biopic Lindsay Lohan would bring up to try and stay out of rehab? Well, it’s no longer an issue. Producers have dropped LiLo from the sure-to-be-scintillating Inferno, replacing her with infinitely less troubled Malin Akerman, last seen waxing rhapsodic about Wanderlust co-star Jennifer Aniston. The filmmakers blamed the difficulty of insuring Lindsay for the change-up. While Akerman doesn’t have Lindsay’s name recognition, this still seems like a wise move; though Akerman’s mostly appeared in comedies like The Heartbreak Kid and Couples Retreat, she’s best known for the mid-flight bone sesh she enjoyed to “Hallelujah” in Watchmen. Compare the raciness of that scene to Lindsay’s awkward pole-dancing in I Know Who Killed Me, and it’s clear who’s more qualified to play a bare-assed Inferno. Malin Akerman Taking Over for Lindsay Lohan in ‘Inferno’

22 November 2010 2:10 AM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

Lindsay Lohan’s fire has been put out.

Apparently, Lohan has been to enough dark places in real life and doesn’t need to partake on such a journey with cameras rolling, as she’s no longer attached to play adult film start Linda Lovelace in director Matthew Wilder’s ‘Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story.’

Lohan has been officially replaced by “Watchmen” star Malin Akerman, the director announced on his Facebook page.

“We have stuck by Lindsay very patiently for a long time with a lot of love and support,” he said. ”Ultimately, the impossibility of insuring her — and some other issues — have made it impossible for us to go forward. We are so honored to have Malin and know that she will kill it.”

This will be quite the juicy role for Akerman, who’s usually known for such goofy comedies as “The Heartbreak Kid,” “The Proposal, »

Malin Akerman Replaces Lindsay Lohan in Linda Lovelace Biopic

21 November 2010 10:52 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Throughout her trials (literally and figuratively), tribulations and troubles, director Matthew Wilder was optimistic about keeping Lindsay Lohan onboard Inferno, the biopic surrounding famed Deep Throat porn star Linda Lovelace. The actress replaced Anna Faris on the project back in May, but since then she's been faced with a myriad of issues in court, rehab and more. Now that Lohan is supposed to remain in rehab until 2011, Wilder has been forced to replace her. The Wrap reports Malin Akerman has stepped up to take on the role which has been described as tawdry, but containing potential for a powerful, and darkly dramatic performance. As for the risque nature of the role itself, if you've seen Akerman's work in The Heartbreak Kid, Watchmen or Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, you know that the actress doesn't have much of a problem taking her clothes off on camera. Frankly, I don't »

Malin Akerman caught up in 'Inferno'

21 November 2010 4:58 PM, PST | Pop2it | See recent Pop2it news »

Once upon a time Anna Faris was going to play Linda Lovelace in director Matthew Wilder's biopic about the porn star. But she dropped out because she wanted to focus on her comedy career.

Now Malin Akerman, who has already established her knack for comedy in movies like "The Heartbreak Kid," "27 Dresses" and "Couples Retreat,"  has signed on to take over the role from Lindsay Lohan, according to online reports.

Wilder had been sticking by Lohan for months despite her rotating door at rehab that was only equaled by the one she had going at the courthouse. However, when it became clear that her schedule would not be in any shape to commit to starring in a movie in the near future -- not to mention the difficulties in insuring her -- the production finally had to move on. »

Celebrity scandal: Lindsay Lohan stripped of porn role due to rehab issues?

21 November 2010 12:45 PM, PST | Green Celebrity | See recent Green Celebrity news »

Seems that celebrity rehab is getting in the way of the ability of celebrity actress Lindsay Lohan to star in porn! Gossip Cop is reporting on Sunday, November 21, 2010 that celebrity actress Lindsay Lohan, currently convalescing, er, recovering at the celebrity rehab Betty Ford Center, has been replaced in the upcoming movie Inferno, a bio of the life of celebrity porn star Linda Lovelace. The celebrity actress pegged to replace celebrity rehabber Lindsay Lohan is Malin Akerman, star of Couples Retreat and The Heartbreak Kid. Gossip Cop had indicated yesterday that famed celebrity director Matthew Wilder insisted that celebrity actress Lindsay Lohan be replaced, claiming that the rehabbing star was unable to be insured, among other issues. A source close to celebrity actress Lindsay Lohan and her family refuted celebrity director Wilder’s claim, saying that the celebrity actress bowed out of the porn role simply to concentrate on her ongoing »

Malin Akerman replaces Lindsay Lohan in Inferno

21 November 2010 8:00 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Lindsay Lohan has been replaced in the biopic of Deep Throat porn actress Linda Lovelace by Malin Akerman. Inferno is set to roll into production soon, adapted from the book “Ordeal: An Autobiography by Linda Lovelace with Mike McGrady,” by Matthew Wilder.

Akerman has appeared in the films Watchmen, Couple’S Retreat and The Heartbreak Kid.

It seems that Lindsay Lohan was ultimately uninsurable on the film after Wilder told E! Online: “We are withdrawing our offer from Lindsay Lohan,” he said, “We have stuck by Lindsay very patiently for a long time with a lot of love and support. Ultimately, the impossibility of insuring her–and some other issues–have made it impossible for us to go forward.”

Lindsay Lohan Fired From Porn Star Biopic ‘Inferno,’ Malin Akerman Steps In

21 November 2010 7:43 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Lindsay Lohan was set to star in the upcoming Linda Lovelace biopic, titled Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story, but after violating probation and continuing rehab, she had been fired. E! reported the story, with writer/director Matthew Wilder saying “we are withdrawing our offer from Lindsay Lohan.” Although there have been reports that the decision was mutual, 24 Frames confirms she was fired. Another source says “she wanted them to tone down a lot of the racy scenes. It wasn’t going to be good for her to play someone with substance issues when she is going through her own recovery.” So, who will replace the actress?

Deadline reports that “the producers love” Malin Akerman and she has been cast in the role. Lovelace, who starred in the infamous Deep Throat, became a leading figure in the anti-porn movement and died in a car crash in 2002. Akerman is certainly a less interesting choice than Lohan, »

Malin Akerman Loves Her Some Jennifer Aniston: “Guys…Nab Her!”

It’s not just gossip bloggers who can’t leave Jennifer Aniston alone; even co-stars can’t stay out of her business. Malin Akerman, best known for getting naked in Watchmen and wearing little in comedies like Couples Retreat and The Heartbreak Kid, has a lot to say about Jen after filming Wanderlust with her and Paul Rudd. “Guys, get out there!” she told the male gender via People, “Nab her! She is every guy’s dream!” Not that you need a Y chromosome to appreciate her glory. “Jennifer is one of my favorite people now. Not only is she an extraordinary actress, she is such a loving, genuine woman and fun. You want her to be your best friend. She’s amazing.” Are you done? “It’s funny, because I kind of expected her to be amazing. I would have been more surprised if she hadn’t been the great, »

First Trailer and Poster for the Farrelly Brothers' New Comedy Hall Pass

The first trailer and teaser poster for the Farrelly brothers' (Bobby and Peter) new movie, Hall Pass, are now online. Those wacky guys behind Dumb and Dumber, There's Something About Mary, and The Heartbreak Kid wrote (with Kevin Barnett) and directed this new comedy about a couple of horny married guys (Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis) who are granted a one week "hall pass" to cheat at will by their wives (Jenna Fisher and Christina Applegate). The problem? The wives neglected to mention that they also plan on engaging in extramarital activities during the week apart.

Hall Pass Trailer Starring Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis

5 November 2010 8:54 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Will you look at that... another comedy about sex without consequences! Of course, this one is more of a middle-aged sex comedy than a rom-com, and it is directed by The Farrelly Brothers. I was kind of expecting it to be more raunchy than what the trailer lets on though. Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis (30 Rock, Saturday Night Live) play married men who are losing the spark in their relationships. Their wives (Christina Applegate and Jenna Fischer) grant them a one-week "hall pass", to chase other women... mainly because they don't think their men can get any. This definitely seems reminiscent of one of the recurring plot threads from the fourth season of Curb Your Enthusiasm (and, incidentally, J.B. Smoove makes an appearance in this movie as well). Hall Pass was originally written as a spec script by Pete Jones, and then reworked by The Farrelly Brothers and Kevin Barnett »

'Hall Pass' Trailer: The Farrelly Bros. Return to Form?

Whatever happened to Peter and Bobby Farrelly? One minute, they're making 'Dumb and Dumber' and 'There's Something About Mary' and doing a pretty good job of defining a new generation of raunchy, gross-out comedy, and then 'Osmosis Jones' happens to them. And 'Shallow Hal.' And 'Fever Pitch.' And finally, 'The Heartbreak Kid,' which may not have been a nail in the coffin, but it was definitely a nice solid kick to their careers' shin.

Well, they've had a few years to lick to their wounds and now they've returned to the cinematic scene, bringing with them a trailer for their newest opus, 'Hall Pass.' It's a simple enough premise: two women give their bumbling husbands a week-long "hall pass" to pretend they're not married and do whatever, and presumably whomever, they want. Complications »

'Due Date' Review: On A Bumpy Road Trip with Zach Galifianakis and Robert Downey Jr.

5 November 2010 2:15 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Humiliation-based comedy has taken a curious trajectory over the past decade or so. The Farrelly Brothers' earlier films like 'Dumb & Dumber' and 'Kingpin' were goofy but earnest, yet it was the gauntlet of gags known as 'There's Something About Mary' that exploded at the box office and (at the risk of generalizing) re-ignited studio interest in the R-rated comedy.

From there, Ben Stiller found himself embarrassed once more in 'Meet the Parents', and again in 'Along Came Polly', and yet again in 'Meet the Fockers' before re-uniting with the Farrellys on their underwhelming remake of 'The Heartbreak Kid'. Stiller wasn't just the funny man, but rather the punching bag, and after that, it seemed that endearing characters enduring great awkwardness became less of a priority as an elaborate sense of cruelty took the forefront. Trailer and Poster for the Farrelly Brothers' 'Hall Pass'

4 November 2010 9:22 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Gimme a break, the number of trailers being released today is ridiculous. I gave a little rundown in my post for the new trailer for Just Go With It so if you need a refresher head over there, otherwise, here is the new trailer for Peter and Bobby Farrelly's new movie, Hall Pass. The film stars a whole fleet of folks including Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis, Jenna Fischer, Richard Jenkins, Christina Applegate, Stephen Merchant and Alyssa Milano and has already been set for a February 25 release from Warner Bros.

The film centers on Rick (Owen Wilson) and Fred (Jason Sudeikis), both are married, but both are in marriages that have them restless. In an effort to search for a solution, their wives (Jenna Fischer, Christina Applegate) grant them a "hall pass," giving them one week of freedom to do whatever they want...no questions asked.

The Heartbreak Kid

I have a certain nostalgic fondness for the original 1972 Elaine May-Neil Simon comedy, The Heartbreak Kid (available on DVD), which goes beyond the darkly hilarious film itself, because at the time of its making and release I was living with one of the stars, Cybill Shepherd. This warm feeling only increased with the publication of Cybill’s memoirs (Cybill Disobedience), in which there are numerous revelations—-to me, too—-about her various doings during our nine-year relationship (and, of course, before and after). It turns out that on The Heartbreak Kid, there were no extracurricular encounters, though things might have gone a… »
