Dateline: the day after tomorrow. Spectrum agents Captain Scarlet and Captain Black are assigned to investigate the source of unexplained extraterrestrial signals which have been detected emanating from Mars. They discover a strange and fantastic alien city but when their Bison Alien Terrain Vehicle is approached by a glowing green sphere, Black assumes that they are under attack and launches missiles which destroy the city. Miraculously, the city reforms and its alien occupants, the Mysterons, are disgusted by the violence of the Earthmen, pledging to crush their world. Black is apparently killed but Scarlet is returned to Earth as the Mysterons' instrument of destruction...

When Captain Black is linked to a mysterious explosion at a military research center, Scarlet and Blue are dispatched to New York to liaise with the FBI in their attempt to track down the former Spectrum agent. Black is spotted at the United Nations Building where Colonel White is addressing the UN delegates in an emergency meeting about the Mysteron threat. Believing that Black intends to assassinate the Colonel during his speech, Scarlet and Blue race to the UN to stop him, but Black's real target is the Russian Army chief General Zamatev. Once under Mysteron control, Zamatev provides the firepower to launch an attack on Spectrum's Skybase headquarters, while Black himself pursues an even more devastating agenda!

After a strange mysteron controlled aircraft is destroyed by the angels, a strange swarm of tiny green robots erupts from the wreckage and eats one of the angel's aircraft. Soon the same small robots infests skybase. It is soon realized the machines are not bent on destruction, but are following a far more devious plan. Captain Scarlet and Blue launch a daring plan to try and stop the machines and rescue trapped Skybase crew

Captain Scarlet and a team of Spectrum operatives go to Mars to check the reasons for the lack of contact with Elysium base. On approach they are shot down by a missile, apparently fired from the base. At the base they find all the staff dead from a strange series of injuries. Scarlet quickly realizes they are not alone on the planet. He needs to identify what killed the crewmen and neutralize the threat before his own team becomes victims

Spectrum scrambles as a strange craft enters Earth's atmosphere. Investigating the landed object reveals it is an escape pod carrying one survivor from the first manned Jupiter mission believed destroyed 15 years before. The survivor is Lieutenant Green's father. Green is overjoyed at the news, but others have doubts that he may be a Mysteron replicant. Scarlet has to decide the truth about the survivor and what the real aims of the Mysterons are

Spectrum is pleased with the launch of a new satellite being put into orbit that will detect Mysteron energy deep in space. Suddenly the crew loses control of the ship and a ransom demand is sent, if not paid the craft will be crash landed on Washington DC. Scarlet and the rest of Spectrum are puzzled, they seem to be facing a classic Mysteron gambit, but why is there a demand for ransom.

The designer of the devastating Thunder Pulse compression bomb is presumed killed and replaced by the Mysterons. Spectrum turn to his twin brother who is a convicted criminal in the hope he can make some sort of mental link and stop whatever plan the Mysterons are trying to execute.
