‘Dunkirk’: Why Christopher Nolan’s War Epic Is a Certain Oscar Contender

Christopher Nolan and the Oscars have a love-hate relationship. He’s been nominated for only three Oscars, two for Original Screenplay: “Memento” in 2000 and big-scale epic “Inception” in 2010. That year, he was also nominated as a producer of “Inception,” which followed the surprising omission of  “The Dark Knight” for Best Picture contention in 2009. That pushed the Academy to change its rules to allow more Best Picture slots, which might encourage more people around the world to watch the Oscars.

Newswire: Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese reuniting for true-crime movie

16 July 2017 5:40 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Now that he has his Oscar, Leonardo DiCaprio can start making fun movies that are just excuses to hang out with his pals. Case in point, Variety is reporting that DiCaprio will soon be reuniting with his old friend Marty—a.k.a. acclaimed director Martin Scorsese—for an adaptation of true-crime thriller Killers Of The Flower Moon: The Osage Murders And The Birth Of The FBI. Of course, as hinted by the title, this doesn’t sound like a particularly fun movie, but at least Leo and Marty will be able to talk about how much they enjoyed making The Departed, Shutter Island, and The Wolf Of Wall Street together.

The book is set in the 1920s, and it’s about a series of murders in Oklahoma targeting members of the Osage nation who recently discovered oil underneath their land. The mystery was one of the then-nascent FBI »

Todd McFarlane won't let the Spawn reboot move forward unless he can "write, produce, direct, non-negotiable"....

While we've still got the TV series to keep us warm at night (it holds up pretty well) many fans justifiably feel like they've been denied the Spawn movie they deserve, and creator Todd McFarlane wants them all to know that he definitely hasn't given up on that long-in-gestation reboot film.

Gianni Nunnari’s Hollywood Gang have announced they are developing an adaptation of John Wukovits’ Hell From The Heavens: The Epic Story Of The USS Laffey And World War II’s Greatest Kamikaze Attack.

Rosalind Ross will write the adaptation under the working title of Kamikaze.

On April 16, 1945, the crewmen of the destroyer USS Laffey withstood an unrelenting kamikaze attack. After 80 minutes, 22 continuous air attacks and four direct bomb hits, six Japanese fighter planes crashed into the ship, setting the destroyer ablaze. The ship’s captain Frederick Julian Becton refused to give up and he and his crew fought on and ultimately won the day, earning the Laffey the name ‘The Ship That Would Not Die.’

Director Adam Wingard has taken some heat for his adaptation of “Death Note,” which takes the Japanese manga and transports the story to the United States. The filmmaker has defended his movie, saying it’s a “fresh story,” and the approach is not unlike Martin Scorsese reconfiguring his remake of “The Departed” into a Boston-set story. Now, in an interview with IGN, Wingard reveals the difficulty he had in trying to bring the narrative stateside, and it resulted in making changes to the characters.

Midway Oscars Forecast: Studios Aim for Gold With Spectacle and Zeitgeist

30 June 2017 12:10 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

If the upcoming slate of indie Oscar hopefuls promises to be packed with the kind of risky mid-budgeted visions corporate cultures aren’t often eager to back, then the major studios are teeing up exactly what they’re capable of when they throw money at the right talent. Bold genre filmmaking and superhero yarns with actual meat on their bones dot the landscape, while a few of-the-moment dramas and comedies aim to get their licks in as well.

Twentieth Century Fox has a trio of prestige plays in store. For the holidays, Hugh Jackman stars as P.T. Barnum in Michael Gracey’s “The Greatest Showman,” though that could register more as a family film than an awards juggernaut. Meanwhile, Kenneth Branagh aims to dust off an Agatha Christie classic with the star-studded “Murder on the Orient Express.” But if ever there was a project that, sight unseen, felt destined for gold baubles, it »

Cannes Film Review: ‘The Merciless’

9 June 2017 3:26 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Armed to the hilt with double-, triple- and quadruple-crossings between gangsters, moles and cops, “The Merciless” tries to be the whole “Infernal Affairs” trilogy rolled into one movie. A largely generic crime thriller in which a ruthless gangster and his protege fight for dominance in and out of prison, the third film by South Korean director Byung Sung-hyun barrels forth with riotous energy, but two-thirds into the picture, the switcheroos get so ridiculous one eventually stops caring about any character. This is a shame, as the two leads, Sul Kang-gul and Yim Si-wan, are flamboyantly compelling.

Still, the stylized production and stomach-churning violence are tailor-made for Asian genre fans, making the film an easy sell abroad. Although a controversy surrounding the helmer’s provocative tweets has hurt domestic box office, the movie has already presold to more than 110 territories worldwide.
