One of the forces behind always-controversial filmmaker Spike Lee’s Americanized remake of Oldboy is producer Roy Lee: the man partly responsible for the onslaught of Holllywood reworkings of famous Japanese horror titles (see: The Ring, The Grudge, Dark Water, The Eye, Shutter, etc.) that have hit theaters over the past decade.
Roy Lee sat down with several movie news bloggers and journalists during a recent set visit to the currently-shooting thriller, 7500, and offered updates on some of his upcoming projects – including, information about the production timeline and ending of (Spike) Lee’s Oldboy.
Oldboy is the next project on Lee’s to-do list and the producer says that pre-production is expected to get going by January 2012, with principal photography set to commence two months later. He also clarified that the project will not be based in any form ...

It only took four years, but it looks like the Hollywood machine is moving forward with a remake to 2007's Them . Variety reports David Alcalde has been tapped to direct for StudioCanal. His background includes a few short films and a number of commercials. The original was helmed by David Moreau and Xavier Palud. Both went on to give us Lionsgate redo of The Eye . During interviews for that film, Moreau and Palud told Shock that a Them was being discussed. Part home invasion film and part survival horror, Them concerned a couple who were preyed upon by unknown attackers wearing hoodies. It was released here in the U.S. by Dark Sky Films. »

[1] I walked out of an early Toronto International Film Festival press screening 10 days ago ranting and raving about Frédéric Jardin's incredible French contained action thriller Sleepless Night. I posted an enthusiastic review [2] on September 12th calling it "one of the best and tightest written action thrillers I've seen in the past few years" and predicted that some lucky Hollywood studio would be developing a big budget American remake within the week. I was a little off in my prediction timeline, but ten days later The Hollywood Reporter [3] has learned that Warner Bros and Roy Lee will be producing the English-language adaptation. Lee is probably best known as the producer of some of the hotter Asian-to-American remakes of the last decade, include The Ring series, The Departed, The Grudge series, The Eye, as well as How to Train Your Dragon and Abduction. Lee has a long list of projects in »

Rock n' roll and Hollywood will soon collide as Keith Richard's autobiography "Life" is reportedly being turned into a feature film. Although Richards claims he isn't in a huge rush to get this project moving, fans and industry buffs can't help but speculate who will play the legendary guitarist of The Rolling Stones. While a few names have been dropped, there is no clear answer to who will take on the challenge of portraying the man once described by journalist Nick Kent as "mad, bad, and dangerous to know."
The role will require great versatility, as the actor will have to portray Richards through the many tumultuous stages of his life, including years spent struggling with drug abuse. While there is plenty of room for opinion and debate over who could capture the notoriety of Keith Richards on the big screen, we thought of a few »

The line-up for the 2011 Venice Film Festival was unveiled a little earlier today and this year’s edition looks particularly stacked on the English-language side of things with a large number of dramatic outputs from the U.K. and U.S.
Dozens and dozens of high-intrigue fare are set to be premiering over the two week event which kicks off proceedings on August 31st with the George Clooney directed political thriller The Ides of March as an in-competition film. A trailer was released last night and you can see it Here.
The other big headliners include;
Working Title’s attempt to bring the classic John Le Carre novel Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy to the big screen for the first time (though there was an amazing 70′s t.v. series with Alec Guinness that this film will need to go to some quality to beat) has been on our radar every »

I have a theory regarding the 2010 film Elektra Luxx, specifically a theory as to how it exists and why so many big-name stars agreed to be in it. Years ago, Elektra Luxx writer/director Sebastian Gutierrez must have walked in on a huge Hollywood drug and sex orgy. In exchange for his silence, they agreed to be in his movies. How else would the screenwriter of the American horror remake The Eye end up with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Carla Gugino, and Timothy Olyphant in leading roles? (I am still baffled by Julianne Moore's cameo as the Virgin Mary.) Elektra Luxx is a mess both as a movie and as an interesting story. At points, Gutierrez reminds me of a lesser Kevin Smith without the interesting characters or snappy dialogue.

America has long held a fascination with serial killers, and now it looks like France is taking a turn with Blind Man, which Xavier Palud (Ils [Them], The Eye) is set to direct for Luc Besson's EuropaCorp, which also holds French distribution and international sales rights.
According to Variety Palud (pictured right) will be directing Lambert Wilson (Sahara, Of Gods and Men) and Jacques Gamblin (The First Day of the Rest of Your Life, Safe Conduct), both of whom are attached to star in the film, which was scripted by writer-director Eric Besnard (Ca$h) from an original idea by Besson.
Palud's third feature, which goes into production in early September in Paris, has Gamblin as a solitary cop investigating a cold case. He suspects that a blind man (Wilson) is the killer, sparking a battle of wits.
We're not sure if this one is more thriller or horror, but »

While some serial killer thrillers end up like Se7en, others become Blitz; this is why it's so incredibly difficult to decide whether or not to cover each announced serial killer flick. Worse comes to worse we can always abandon coverage, like we did with Lionsgate UK's Blitz, which ended up an action thriller instead of something darker (as promised). Lambert Wilson and Jacques Gamblin are attached to star in EuropaCorp thriller The Blind Man, with The Eye/Them director Xavier Palud at the helm. Scripted by writer-director Eric Besnard (Ca$h) from an original idea by Luc Besson, Man is a cat-and-mouse serial killer thriller that goes into production early September in Paris. Palud's third feature has "Gamblin as a solitary cop investigating a cold case. He suspects that a blind man (Wilson) is the killer, sparking a battle of wits." »

A Mexican-born actress accused of entering a sham marriage to remain in the United States is scheduled to be sentenced Monday after admitting she lied during an immigration proceeding. She and her husband are expected to avoid prison. The actress, Fernanda Romero, has had bit roles in Us films such as "Drag Me To Hell" and "The Eye," but is perhaps best known for appearing in the Mexican soap opera "Eternamente Tuya." Several former acquaintances testified against the pair at a trial last summer, but the couple have maintained they love each other. Federal prosecutors presented evidence that the couple didn't live together as they stated on immigration forms, and essentially lived separate lives. »

After last appearing on the big screen at the end of 2010 in a not so sparkling role in Little Fockers, Jessica Alba is now back playing the lead in new movie An Invisible Sign, the story of a math teacher obsessed with numbers and a new trailer has just arrived courtesy of The Playlist.
Looking refreshingly geeky with ponytails and no make-up on, Jessica plays Mona, a woman with a weird fixation with numbers developed as a child after her beloved mathematician father started showing signs of mental illness. Now grown up and unemployed, Mona is evicted, but receives a call from her ex elementary school principal who offers her a job as the new math teacher. At work, she proves herself to be quite an unconventional educator, and also falls for a colleague, battles her compulsive obsession and ends up pushing herself out of her comfort zone and into a new world. »

Opens: April 1st 2011
Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga, Jeffrey Wright
Director: Duncan Jones
Summary: A decorated soldier discovers he's part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train. The experiment is a program that enables him to re-live another man's identity in the last eight minutes of his life which he must do repeatedly to find the truth.
Analysis: Two years ago British filmmaker Duncan Jones delivered his indie debut feature "Moon", a little seen but critically acclaimed sci-fi tale that was essentially Sam Rockwell acting alone or against himself. It was fresh, innovative, somber and overall heralded the arrival of a director to watch out for. After failing to secure funding for his next project, Jones quickly hopped onto the helm of this high-concept action/time travel blockbuster.
Naturally came the calls of Jones being a sell out, after all the »

Burnt out from the Oscar-Nominated movies? Looking for a unique film experience that will spark conversation? BuzzFocus caught up with director and writer Sebastian Gutierrez (The Eye, Gothika, Snakes on a Plane) who was excited to talk about his latest film, Elektra Luxx, a day in the life of its title character (Carla Cugino, Sin City) who is trying to reinvent herself but her surreal life makes that a difficult task.
Formerly a porn starlet, Elektra hopes to make it in the straight world while preparing for motherhood. The father of her child, Nick Chapel passed away so she uses her skills of her past trade to become a sex-education instructor at the local community center. A flight attendant Cora (Mary Shelton, Deathproof) who nearly had an affair with her late husband approaches her with lyrics from Nick’s unreleased record, completely dedicated to Elektra, and in exchange she has to seduce Cora’s fiancée. »
