"Zack and Miri Make a Porno" - Our Interview with Elizabeth Banks

10 Questions with 'Zack and Miri' star Elizabeth Banks Being a pistol allows character actress Elizabeth Banks to sit in a noisy Toronto hotel suite and not let the chaos upset her. As readily explained by the 34-year-old blonde, she does not require pampering. In fact, her loud laughter and strong presence soon dominate the room. Best known for her supporting roles in the "Spider-Man" movies and as Steve Carell's crazy date in "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," Banks enjoys co-lead status in director Kevin Smith's latest comedy "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" as well as Oliver Stone's President George W. The Wait for 'Fanboys' Continues

27 October 2008 6:43 PM, PDT | | See recent Comicmix news »

The Weinstein Company has, according to Slash Film, moved Fanboys from November to open February 6, 2009, another delay. The studio  picked up Fanboy for release some time back and the utterly charming tale of friends trying to get their dying friend to see The Phantom Menace has been hung up ever since.

Clearly they have little faith in the film given it will now open opposite Push, Pink Panther 2, and the Jennifer Aniston’s He’s Just Not That Into You.

When they picked up the movie, it was essentially complete and ready for release but instead, the Weinsteins wanted to tinker with it and the creators and fans were horrified at the notion that the charm might be replaced with something different. They decided to reedit the film their way then test screen both versions before deciding which one to release.

Weinstein decided the cancer subplot was too downbeat and »

"Zack and Miri" don't make a porno in Utah's Megaplex

27 October 2008 1:39 PM, PDT | | See recent news »

In another baffling entertainment predicament, the New York Post has put up an article stating that Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller's Megaplex Theatres has refused to book Kevin Smith's "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" which The Weinstein Company is distributing. The Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks adult comedy was apparently too raunchy for its more conservative, religious viewers. However, they are showing the extremely violent "Saw V" to viewers, no worries there. Ok, so let's get this straight - a comedy with sexual content and humor has absolutely no part in a religious person's life but a thriller spewing blood out like a broken faucet fits the bill perfectly? Hey it's cool right? Maybe to some people out there with a bizarre take on religion, this blood flow makes more sense than a comedy turning out a few laughs from someone who has had an utterly miserable day and perhaps, »

Blood's In, Porn's Out In Utah

Harvey Weinstein won't be seeing his favorite "porno" in Salt Lake City. Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller's Megaplex Theatres refused to book the Weinstein Company's new R-rated comedy "Zack and Miri Make a Porno," starring Seth Rogan and Elizabeth Banks, saying it's too raunchy for religious, conservative audiences. "We feel it's very close to an Nc-17 with its graphic nudity and graphic sex," the chain's Cal Gunderson told us. Asked why Megaplex has no problem showing the R-rated, ultra-violent "Saw V," which shows a man »

Noah Emmerich makes a terrific sidekick. He has played Jim Carrey's devious cohort (The Truman Show), Jim Caviezel's understanding best friend (Frequency), and Kurt Russell's kindhearted assistant (Miracle). But in Pride and Glory, opening next week, Emmerich is nobody's buddy. In the film's tight-knit family of New York City cops — with the patriarch played by Oscar winner Jon Voight, his son-in-law by Colin Farrell, and his youngest son by Edward Norton — Emmerich is Francis Jr., the eldest son, caught in a web of police corruption. It's a plum role, and even Emmerich couldn't believe it when writer-director Gavin O'Connor offered it to him, despite his having appeared in both of the filmmaker's previous movies, Tumbleweeds and Miracle. "I read the script and was like, 'Oh my God, this is a starring role,'" Emmerich recalls. "I asked him, 'Are you sure you want me for this?' »

Movie Marriages: Four Actor-Director Duos Who Are Joined at the Hip

By Matt Singer

If it feels like Russell Crowe is in every movie Ridley Scott directs these days, that's because he is. After winning a Best Actor Oscar for "Gladiator" in 2000, Crowe reeled off three Scott pictures in three years: 2006's "A Good Year," 2007's "American Gangster" and this year's "Body of Lies." And the two are already at it again: Scott recently announced that "Nottingham," his long-stalled adaptation of the Robin Hood legend, will move forward with Crowe taking on both roles of the legendary archer and the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Most of the greatest directors in history have important collaborations with actors who come to be synonymous with their work. Though each partner has had careers apart from one another, they come to represent a single creative entity in our minds: when we imagine a John Ford movie, we think of John Wayne in Monument Valley; when you say Toshiro Mifune, »

Holly Bario, Mark Sourian to head DreamWorks

16 October 2008 3:00 PM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

As the new, post-Paramount DreamWorks continues to come into focus, Holly Bario and Mark Sourian have been named co-presidents of production.

Bario joined Dw at the beginning of the year after serving as an executive vp production at Universal; Sourian has been at Dw since 1997. The pair will step into the post vacated by former Dw exec Adam Goodman, who is remaining at Paramount as a production president, where, among other duties, he will oversee the Dw-developed projects that Paramount will now take over.

Although Dw partners Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider are reconstituting DreamWorks as a new company, with funding from India's Reliance Big Entertainment and a seven-year worldwide distribution pact with Universal, Bario and Sourian won't be starting the development process from scratch. As part of the Par/Dw separation agreement, Dw is taking over development of at least 17 projects that Par has the option to become involved »

Russell Crowe Too Funny for Warner Bros.

Rosemarie DeWitt Actor Rachel Getting Married As the title character in Jonathan Demme's family drama, Rosemarie DeWitt steps effortlessly into one famous family: Her parents are played by Debra Winger and Bill Irwin and her sister by Anne Hathaway. But the Mad Men actor (DeWitt played Don Draper's mistress) and stage veteran (she was part of the Obie Award-winning cast of Craig Lucas' Small Tragedy) more than holds her own against such powerhouses, bringing a sweet vulnerability to a role that could have faded into the background. "I did worry at times about being the nicest character and coming off boring," she says. "But there was so much to work with to bring Rachel to life." DeWitt's first big-screen appearance was in a small part in the film Cinderella Man, which told the story of boxer Jim Braddock — who happens to be her real-life grandfather. But she didn't land the gig through nepotism. »

'Chihuahua' has paws on the prize

2 October 2008 1:00 PM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

It's looking like a dog of a weekend at the boxoffice.

Disney's dog, to be exact, as the Burbank studio unspools its PG comedy "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" amid expectations that the live-action-with-talking-dogs laugher could fetch up to $30 million during its opening frame. The film's canines are voiced by Drew Barrymore, Jamie Lee Curtis, Andy Garcia and George Lopez.

Family patrons form the target audience, but Disney executives hope the young-at-heart crowd also will come along for the four-legged romp.

"In all the screenings we've done, we have gotten nothing but wonderful marks from all the audiences who were on hand," Disney distribution president Chuck Viane said. "So there's no question that this is a commercial, family film, but I believe we can expand on that audience."

With "Chihuahua" sure to bow at No. 1, last weekend's top dog -- DreamWorks/Paramount's "Eagle Eye," which proved anything but a boxoffice beagle -- could grab second place, »

Nick And Norah's Infinite Playlist

Do you believe in love at first listen? Early in Nick And Norah's Infinite Playlist, an adaptation of the popular young adult novel by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, high school senior Kat Dennings (best known as Catherine Keener's daughter in The 40-Year-Old Virgin) watches as her spoiled semi-friend Alexis Dziena throws away the latest mix CD from her ex-boyfriend. Dennings fishes the disc, titled Road To Closure Vol. 12, out of the trash. It's not the first time she's picked up one of the gifts Dziena's discarded and she's finding herself a little bit smitten with their compiler. Anyone who doesn't see that as a pretty solid foundation on which to build a relationship might have trouble with the movie, a film in love with unpopular pop music, the possibilities of New York after midnight, and the fumbling first gestures of new romance. It seems like so long ago that I reviewed the Blu-ray version but I keep to my high marks and I actually found the film more enjoyable at home and was able to find the second half slightly more entertaining as is usually the case when I find something relatively dumb in theaters, dumb is just easier to swallow at home and the climax of Iron Man, come on, let's face it, is pretty dumb. The Blu-ray comes with a decent handful of special features, most of which can also be found on the 2-Disc DVD. I will warn you of one thing though, I have heard folks have been having trouble with their Blu-ray review copies »

A look at "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" - The Toronto International Film Festival Review

25 September 2008 7:58 AM, PDT | | See recent news »

The impending collision between longtime Kevin Smith fans; those who can recite lines of dialogue from his 1994 debut comedy "Clerks;" and Seth Rogen fanatics, moviegoers convinced "Knocked Up" qualifies as classic comedy; will leave "Zack and Miri Make a Porno" laughing at bits but craving more. "Zack and Miri," the latest comedy from Smith and his eighth film overall, easily qualifies as his biggest film to date thanks to popular co-stars Rogen ("Pineapple Express") and Elizabeth Banks ("The 40 Year Old Virgin"). Sadly, the clever, raunchy dialogue and hysterical gross-out gags grind to a halt during Smith's second-half attempts at heartache and romance. When a movie flashes moments of comedy perfection, it's disappointing when the result is a notch above satisfactory. »

Blu-ray Review: Universal Blu-ray Action Starter Pack

Universal appears to have established waves of releasing the same titles they started releasing on HD DVD before the format went under and the first wave is what they are considering their Blu-ray Action Starter Pack. This collection, whose titles can also be purchased individually, contains the Blu-ray editions of Miami Vice, End of Days and U-571. These are three titles I am sure all of you recognize, but I am not entirely sure they are three titles anyone really recognizes as good. However, these releases show promise for future Bd releases out of Universal, which is a good thing. First off, the best of the bunch is easily Michael Mann's highly flawed Miami Vice. This is a film that upset me more than you can possibly imagine. Mann looked like he had the perfect cast and "Miami Vice" was his baby. I actually watched this one »
