WGA-nommed writers script lively debates

5 February 2006 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

A few nights before the laurels were handed out, the tone of the conversation among seven Writers Guild Award nominees was much in keeping with the spirit of their respective films. It was mostly serious stuff, punctuated by comic relief from Judd Apatow, writer-director of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, during the WGA West's annual Beyond Words panel session, presented by The Hollywood Reporter at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills. "The tagline 'gay cowboy movie' really annoyed us," said Brokeback Mountain co-screenwriter and producer Diana Ossana, discussing the nearly 10-year campaign to make a movie out of Annie Proulx's short story. Some of her own friends and family in places other than "the coasts" have had a hard time coming to grips with the homosexual love story at the center of Brokeback, she said. "I finally had to say to them, It's just a movie. What do you think is going to happen to you if you see it?" she said. "It hasn't been easy. Trust me." »
