[First Look] Tattooed Tom Hardy In ‘Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’

22 December 2010 7:54 PM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

After delivering one of the best films of the decade with Let The Right One In, I’ve been highly anticipating the English-language debut for director Tomas Alfredson. After Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck impressed with The Lives of Others, his debut over here, The Tourist, didn’t go over so well. It seems as if Alfredson is taking more serious approach, with an excellent cast, so my faith continues.

Based on John Le Carre‘s spy thriller, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy stars Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ciaran Hinds, Mark Strong, Svetlana Khodchenko, Toby Jones, John Hurt, Stephen Graham and Kathy Burke.

The film has been shooting since late September and JustJared (via CinemaBlend) has captured our first look at a tattooed Tom Hardy. It is great to see the star rise after his excellent turn in Bronson, then his popularity skyrocket with Christopher Nolan‘s Inception. »

The Toronto Film Festival’s Essential 100 Movies

22 December 2010 11:00 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

It seems like only yesterday that the American Film Institute released their 100 Years...100 Movies [1] list. Actually though, it was over 10 years ago when we first got our look at that "definitive" list of the 100 best American movies. They then did a ten year anniversary of it in 2007 with only minor adjustments and both years Citizen Kane held the number one place as the best American movie. Of course, the problem with those lists is that they only list American films. While Hollywood might be considered the epicenter of film, the art form itself spans the globe, way beyond American borders. That's why the Toronto International Film Festival came up with their Essential 100 movies. Created by merging lists made by Toronto Film Festival supporters along with another made by their programmers, these are supposed to be the 100 essential movies every cinephile must see. And it starts off with a bang as Citizen Kane has been toppled. »

New Video: 'The Tourist' stars Johnny & Angelina Gush Over Golden Globe Noms

14 December 2010 3:39 PM, PST | TheInsider.com | See recent The Insider news »

Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie were in Berlin, Germany, promoting 'The Tourist' on Tuesday when they heard the good news that their film and both their performances are nominated for this year's Golden Globe Awards. "It's always very sweet and very nice to be acknowledged for your work," said Johnny, who is nominated for Best Actor – Comedy or Musical for his performance in 'The Tourist' alongside his performance in 'Alice in Wonderland.' "I certainly didn't expect two nominations in the same category, but if that's what they saw, I guess that's what they saw. I'm very touched." Angelina is nominated for Best Actor – Comedy or Musical for her performance in 'The Tourist,' and she commented, "You work hard at something and you do a film that you love and you never know how it will be responded to, and it's been nice that audiences have enjoyed it and seen it, »

The Tourist Review

The Tourist Directed by: Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck Written by: Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, Christopher McQuarrie, and Julian Fellowes (screenplay), Jerome Salle (Anthony Zimmer) Starring: Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp , Paul Bettany, Timothy Dalton 2010 has been a year glutted with mediocre spy fare. The Tourist joins the dubious ranks of Red, Knight and Day, and Killers — and that it might be the best of the lot isn’t saying much. Anchored by arguably the strongest cast, including stars Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, he Tourist moves at a more relaxed pace than its blockbuster brethren. Then again, Red was plenty slow, but still wound up nigh incomprehensible. I understood The Tourist, which is a compliment, unfortunately. The Venetian caper keeps its audience in the loop, with a story thankfully straightforward enough to follow. Jolie plays Elise Clifton-Ward, the squeeze of a master criminal who's lifted two billion pounds from a no-nonsense »

Harry Potter Passes $250m Milestone; Natalie Portman's Black Swan Incredible $36,726 Average

Christina Aguilera, Burlesque Directed by veteran Michael Apted, perhaps best known for the "Up" documentaries (21, 28 Up, 35 Up, etc.), Fox's The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader had an underwhelming debut in the Us/Canada this past weekend, taking in a mere $24m according to actuals found at Box Office Mojo. Considering that this latest Chronicles of Narnia cost a reported $155m, that's bad news indeed for distributor 20th Century Fox. Targeting Christians to come see a Bible-inspired movie didn't pay off this time around. Debuting at no. 2 was the $100-budgeted The Tourist, starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, and directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, whose spy drama The Lives of Others received the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 2007. The widely panned The Tourist brought in a disappointing $16.47m — quite a bit less than the $20m some had predicted. Sony Pictures Classics is [...] »

“This Week In Movies” – ‘The Tourist,’ ‘Chronicles Of Narnia,’ ‘The Fighter’

By Pete Hammond

HollywoodNews.com: Jolie. Depp. Narnia. Brand names all that led the pre-holiday boxoffice with a whimper , not a bang this weekend. So what’s the deal with “The Tourist?” I mean Jolie is arguably the biggest female box office star in the world right now, particularly in something as commercial as this light thriller set in Paris and Venice. Depp had a billion dollar grosser in his most recent, “Alice In Wonderland” earlier this year. Producer Graham King won a Best Picture Oscar for the hit “The Departed.” It marks the Hollywood major studio debut of director Florian Henckel VonDonnersmarck who won an Oscar for his critically acclaimed Foreign Language film winner, “The Lives Of Others” and was co-written by him with Oscar winning screenwriters Julian Fellowes (“Gosford Park”) and Christopher Quarrie (“The Usual Suspects”). The reviews though were universally dismal, only 7% positive among top critics at Rotten Tomatoes and 21% fresh overall. »

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader Tops Slow Box Office Weekend

13 December 2010 7:36 AM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Angelina, Aslan and Johnny were no match for blizzards, holiday shopping and parties this weekend as the much-anticipated releases of Sony's The Tourist and Fox's The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader both opened below expectations at the North American box office. While the top ten was up 10.5% from last weekend, it was pretty much flat with last year at this time.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the third of C.S. Lewis' Narnia novels to be adapted for the big screen (following 2005's Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe and 2008's Prince Caspian), encountered rough sailing but still managed to land in the top spot with an estimated $24.5 million from 3,555 screens. The opening for the $150 million Fox/Walden Media co-production (Disney opted out after the second film) was less than half of Caspian.s debut in May 2008, which itself was down from the opening of the 2005 original. »

Audiences leave Narnia in chronicle pain and hop off The Tourist trail

13 December 2010 4:42 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Voyage of the Dawn Treader has failed to come a long way and the Depp/Jolie/von Donnersmarck team are no dream

That blasted Narnia franchise just won't die. Walden Media's third episode, Voyage of the Dawn Treader, is now being handled by Fox (Disney released the first two) and flattered to deceive when it opened at number one over the weekend. This was a puny session at the box office so Narnia's $24.5m (£15.6m) three-day gross is nothing to write home about and fell way below what Fox top brass were looking for to justify the franchise relaunch.

It all started so well back in 2005 when The Chronicles of Narnia finished on more than $740m worldwide. The 2008 sequel Prince Caspian grossed a lot less – around $420m worldwide – and when producers Walden Media took the property to Fox, the studio thought it had sniffed a winner. Well an opening weekend »

[Movie Review] The Tourist

12 December 2010 11:28 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

It may have seemed like a can’t-miss proposition to put two of the most attractive A-list stars in the world together in a romantic thriller. Is there a more consistent performer in the world today than Johnny Depp? Is there a more glamorous leading lady than Angelina Jolie? This was an easy sell by the advertisers. Sadly, the “can’t miss” pairing is missing any trace of on-screen chemistry. If the intention here was to make a classic pairing like Bogie & Bacall or Tracey & Hepburn or Fred & Ginger, the idea fails because the parts of the pair are greater than the whole.

Director Florian Henckel Von Donnersmarck (The Lives of Others) co-wrote this remake of Anthony Zimmer along with Julian Fellows (Gosford Park) and Christopher McQuarrie. The original film was a box office disappointment, which makes it an odd choice for a remake. The basic Hitchcockian plot of an unsuspecting, »

The Tourist – review

11 December 2010 4:07 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A Hitchcockian comedy-thriller co-scripted by the German director of The Lives of Others, the American author of The Usual Suspects and the Englishman who wrote Gosford Park, all three of them Oscar-winners, seemed like something to look forward to. Especially for someone like myself who believes that no film set on a train or in Venice can be wholly bad. But this glossy affair, in which Angelina Jolie (British mystery woman) meets Johnny Depp (American maths teacher) on a train from Paris to Venice, then leads him on a merry dance around the canals of La Serenissima chased by Scotland Yard and international villains, nearly pulls off the trick.

Natalie Portman-Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan Once Again Weekend's Box-Office Success Story

Natalie Portman does the black dance in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan Directed by veteran Michael Apted, Fox's The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader opened in North America to mostly negative reviews and tepid box office on Friday, Dec. 10, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. This third installment in the Chronicles of Narnia series brought in an estimated $8.2m at 3,555 locations, averaging a highly disappointing $2,307 per theater in spite of 3D surcharges. Debuting at no. 2 with $6.1m, The Tourist, starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, and directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck — whose The Lives of Others won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 2007 — was another box-office disappointment. Review: The Tourist

11 December 2010 8:30 AM, PST | Slackerwood | See recent Slackerwood news »

Academy award winner writer/director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (The Lives of Others) takes the helm of the suspenseful drama The Tourist as it sails through from a cafe in Paris to the canals of Venice. Joined by seasoned writers Christopher McQuarrie (Valkyrie, The Usual Suspects) and Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park, Vanity Fair),  Donnersmarck would at first glance appear to be making an homage to Stanley Donen's classic espionage thriller Charade, which starred Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. However, The Tourist is actually a remake of French writer/director Jerome Salle's 2005 crime thriller Anthony Zimmer, which starred French film star Sophie Marceau.

The Tourist centers around Frank (Johnny Depp), a math teacher from Wisconsin who is traveling through Europe. What appears to be a chance encounter on a train with a mysterious beautiful woman is actually no mistake. Elise (Angelina Jolie) deliberately picks him out to throw police off »

Film Review: ‘The Tourist’ Twists Predictably, Lacks Chemistry Between Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp

10 December 2010 2:52 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Though you probably don’t know his name, Christopher McQuarrie’s involvement might sell you on paying to see “The Tourist” even more than “A”-list stars Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. After all, McQuarrie is the writer behind 1995’s Oscar-winning magnum opus by the name of “The Usual Suspects”.

Rating: 1.5/5.0

While these two films both embarked on the pursuit of conning you into one belief and then twisting you into another, “The Usual Suspects” masterfully succeeds in every fiber of its being while “The Tourist” can’t even play ball in the same league. And to even consider “The Tourist” as Hitchcockian would be a crime of blockbuster proportions bestowed upon the true man of mystery.

Though McQuarrie’s words might be found somewhere in this Angelina Jolie model fest, the ink from its two other writers (Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck and Julian Fellowes) clearly snuffs away McQuarrie’s natural skill. »

The Tourist Reviews: "Retro," "Ludicrous Fairy Tale," Jolie "Sexy As Hell"

10 December 2010 11:18 AM, PST | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

The Tourist is one of the oddest star vehicles to come out of the Hollywood dream factory in some time. It's determinedly retro, and as directed by The Lives of Others' Florian Henckel Von Donnersmarck--in a bid for big-studio acceptance--it's sincere in a way that few American directors would have managed. It's not hip at all. Von Donnersmarck is trying to make an old Hollywood fantasy surrounding two gorgeous movie stars. I can't imagine any men going to see this movie, which mainly offers romantic escape. The reviews are execrable: The Tomatometer is 17% rotten. Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie know exactly what they are doing. Set in Paris, on a speeding train, and Venice, the movie is a guilty pleasure. Jolie has never been »

[Review] The Tourist

10 December 2010 8:29 AM, PST | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Is Angelina Jolie the closest thing we have to Audrey Hepburn? Not exactly, and Johnny Depp is not quite Cary Grant, but they have a strangely watchable non-chemistry in The Tourist, the latest romantic-comedy-action movie to borrow the formula of the great Charade. Top-notch production values, beautifully costumed Hollywood movie stars, a plot promising mischief, seduction and romance. So why did this movie trip on itself and fall flat on its face?

While at best uneven in tone and quality, The Tourist offers Depp as something other than a Disney pirate or cartoon character, and while Jolie doesn’t physically kick any ass, you still believe she could if she wanted. Still, this is the kind of movie Hollywood used to knock out of the park – star wattage, romantic European scenery, deadly intrigue. The Tourist plays it all way too safe, and the audience is left wondering what the hell happened. »
