Storyline

Vahé, Sahak, and Toros run a bonneteau game on the streets of Paris. They're Lebanese French of Armenian descent. Vahé also works with his father, a cloth merchant, and is in love with Lu Ann, Chinese French, who's broken off their affair. Vahé wants to make things right: with Lu Ann, with his father's business, and with Yuen, Lu Ann's younger brother, who's on the edge of delinquency and owes money to the gang who arranged his passage from China. Vahé tries to be like a father to Yuen, teaching him a work ethic. When Yuen impetuosity puts his own life in jeopardy, Vahé tries to save him. Will Vahé's impulses and hopes die on the streets of Paris? Written by <jhailey@hotmail.com>

Violence among Armenians and Chinese in French garment district
9 June 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Gamblers" has us follow the lives of three Armenians and the Chinese they associate with in the garment district of Paris. It is an engaging film, but with some brief lapses in which the story either flags, diverts needlessly, or leaves too much out.

The movie is rather unpolished, like the people and life it portrays. The key players are rough and violent. The story jumps, has unexpected moments of violence, and some shaky camera work. The violence is far beyond what is to be expected in the situations and difficulties that the characters find themselves in. Revenge and frustration as well as anger are what motivate it. The degree of patience is very low, and so is a plan for the future or an ethic that might obviate the behavior we are seeing. Some key people in this film, in short, react to the mean streets by behaving worse than animals, not always, but in key situations.

The acting is very good. There is a quite young Chinese boy (maybe 14) (Teng Fai Xiang) in debt to those who brought him to France. He is disillusioned with the sweat shop slavery of his girl friend. An Armenian (Simon Abkarian) who runs a card racket on the streets is friendly with this girl's boss. The boy's sister has an off-again, on-again relationship with a gambling game associate (Pascal Elbe) of Abkarian. Elbe looks out for the boy, upon whom hinges the story's twists and tragedies. Elbe is disillusioned with his dad's fabric business which is going downhill. There is a third Armenian in this gambling game clique (Isaac Shary).

I liked the film, despite some of its faults, mainly because it seemed so real and lively. Like most neo-realist films, this means that you do not know what people will do next, so you get surprised. The story is basically noir, but told in a neo-realist way.
