Josh Goldin's Wonderful World

21 December 2009 4:11 AM, PST | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

In Wonderful World, which premiered at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival, Matthew Broderick stars as Ben Singer, a misanthropic pot-smoking single dad whose only friend is his Senegalese roommate Ibu, played by Michael K. Williams (The Wire, The Road). When Ibu falls ill, his beautiful sister Khadi (Sanaa Lathan) comes to visit and Ben finds his worldview slowly shifting. Tribeca sat down with Wonderful World writer and director Josh Goldin recently, where he talked about working with his longtime friend Broderick, chipping away at negativity, and his upcoming project with Jay Baruchel. Goldin's unnamed movie, which stars Baruchel as a stand-up comic in love, will be produced by Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa (Little Miss Sunshine, Little Children, Hamlet 2) and Danielle Renfrew (Waitress). Goldin wrote the script and will also direct. Tribeca Film: You wrote on the Huffington Post that the character of Ben is a combination of »

Sr Pick [Video]: 50 Movie Trailers In One

11 December 2009 4:37 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

For some, myself included, movie trailers are part of the movie-going experience. The commercials that precede them are the annoying things, but the trailers (as long as there’s not too many) add to the enjoyment of going to the movies. Of course, following daily movie news means we see trailers online before we do in theaters, which is slightly less affective in my eyes but nonetheless, a well made trailer can essentially decide whether someone will see a movie or not.

For the most part, the best movie in the world isn’t going to get butts in seats if it has a horrible trailer…

Sometimes they can be subtle yet still stay in your mind afterwards (the Little Children trailer comes straight to mind), and sometimes they can be bold and in-your-face, acting as an all-out assault on the senses to make as much of an impression as »

Best of the Decade #18: Little Children (2006)

4 December 2009 9:03 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

When we first started putting together our Top 20 Films of the Decade, I really didn't expect Todd Field's Little Children to be among the titles that would make our combined list. However, I'm definitely glad that it did because I think it's a fantastic film that a lot of people still haven't seen. Most of us here at Film Junk overlooked it back when it was in theatres, and didn't discover it until we recorded the very first episode of The Movie Club Podcast [1] the following year (we have our friends at Row Three [2] to thank for that). Although the marketing for the movie made it out to be a steamy romance or melodramatic Oscar bait, the truth is, the movie borders on dark comedy. I suppose anyone familiar with Todd Field or Tom Perotta would have known that from the start (Tom Perotta is the same man who »

Three New Nightmare on Elm Street Photos

3 December 2009 12:19 AM, PST | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Warner Brothers has released a new photos from the highly anticipated reboot of “A Nightmare on Elm Street.”

A Nightmare on Elm Street” synopsis: Freddy Krueger returns in “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” a contemporary re-imagining of the horror classic. A group of suburban teenagers share one common bond: they are all being stalked by Freddy Krueger, a horribly disfigured killer who haunts them in their dreams. As long as they stay awake, they can protect one another…but when they sleep, there is no escape.

Donning Freddy’s trademark fedora, red-and-green striped sweater, and four-bladed glove is Academy Award nominee Jackie Earle Haley (”Little Children,” “Watchmen”). The film is being directed by award-winning music video and commercial director Samuel Bayer (Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” Green Day’s “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”), marking his feature film debut.

The teens who are terrorized by Freddy Krueger are played by an ensemble of young actors, »

New Images And Official Synopsis From A Nightmare On Elm Street Remake

2 December 2009 4:53 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

In 2010, Platinum Dunes and New Line Cinema will be bringing your nightmares to life once again with a polished remake and revival of one of the most iconic horror franchises in the history of cinema – A Nightmare on Elm Street. Donning the glove and fedora this time around is Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), starring alongside the crispy dream stalker will be Rooney Mara as Nancy.

But of course you know all this already (we hope), the real news here is that three new stills have been released for the movie, which is arguably the biggest horror remake of all time.

Next to Hellraiser, this film is the one I’ve wanted to see remade the most, due to the advances in technology the studio could really go to town on the dream sequences. Having said that I’ve also seen the Friday the 13th remake and I’m currently crossing »

Cormac McCarthy Thinks 'Blood Meridian' Can be Filmed

13 November 2009 4:30 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Last August I wrote an article headlined "Cormac McCarthy's 'Blood Meridian' Can't Possibly Become a Movie" in response to continued word Little Children and In the Bedroom helmer Todd Field was set to direct McCarthy's blood-soaked 1985 breakthrough novel. Among the reasons given I wrote "there is no chance this book can be brought to the big screen and possibly keep its tone, not in the slightest." In a new interview with McCarthy and John Hillcoat, the director of the upcoming McCarthy adaptation The Road, McCarthy says "That's all crap."

John Jergensen interviewing for The Wall Street Joural said to the 76-year-old author, "People have said 'Blood Meridian' is unfilmable because of the sheer darkness and violence of the story." McCarthy responded: That's all crap. The fact that's it's a bleak and bloody story has nothing to do with whether or not you can put it on the screen. That's not the issue. »

Kellan Lutz Talks Nightmare on Elm Street

7 November 2009 9:38 AM, PST | movies.about.com | See recent movies.about.com news »

Kellan Lutz ('Emmett Cullen') spent his downtime between Twilight films New Moon and Eclipse working on the new A Nightmare on Elm Street film. Oscar nominee Jackie Earle Haley (Little Children) takes over the role of Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund portrayed the killer in all the previous films) and Lutz plays Dean, one of the people Freddy terrorizes, in this new, revamped take on the decades-old horror franchise.

Although the La press day for New Moon was focused 99.9% of the time on all things Twilight, A Nightmare on Elm Street came up during the press conference Lutz was a part of. When asked about the dream sequences and what audiences can expect from the 2010 film, Lutz joked that his character actually becomes the steel-gloved killer.

"It's great. I kill Jackie Earle Haley and take away his glove and sweater -- the sweater itches," said Lutz, laughing. "No. You know what? »

For decades, Hollywood cast the person they thought would bring in the most money for a movie role, often resulting in some odd choices (Vince Vaughn in "Psycho," Kevin Costner in "Robin Hood," Keanu Reeves in virtually everything) that were largely rejected by audiences. But now, it's the 21st century, and the Internet has made film more of a conversation than a monologue. From Michael Chiklis as The Thing in "Fantastic Four" to Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool in "Wolverine," several high-profile castings of the last few years have begun online — and Jackie Earle Haley couldn't be happier.

Above: Griffith's Intolerance.

In New York, Bam, Film Forum, and Anthology Film Archives are playing forgotten masterworks, unavailable on DVD, in pristine prints: this past week has surfaced prints of Elia Kazan’s America, America at Film Forum, Douglas Sirk’s A Time to Love and a Time to Die and André De Toth’s Man in the Saddle, Norman Rockwell with guns, at Bam, and an entire retrospective to Ulrike Ottinger at Anthology, where upcoming are long overdue retros of Roger Corman and Jerry Lewis. In most cases, it’s been decades since these films have been shown in New York.

Meanwhile, MoMA slugs on with deliberately disposable movies designed to draw families and indie teens who have already seen them: a Spike Jonze retro of his music videos and films; an upcoming Tim Burton retro the museum’s been working on for years; a just-completed “Recent Film Acquisitions »

Jackie Earle Haley Mooted To Play The Baddie In Green Lantern

19 October 2009 3:53 AM, PDT | Screenrush | See recent Screenrush news »

As Green Lantern creaks into production, word reaches us via Slash Film that the long-gestating superhero flick may have finally got itself a bad guy.

It's long been known that the Martin Campbell-directed blockbuster will star Ryan Reynolds as the eponymous ring-wielding crusader and it's now being strongly rumoured that his big bad will come in the shape of Jackie Earle Haley, who will reportedly play Sinestro.

If the movie sticks to the comic book origin story, Sinestro will act as mentor to new Gl Hal Jordan and introduce him to the intergalactic peace-keeping corps before eventually going all evil when he crafts himself a hugely powerful yellow ring - whether or not this will be the plot of the first movie or a set-up for a future sequel remains to be revealed though.

If the story is true, this should be an interesting development, as Haley has done »

Jackie Earle Haley to star in upcoming Green Lantern film

17 October 2009 11:10 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

All the Oscar attention he got for Little Children payed off in a big way for former child star turned toast of the town Jackie Earle Haley. Haley, who made fanboys cream their pants with his performance as Rorschach [1] (Watchmen) and soon to star upcoming Michael Bay-led reboot of Nightmare on Elm Street (playing Freddy Krueger), will now inhabit another favorite villain as Sinestro in Martin Campbell's Green Lantern. According to Harry Knowles of Ain't It Cool News [2], Jackie Earle Haley is near the top of the wishlist to play Sinestro, the biggest villain of the "Green Lantern" universe. In the same post, Knowles speculates that Superman will make a cameo in the film, stating it to be ¨an indicator that DC is paying attention and taking note of what Marvel is doing.¨ [1] http://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=7&ved=0CB0QFjAG&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww. »

Jackie Earle Haley, the Top Contender for 'Green Lantern' Villain

17 October 2009 12:27 AM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Following confirmation about its production that has been pulled out of Australia, "Green Lantern" is hit with a casting rumor. Ain't It Cool News (AICN) has come up with the story that the lead villain in this adaptation of the DC Comics' superhero may well be portrayed by Jackie Earle Haley.

According to Harry Knowles of AICN, someone "working on the film" claimed that the new Freddy Krueger of "A Nightmare on Elm Street" is on top of the actors list considered for the part of Sinestro. The scooper reportedly also spoiled that Superman "will be making a cameo," adding that "all depends upon how... other DC things go."

Sinestro is the former mentor of Hal Jordan and the arch-nemesis of the entire Green Lantern Corps. He was banished from the Corps after using the power of the Green Lantern to instill fear rather than combat it. In the casting call, »

One, two, Freddy's coming for you...yet again. Hollywood continues with its latest trend of taking something old and turning it into something new with this "reimagining" of the horror classic about everybody's favorite dream killer. Taking over for Robert Englund as the burned baddie with a wit as sharp as the blades on his glove is Watchmen and Little Children star Jackie Earle Haley, whose nighttime nuisance seems to get a bit more backstory this time around. While the updated version is clearly designed to introduce Freddy to a whole new generation, there are plenty of elements taken from the original that may help satisfy fans of the 1984 flick as well.
