To allow breathing room for the swarm of movies that hit theaters each December, Hollywood has historically burnt off its less-exciting fare in January. With a few exceptions, that seems to be the case again in January 2011. Without an Avatar-like holdover from December, it's inevitable that January 2011 will fall short of January 2010's record-setting $1.06 billion gross. Jan. 7The first weekend of January finds Nicolas Cage movie Season of the Witch facing the planned nationwide expansion of Country Strong. Season of the Witch, which was delayed from March 2010, doesn't seem to have much going for it. Medieval-set movies that don't involve Robin Hood rarely make much money, and Mr. Cage's drawing power has been spotty, including relatively soft returns for Kick-Ass ($48.1 million) and The Sorcerer's Apprentice ($63.2 million). Additionally, Season marks distributor Relativity Media's second nationwide release following The Warrior's Way, which was botched so badly that it earned less than $6 million since opening early December. »

As horror archetypes go, the “demonic possession” subgenre is one that didn’t really hit its stride until the 1973 release of the William Friedkin production of William Peter Blatty’s bestselling novel The Exorcist. Before that there were sporadic cinematic mentions of demons taking over the bodies of the living, but it was The Exorcist and the cultural phenomena it created that set the tone from then on.
After reports of people literally throwing up in theaters, passing out in their seats, and – most importantly – record box office numbers being tallied, the list of films that wanted a piece of the demonic action came fast and furious with titles such as Ovidio G. Assonitis and Robert Barrett’s Beyond The Door, aka The Devil Within Her (1974); the great Mario Bava’s La Casa Dell’Esorcismo, aka House of Exorcism, aka Lisa and the Devil (1974); and on through the years until »

How far can Tom Cruise go on the strength of a smile and a pair of sunglasses? Back in the days of Risky Business, a poster image of Cruise beaming his best "Wtf?" grin over the top of a pair of Wayfarers helped sell not only the movie but also the shades.
That image is recreated almost exactly in a signature shot from Knight and Day, a slipshod action-comedy caper that casts Cruise as a possibly paranoid super-spy on the run from his federal employers. It should have been the perfect vehicle for the star's peculiar charms – an allegedly character-driven smash-'em-up in which glamorous "nobody" Cameron Diaz falls for Cruise's eerily ageless hunk, thence to be thrown into a world of deadly danger from which only his killer smile can save her. The presence of director James Mangold, »

The Next Spider-Man movie appears to be taking an interesting turn, judging from the most recent castings.
Campbell Scott (The Exorcism of Emily Rose) and Julianne Nicholson (Law & Order: Criminal Intent) - both pictured above - are in discussions to play Peter Parker's parents Richard and Mary. Their deaths left their son an orphan and he was raised by his Uncle Ben (Richard's elder brother) and Aunt May.
Parker's parents didn't feature in the previous set of films and have rarely been shown in the comics, where they were later revealed to have been secret agents killed in a plane crash.
Also joining the cast is Slumdog Millionaire's Irrfan Khan (above right) as a villain named by HeatVision as Van Atter, while Annie Parisse would be the baddie's wife.
As has been reasonably speculated by fans, it seems likely this character is Nels Van Adder, an employee of Norman Osborn's company Oscorp. »

I personally never grew tired of home invasion thrillers, and apparently neither has Hollywood. Production is currently underway on The Replicas, which sees music video director Jeremy Regimbal at the helm. Josh Close (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Diary of the Dead), James DArcy (An American Haunting), Selma Blair (Hellboy, The Fog) and Rachel Miner (Penny Dreadful, The Butterfly Effect 3, Tooth & Nail) star in the pic that follows a couple that heads with their family to a vacation cottage to grieve after the death of their youngest child. Not long after, they are visited by the Sakowskis, a couple with an unhelpful agenda. Close penned the screenplay. »

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Marc Webb's Untitled Spider-Man Reboot has added a second villain to the fray in the form of Nels Van Adder to be played by Irrfan Khan whom most of you will remember as the Police Inspector from Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire.
I initially found nothing on the character in a search on the Internet, which may be due to the fact THR referred to the villain as "Van Atter" instead of what apparently should be "Van Adder." Nels Van Adder to be exact.
Based on information at The Green Goblin's Hideout, Van Adder was an employee of Osborn Industries and became a test subject for Norman Osborn (the character played by Willem Dafoe in the first Spider-Man feature) and as a result he turned into a demon-like monster the comics referred to as Proto-Goblin.

Two new movie posters with extreme use of photoshop have been released. The first one is the Anthony Hopkins supernatural thriller The Rite, and the other is the Vince Vaughn/Kevin James comedy The Dilemma. As you’ll see after the jump, both have liberally used photoshop to age down their leads. When you look at Vaughn, it’s like Universal took a photo from Swingers and used that as the starting point. Saying that, I’m still a huge fan of Vaughn and would love for The Dilemma to be worth our time. Hit the jump for the posters and the synopses.
The Dilemma poster and synopsis. Poster via Apple.

Films about exorcists and exorcisms are pretty tricky to pull off. Sure, it's easy to go the head-spinning and pea-soup-spitting way, but lately filmmakers have been relying more on subtlety when it comes to doing battle with the dark one and his minions. So how will The Rite handle the subject matter? Hopefully with a bit of both.
Below you'll find the latest still from the flick, which shows Anthony Hopkins doing his thing in the name of the Lord. Does his "mother suck cocks in Hell" like Father Karras'? We'll find out soon enough!

Ashley Bell has been a working actor since her teen years, appearing in plays in Los Angeles and in guest spots on TV shows, most notably the Showtime series "United States of Tara." Last year Bell signed on to play a girl seemingly possessed, in the low-budget horror film "The Last Exorcism." The weekend it opened, Bell flew into Los Angeles International Airport and was promptly swamped by paparazzi. "I didn't understand why there were all these photographers," Bell recalls with a laugh. "I actually asked somebody who they were there for, before I realized they were taking pictures of me."Horror has always been a tough genre for actors. Though the films traditionally do well at the box office, the actors' performances are not often singled out for praise. In the past, particularly in the 1970s, some actors saw their careers launched by scary movies: Think Amy Irving in "Carrie" and "The Fury, »
