Exclusive: For Amber Tamblyn, Having a Child Is the Ultimate Expression of Art
It has been a busy year for actress-director-author Amber Tamblyn. She’s released her feature directorial debut, is starring in a play and just gave birth to her first child.

At 34, Tamblyn is more than used to juggling a personal life and a professional one. She’s been working for over two decades, beginning with General Hospital and then becoming a household face as Joan on the CBS drama Joan of Arcadia before playing Tibby in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. But it’s this new job that’s completely unique to her.

“To have my first Mother's Day as a mother is just wild,” says Tamblyn, who married actor David Cross in 2012. And since her self-ascribed motto is “Never mind, I’ll do it” -- also the same name as her production company -- she’ll most likely be taking to her new and busier schedule as mother, writer, director

Blake Lively Has a Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Reunion, Reignites Movie Rumors
It's been a little over a decade since the first Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movie premiered, but the ladies are still as tight as ever. On Monday, Blake Lively and Alexis Bledel stepped out to support Amber Tamblyn's directorial debut at the premiere of Paint It Black in NYC. Here’s Why ‘Unforgettable’ Director Denise Di Novi Will Be the Woman Who Gets Another Shot

Here’s Why ‘Unforgettable’ Director Denise Di Novi Will Be the Woman Who Gets Another Shot
This weekend, veteran producer Denise Di Novi saw her directorial debut, Warner Bros.’ “Unforgettable,” make an underwhelming box-office debut with an estimated $4.8 million for the weekend. For most women, that would be the kiss of death: Very few women get the chance to direct studio films, and underperformance means there won’t be an encore. That won’t be the case for Di Novi.

Di Novi is like very few women in Hollywood. She’s an unapologetic product of the studios: After 20 years, she still has a rare overall deal at Warner Bros, where she was Tim Burton’s longtime producer (“Edward Scissorhands,” “Ed Wood,” “Nightmare Before Christmas,” his “Batman” films) as well as the shepherd to romantic hits like “Nights of Rodanthe” and Nicholas Sparks’ “A Night to Remember.” And,

Trailer Watch: Two Women Grieve and Rage in Amber Tamblyn’s “Paint It Black”

Paint It Black

In the newly released trailer for Amber Tamblyn’s “Paint It Black,” Josie (Alia Shawkat, “Search Party”) gets the phone call that everyone fears. “Has there been any individual you know that’s been missing recently?” the detective on the other end of the line asks. “We’ve got a white male registered as, uh, Oscar Wilde.” In a few silent cuts, we see Josie’s memories of the white male in question, who is actually her boyfriend, Michael (Rhys Wakefield, “House of Lies”). We also see her identify his body.

Unfortunately, bereavement and heartbreak aren’t the only obstacles Josie faces in the film. She also has to deal with Michael’s intense, cruel mother, Meredith (Janet McTeer, “Me Before You”). “If my son had never met you, would he have killed himself?” Meredith wonders aloud to Josie.

Josie and Meredith definitely not friends — or even friendly, really — but their mutual grief binds them together and the two women form a relationship, one that the film’s synopsis describes as “equal parts distrust and blind need.”

Paint It Black” marks actress Tamblyn’s directorial debut. Her acting credits include “Two and a Half Men,” “House,” and “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” franchise. When “Paint It Black” debuted at last year’s La Film Fest, Tamblyn told us that she was inspired to make the movie as soon as she read its source material, Janet Fitch’s book of the same name. “Its story had a rare and delicate cinematic power in its language,” Tamblyn explained, “different from any other book I’d read before.”

“My hope was to make a movie that was as visually intoxicating as it is psychologically — a true and twisted look at the violent, terrifying, and beautiful subconscious lives of women in the throws of major life changes,” Tamblyn explained when “Paint It Black” was acquired by Imagination Worldwide. “I wanted to make a film about the literal way in which women grieve, not a film about women’s grief.”

Tamblyn, who penned the film’s script with Ed Dougherty (“Gone to Jasper”), published a book of poetry in 2015. “Dark Sparkler” is comprised of poems from the perspectives of 25 actresses, including Sharon Tate, Marilyn Monroe, and Brittany Murphy.

Paint It Black” opens May 19.

Review — ‘Deidra & Laney Rob a Train’ Is Dual Genre Delight

‘Deidra & Laney Rob a Train’ Is Dual Genre DelightThe high school heist earns the pun “Ocean’s For Teen.”

Contrary to the title, Deidra and Laney rob many trains. They become prolific thieves, mastering and streamlining their illegal profession into the delicate series of events we usually see in heist movies. All while the sisters attend high school. Yes, Deidra & Laney Rob a Train is both a caper film and a high school comedy and for every moment it stumbles at one, it excels at the other.

Put into a desperate living situation after their mother’s (Danielle Nicolet) nervous breakdown-induced incarceration (she liberates a TV from her blue-poloed electronics store job, then this mortal coil), elder sister Deidra (Ashleigh Murray) must care for her younger sister Laney (Rachel Crow) and kid brother Jet (Lance Gray) against forces such as mortgage payments and snooping Cps agents. I like movies that understand how a small part of the
