Is First Time Timur Bekmambetov's Gravity? [Trailer]

9 June 2015 8:43 AM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Russian producer Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Night Watch) is bringing what looks to be a thrilling space film in the same wheelhouse as Alfonso Cuarón's Gravity. Called First Time (or Vremya Pervyh), the movie is based on the true story of cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, the first man in space.

More specifically, First Time chronicles Leonov's arduous, five meter space walk from one part of the "Voskhod-2" to the another and with only 30 minutes of oxygen.

Synopsis:

March 18, 1965. For 77 days before the Americans went into space, the Soviet Union wins the technological race when Alexei Leonov first greeted earthlings from outer space, and, according to the chronicle, safely walked back to the ship. But these 5 meters to the gateway are the [Continued ...] »

Game Of Thrones season 5 episode 8 review: Hardhome

1 June 2015 6:58 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Week nine has come early in Game Of Thrones' fifth season, judging by this blistering and chilling battle episode...

This review contains spoilers.

5.8 Hardhome

There's something of a tradition on Game Of Thrones that the ninth episode is the centerpiece of the season, the default finale if you will, with an episode afterwards to pick up the pieces. Ned Stark lost his head in the ninth episode. Tyrion saved King's Landing in the Battle of Blackwater in the ninth episode. The Wildling invasion was repelled by the Night's Watch and the forces of Stannis Barratheon in the ninth episode. It was a nice day for a Red Wedding in the ninth episode. And yet, this is the eighth episode of the season and it's as awesome and crazy and mind-blowing as any action sequence from Neil Marshall could have hoped to be.

I'm not sure why I thought I »

The Flatiron Hex Created by James Godwin Directed and co-written by Tom Burnett Dixon Place 161A Chrystie Street, NY, NY 10002 May 15-30, 2015

The best way to describe James Godwin's wildly inventive The Flatiron Hex is that it is like watching a big-budget summer sci-fi action-comedy performed by one man, with puppets and a couple of projectors. Making its world premier at Dixon Place, a space that grew out of salons held in Artistic Director Ellie Covan's living room and is primarily dedicated to helping artists create and develop new work, The Flatiron Hex brings to mind Neil Gaiman's American Gods and the works of William Gibson and Cory Doctorow, as well as films such as Night Watch and Hellboy, through a lens of 1940s and 50s hardboiled noir. Godwin, who made his own debut at Dixon Place in 1988, creates a future New York City, now known as Nyorg, »

Review: 'Game of Thrones' - 'Kill the Boy': Grown Ups

11 May 2015 1:38 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Alan is on vacation this week. In his absence, Hitfix Editor-in-Chief Richard Rushfield is stepping in to guest recap “Game of Thrones.” “A Targaryen alone in the world is a terrible thing.” Hello everyone and thank you for letting me step me into these very big shoes this week.  First of all, just to declare my conflicts of interests, while I know this blog has shown a decided leaning towards the simpering survivors of the Stark family, I stand Lannister proud; true in my loyalty to Queen Cersei, the only one in this realm of the deluded fit to preside over the Seven Kingdoms.  However, I promise readers to do my utmost to put my personal preferences to the side as we consider together the important question of just what the heck was going on this week and where are we all headed in this Game. This episode, in fact, »

Unfriended Review

2 May 2015 4:33 AM, PDT | www.themoviebit.com | See recent TheMovieBit news »

Completely taking place on a teenager's laptop, Unfriended feels like the logical evolution of the found footage horror genre, with handheld cameras being replaced by web cams, and really, with the anonymity the Internet offers, is there a scarier place in this day and age? The back story is set up in the opening minutes with, in a poignant commentary of cyber bullying, an embarrassing YouTube video that forced teenager Laura Barnes to take her own life a year earlier. When her 'friends', including Blaire (Shelly Hennig) and Mitch (Moses Jacob Storm), convene for a group Skype call, they find it gatecrashed by a mysterious user, who just so happens to be using Laura's account, setting in motion a deadly game where secrets are revealed and only one can survive. Coming from director Levan Gabriadze and producer Timur Bekmembetov (Night Watch, Wanted), with help from current leader in low budget horror Blumhouse, »

Will MGM's Return to 'Ben-Hur' Stand Up to the Oscar Winner?

2 February 2015 11:42 AM, PST | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

If you've never seen MGM's celebrated 1959 "Ben-Hur," starring Charlton Heston and an astonishing chariot race--remember, effects were special back then, not CGI --you're in for a treat. The winner of 11 Oscars still holds up. And after HBO's "Rome" and Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" (let's forget holiday flop "Exodus," shall we?) and the VFX toolkits available today, it's easy to see why a reboot is tempting. Luckily, MGM and partner Paramount have signed up a visually sophisticated director adept at rip-roaring action and VFX (see "Night Watch" and "Wanted"): Moscow-based director Timur Bekmambetov. "Boardwalk Empire" and "American Hustle" star Jack Huston is beefing up to take on the Heston role of Judah Ben-Hur, and principal photography on the new "Ben-Hur" (February 26, 2016) has begun in Rome and Matera, Italy.  Also starring are Morgan Freeman as Ilderim, Toby »

Rodrigo Santoro To Play Ben-Hur's Jesus

13 January 2015 4:01 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Having played the bizarre giant god-emperor Xerxes in 300 and its sequel Rise Of An Empire, Rodrigo Santoro is now in line to play another religious icon. He's negotiating to be one Jesus of Nazareth in MGM and Paramount's upcoming Ben-Hur remake. Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch, Wanted) is directing. Yes indeed, ladies and gentlemen: Timur Bekmambetov has found Jesus. Thank you, we'll be here all week.In the 1959 film, Jesus shows up towards the end. Charlton Heston's Ben-Hur takes the ailing Tirzah (Cathy O'Donnell) to be healed, but they arrive too late. Jesus' trial, presided over by Pontius Pilate (Frank Thring) has already begun, and Ben-Hur then witnesses the events of the crucifixion. Jesus was played on this occasion by the opera singer Claude Heater, although his name doesn't appear in the credits.Taken once again from Lew Wallace’s 1880 novel (which actually carries on significantly beyond Jesus' execution), the »

New Trailer For Unfriended

13 January 2015 4:05 AM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Not as scary as Unfollowed, the Twitter-based shocker we’re working on, but still packing more than a shiver or two is Unfriended, a horror-thriller that boasts a new trailer set around Skype and social media. Click below to take a look at this antisocial network.   Preying on social media insecurities (and lives) of teenagers, is a mysterious stalky figure hunting bloody vengeance for a viral video that led directly to a suicide a year earlier. Is the girl who killed herself, a despised bully called Laura Barns (Heather Sossaman), back from the dead or is this the work of some other crazed lunatic with superb tech skills? Either way, “billie227” has gory payback in mind. With Timur ‘Night Watch’ Bekmambetov and Jason ‘Blumhouse’ Blum the driving forces behind it, this one isn’t short of horror pedigree. The film’s new poster sells its concept fairly neatly. Unfriended makes »

Trailer For Unfriended

13 January 2015 3:55 AM, PST | www.themoviebit.com | See recent TheMovieBit news »

Originally titled Cybernatural, Unfriended tells a tale of revenge that all unfolds on a computer screen, as a group of teenagers are stalked online by a mysterious and unseen figure. Given the high concept premise, this could have easily been yet another direct to DVD horror movie, but conceived and developed by Night Watch and Wanted's Timur Bekmembetov (handing the directing reins to Levan Gabriadze), this shows a hell of a lot of promise, delivering a unique, and highly effective, spin on a well worn premise. Check out the trailer below. Released: 17th April (U.S.)/ 1st May (Irl/U.K.) »
