Michael Pitt set for Martin Scorsese's HBO pilot

30 December 2008 2:00 PM, PST | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Michael Pitt is in final negotiations to star opposite Steve Buscemi in "Boardwalk Empire," Martin Scorsese's drama pilot for HBO.

Written by Terrence Winter and to be directed by Scorsese, "Empire" is based on Nelson Johnson's book, which chronicles the 1920s origins of Atlantic City, N.J.

The story centers on Nucky Johnson (Buscemi), a cunning businessman who runs a liquor distribution ring at the onset of Prohibition, and Jimmy Darmody (Pitt), a young, highly intelligent and ruthless Wwi veteran, a low-level flunky for Nucky who wants to quickly climb the ladder.

Kelly Macdonald was previously cast in the pilot.

"Empire" is executive produced by Scorsese, Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Winter.

Pitt, who recurred on "Dawson's Creek," has starred in the feature films "The Dreamers," "The Village," "Last Days" and "Funny Games." »

Milk Trailer!

3 September 2008 8:25 PM, PDT | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

Gus Van Sant is an artist. With his last few films, among them Paranoid Park and Last Days, he has made sure that we don't forget it. The master of dreamlike landscapes and lyrical, mood-driven atmosphere, it's sometimes easy to forget that this is also the man who directed straight up dramas like Good Will Hunting and Finding Forrester. Well it looks like good ol' Gus has decided to pay the world of conventional narratives another visit, albeit on the seat of a very controversial subject. »

Interview: Whit Stillman on "Metropolitan"

13 August 2008 7:24 PM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

By Stephen Saito

It's been nearly 17 years since "Metropolitan" aired for free on PBS's "American Playhouse." On the surface, the placement would seem appropriate for a comedy set amidst the afterparties of New York debutante balls, one that popularized the term Uhb (Urban Haute Bourgeoisie, of course) and created a superhero for the Park Avenue set in Nick Smith (Chris Eigeman, in his first starring role), the party gadfly who wielded words as if they were daggers. Incidentally, had "American Playhouse" not kicked in some money during the production of "Metropolitan," Whit Stillman's brilliant first film might not have been completed, the beginning of a trilogy that was as formative an experience for some during the '90s (this writer included) as John Hughes' films were for those growing up in the '80s.

So it should be considered a great triumph that "Metropolitan" is now once again available for the masses gratis, »
