In the ongoing quest for verifiable ratings data from streaming giants like Amazon and Netflix, Amazon showrunner has Jonathan Shapiro provided a new guidepost.

“Our show is the most binged show in the history of Amazon,” the “Goliath” co-creator and showrunner recently revealed.

Shapiro (“The Practice,” “Boston Legal”), who is a former federal prosecutor who co-created the legal drama with David E. Kelley, made the comments during a keynote address at the Los Angeles Intellectual Property Law Association’s Techtainment 3.0 conference at Loyola Law School.

James Spader won three Emmys for his role as Alan Shore on David E. Kelley's law drama Boston Legal, but the longtime writer-producer behind Ally McBeal and The Practice said he received pushback from the powers that be when he first tried to cast Spader in the role.

"I was told that no one would ever welcome James Spader into their living room," Kelley recalled Thursday at a TV Game Changers panel presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. "People will watch him in the movies, but they will never let him in their own home."

Shelley Berman, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Boston Legal Actor, Dead at 92
Shelley Berman, who played Larry’s father, Nat, on Curb Your Enthusiasm, died Friday from complications from Alzheimer’s Disease. He was 92.

A post on Berman’s official Facebook fan page announced his passing, adding, “He slipped away peacefully, in his sleep, with no pain, as far as his hospice care workers could tell.”

Shelley Berman, Stand-Up Comic and ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ Actor, Dies at 92
Famed stand-up comic Shelley Berman, who recently played Larry David’s father on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” has died. He was 92.

Berman died early Friday morning due to complications from Alzheimer’s Disease at his home in Bell Canyon, Calif., his publicist confirmed to Variety.

The Grammy winner and Emmy-nominated actor was one of the most successful stand-up comedians of the 1950s and ’60s. His 1959 live record, “Inside Shelley Berman,” was the first comedy album to be certified gold (with more than 500,000 sales) and was the first non-musical recording to win a Grammy Award. Two other albums, “Outside Shelley Berman” and “The Edge of Shelley Berman,” also went gold.

Berman was the first stand-up comic to perform at Carnegie Hall. He appeared on “The Ed Sullivan Show” more than 20 times and was a guest on shows hosted by Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Dinah Shore, Perry Como, Andy Williams, and Dean Martin.

Actor Jay Thomas, best known for his roles in the classic sitcoms “Murphy Brown” and “Cheers,” has died, Variety has confirmed. He was 69.

Jay Thomas was one of the funniest and kindest men I have had the honor to call both client and friend for 25 years-plus,” his publicist Thomas Estey told Variety. “He will be dearly missed by so many.”

According to The New York Daily News, which first reported the news, Thomas died following a battle with cancer. No other details were immediately available about the circumstances of his death.

Thomas most recently played Marty Grossman, the operator of a sleazy website, on the Showtime drama “Ray Donovan.”

He starred as a sportswriter on his own sitcom, “Love & War,” from 1992 to 1995, while recurring on “Murphy Brown” from 1989 to 1998. Thomas earned two Emmy Awards for outstanding guest actor in a comedy series for his role as obnoxious tabloid talk show host Jerry Gold on CBS’ hit Candice Bergen

Robert Zemeckis, Jeff Rake Score Put Pilot Order for Missing Plane Mystery Series at NBC
Robert Zemeckis and Jeff Rake have gotten a put pilot order at NBC for a new series that centers around a plane that mysteriously disappeared, Variety has confirmed.

The series, currently titled “Manifest,” follows the passengers of a plane that disappeared from radar and returns five years later after being untraceable and presumed lost at sea. No time has passed for those on the plane but, for their loved ones at home, a long five years have gone by.

Rake will executive produce and write. Zemeckis will executive produces through his Compari Entertainment banner Compari’s Jack Rapke will also executive produce, while Compari’s Jackie Levine will co-executive produce. Warner Bros. Television, where Zemeckis is set up under an overall deal, will produce. Zemeckis and Rake are repped by Wme.

This is Zemeckis’ second put pilot order in the past few weeks, with ABC giving out such an order for a “Jetsons” live action series that

Big Little Lies season 2 plans: Author Liane Moriarty reportedly developing more stories.

Big Little Lies has been a huge success for HBO, and now that season one is done thoughts are turning to furthering the story. Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Alexander Skarsgard starred in the show for the network, which was based on the best-seller by Liane Moriarty. The author recently caught up with The Sydney Morning Herald who spoke about a Big Little Lies season 2.

“I have started to think about ways this could continue. The producers have asked me to see if I can come up with some ideas. I wouldn’t write a new book but perhaps a new story, and then we’ll see what happens.”

The show didn’t going into the back story of the character of Bonnie, played by Zoe Kravitz, and her relationship with her abusive father – something that the book did.
