The reconstructions in the BBC's long-running Crimewatch series don't often show the down and dirty side of things, which is strange, given the programme's post-watershed time slot. This short-lived BBC2 series sought to change all that, with unflinching, graphic and remorselessly detailed reconstructions of all kinds of horrors, including (and this is just the very first episode) a failed murder-by-car-bombing, with the intended victim crawling away from the smouldering wreckage, dragging her shattered and useless limbs behind her. The carnage and gore scenes were inter-cut with interviews featuring detectives assigned to the case and forensic laboratory workers. Charmless and exploitative stuff, all told, but it was the eighties, and apparently everyone involved in programme making was at it. (See also THREADS and THE MAD DEATH.) Crimewatch, which at least had the decency to remind its viewers not to have nightmares, continued its monthly crusade largely unbuffered by this thrill-seeking upstart, although an early nineties repeat screening brought the horror of that squawking jazz saxophone theme tune to a new generation.
