My Movie Diary (2000-2009)

28 December 2009 6:58 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

I can’t remember why, I’ve slept since then, but, in January of 2000, I found myself sitting in front of a blank Word document.  I had an idea in my head of what I wanted to do, and, now, 10 years later, I’m still working strong at it.  I began keeping a sort of diary, listing the days and months and putting down the films I saw in the theater into it.  I don’t remember why I only included movies I saw in the theater.  I could have started just as an idea-giver on how many movies I actually saw each year (I also kept a running count each year).  It began on January 7th, 2000, when I entered Bicentennial Man as my first film in this long and ever-growing endeavor.

In 2000, I saw 166 films in the theater.  There were many a high (seeing Gladiator on May 5th and »

2010 Winter movie preview

28 December 2009 9:17 AM, PST | Tampa Film Examiner | See recent Tampa Film Examiner news »

What's worth checking out inside?

The Winter movie release schedule for 2010 is pretty much a roll-of-the-dice for moviegoers.  Obvious choices like Shutter Island and Alice in Wonderland will attract audiences for a variety of reasons.  Will there be anything else that will standout over the next few months though?  Here's a look at some possible flicks to check out and ones you may want to avoid.

2010 begins with the uber-popular vampire genre in Daybreakers.  Vampires are still a draw these days and that alone will have people heading to the theaters.  Having a top-notch cast that includes Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe could give this movie some life (pun intended).  The story seems to be predictable though, and having vampires that aren't terrifying is getting a bit stale.  In the end, fangs=$$$.  This is one of those times where one should read the critics take on this before going in blind. »

Hilton Stages Wedding With Morgan

27 December 2009 2:56 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Paris Hilton has walked down the aisle with revered British journalist Piers Morgan for a new TV special.

The socialite showed off her sense of humour when she agreed to 'marry' the America's Got Talent judge in a staged 15-minute ceremony at the Little Church of the West for the upcoming U.K. programme Piers Morgan On... Las Vegas.

Hilton donned a long white bridal gown and veil, before exchanging vows and rings with Morgan in front of witness including an Elvis Presley lookalike and a Marilyn Monroe impersonator.

And the 28-year-old blonde insists the low-key celebration was typical of Sin City's shenanigans: "You can do anything here - it's crazy! What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas."

Morgan jokes, "You know what it's like - you have a few drinks, spend too long on the blackjack table, get overexcited and do something silly. I have to say, Paris scrubbed up to be a beautiful bride. It was magical."

The fake nuptials served as a useful practice session for Morgan, who proposed to journalist Celia Walden in Paris, France earlier this month. »

IMDb, RottenTomatoes: Movies of the Decade

27 December 2009 2:29 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

At the end of the year, and especially the decade, you’re inundated with enough top lists that they themselves should be ranked.  Plenty of other websites and other media outlets have been counting down basically the same best movies, which is partially the reason I spared you the numbered trips down memory lane.  (But before I write myself into a hypocritical corner, I’ll still be doing my traditional top movies of the year list.  Hint: New Moon isn’t on it)

That being said, here are two definitive lists of note that highlight what was critically lauded this decade on RottenTomatoes.com and what the movie fans and voters on IMDb.com felt were the best the aughts had to offer.  Slashfilm compiled the top 20 from Rt and they snatched up the top 25 off IMDb for your look at how the decade fared in movies.

There are a few surprises on both lists, »

The 15 Most Anticipated Films of 2010

27 December 2009 10:16 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

So you’ve unwrapped all of your Christmas presents, received three copies of District 9 from multiple uncommunicative family members, and the year of 2009 is about to be wrapped up. The debate is over: 2009 has been a great year for film. So what do you do now?

Why, start thinking about what’s around the corner, of course!

While there’s less in the way of interesting sci-fi, as 2009 will surely be remembered for, 2010 has plenty of interesting new films in store, as well as some remakes, reboots and sequels. Here’s a list of the 15 most anticipated films of 2010, in order of release, followed by a minefield of movies you might consider avoiding.

The Wolfman (February 12)

Originally scheduled for release this year and pushed back due to production delays, it seems that Joe Johnston’s The Wolfman is finally upon us. While news of reshoots and delays always send »

IMDb’s Top 25 Movies Of The Decade

27 December 2009 8:35 AM, PST | ShadowAndAct | See recent ShadowAndAct news »

As compiled by SlashFilm… IMDb’s top 25 films of the decade, as voted by IMDb’s millions of users. And as SlashFilm noted, it might be easy for any of us to immediately dismiss this list as nothing but fanboy and fangirl contributions, however, this is definitely the largest sampling of opinions of all the other best of lists that we’ve seen so far, and will ever see… until some other site comes along that trumps IMDb in terms of user numbers.

So, here they are, accompanied by the year of release and number of votes received. They are ranked based on a combination of total votes and overall rating (which I didn’t include). So there are films that have more votes than others before them, but rank lower on the list due to their overall rating:

1. The Dark Knight (2008) 410,450

2. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King »

Brittany Murphy and the beastly cult of perfection

26 December 2009 4:06 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

What does it say about our society if even Hollywood starlets don't feel up to much?

Did Hollywood kill Brittany Murphy, the Sin City actress who died of a heart attack? Her half-brother, Jeff Bertolotti, seems to think so. He said: "People come with their dreams and get chewed up alive and those who make it get chewed up alive anyway."

Murphy, 32, was said to suffer from a heart murmur and a food disorder. Reports state that up to 10 types of prescription drugs were found in her home – for bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety and to stop seizures. There were also pain-relief pills, for what has been widely described as a "plastic surgery addiction" – breast job, nose job, lip job and liposuction – a list that can only be viewed with sadness and anger.

No one is claiming that Murphy was one of the acting greats but she does not deserve to »

Brittany Murphy's Father Not Invited to Her Christmas Eve Funeral

23 December 2009 6:50 PM, PST | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

A funeral service for the late Brittany Murphy has been set, and it will take place on Christmas Eve, December 24, five days after her sudden passing. While it is still unclear who will attend the service, Radar Online reported on the one who is not invited, that is the father of the "Sin City" actress.

Angelo Bertolotti, who had been estranged from Murphy for the past eight years, told the site that even if he is invited, he won't come because he is too saddened by her death. "I just don't want to see that happen, I just want to remember her alive," he stated, adding that he'll visit her grave later on. "I'll wait about a month to go out there," so he said.

Meanwhile, a recently-issued press release confirmed that the 32-year-old actress will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles. »
