Another Attempt at a Sam Cooke Biopic in Collaboration w/ His Family (Who Should Star?)

It was in mid-2011 when we first announced that a Sam Cooke biopic was in the works.  At the time, a script had already been written (by the screenwriters who penned Julie Taymor's "Across The Universe," and "The Commitments" - Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais), which was an adaptation of Peter Guralnick's 2005 bio, "Dream Boogie: The Triumph of Sam Cooke." Cast This: Sam Cooke Biopic In The Works (Who Should Star? Direct?)

In the last decade or so, there seems to be a burgeoning interest in biopics of black musicians from yesteryear. From Marvin Gaye, to Bob Marley, Mahalia Jackson, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin (although she’s still very much alive), and others I’m forgetting at the moment. We’ve written about them all on this website.

This morning, I learned that a Sam Cooke biopic is in the works. In fact, a script has already been written (by the screenwriters who penned Julie Taymor’s Across The Universe, and The Commitments - Dick Clement and Ian Le Frenais) – an adaptation of Peter Guralnick’s 2005 bio Dream Boogie: The Triumph of Sam Cooke.

The news comes 4 years after author Guralnick produced the award-winning documentary Sam Cooke: Legend, said to be “the only authorized documentary on Cooke.”

The upcoming film will reportedly cover Cooke’s entire life (born in 1931, killed in 1964).
