50 Reasons Why We Love Pixar

15 July 2011 5:56 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

In case you missed it, for the month, we were Obsessed With Pixar, a site-wide take-over on our previous home Obsessed With Film that was designed to show our appreciation for the greatest animation studio in the history of film-making. But what makes Pixar so great? Is it just the films? Is it the characters? Is it the joyful and playful ethos behind the company? Or is it all of the above?

Well, follow the link to find out exactly why we love Pixar…

1. The characters: Woody and Buzz

The relationship that a lot of Pixar’s modern reputation was built on, the sometimes volatile dynamic between the “wimpy cowboy doll” and his Space Ranger best buddy is built on the solid foundation of exceptional character development and wonderful, appropriate voice work by Tom Hanks and Tim Allen.

Review: Kung Fu Panda 2 A Superior, Kid-Focused Sequel

11 June 2011 10:13 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Three years ago thanks to Dreamworks and Jack Black, the world was introduced to one of the best animal animation film since Pixar established the animation watershed moment with Toy Story in 1995. The effortless charm of that film, combined with Black’s own unique charisma, and an exceptional wider cast determined that the film was a massive success, and somewhat inevitably this week sees the British release of the follow-up.

So, is Kung Fu Panda 2 no more than a cynical cash-in attempt by the studio? Or is it a worthy stand-alone on its own merits?

The good news is that the sequel works well off the foundation laid by the first film: Dreamworks have clearly recognised the blue-print for success in the better aspects of the first, and have taken the opportunity of the sequel to strip away from of the more superfluous elements and concentrate on what worked. »

Hugh Grant Takes The Lead In The Pirates! Band Of Misfits

An Aardman Production For Sony Pictures Animation Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek, Brian Blessed, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen Also On Board

Culver City, Calif. – Hugh Grant will voice the lead role alongside an all-star cast in The Pirates! Band Of Misfits, the new stop-motion, 3D, animated film produced by Aardman Animations for Sony Pictures Animation. The film, which will be distributed by Columbia Pictures, will be released March 30, 2012 in North America.

Hugh Grant, starring in his first animated role, is the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain – a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas. With a rag-tag crew at his side (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen), and seemingly blind to the impossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) to »

Sony Pictures Animation Picks up Children’s Book Muncle Trogg

31 March 2011 10:45 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Sony Pictures Animation has acquired the screen rights to Janet Foxley children's novel Muncle Trogg.  Deadline's description says the book is about a "fairytale community" who live in volcano and hidden away from humans.  However, the official description of the novel (via Amazon) says that the hidden-dwellers are giants and that the title character is a small giant that's laughed at by the other giants for being human-sized.  Muncle then goes to take a look at the "Smallings" and is surprised by what he discovers. Spa has had a mixed track record so far.  They launched with the forgettable Open Season, followed up with the slightly better Surf's Up, and then hit it out of the park with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.  This year they have the live-action/CGI hybrid The Smurfs and a collaboration with Wallace and Gromit creators Aardman Animation for the holiday flick Arthur Christmas. »

This Week in DVD & Blu-ray: Black Swan, Tangled, Fair Game, Treme (Season 1), and More

This Week in DVD & Blu-ray is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD and Blu-ray releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy and Fry’s. Black Swan Darren Aronofsky doesn't want you to experience joy or happiness. He wants to devastate you. He wants to punish you as he does his characters, fully immersing you in every dreary facet of their world as it collapses around them. And he is really, really good at it. Aronofsky has always shown a fascination with the degeneration of the body and mind, finding its limits when tested against paranoia, addiction, disease and giant planks of wood covered in nails and barbed wire. It's amusing then, that his most horrifying exercise in body horror would be a wildly operatic melodrama about ballet. In Black Swan, you are not treated as an observer to Natalie Portman's »

This Week in DVD & Blu-ray: Jackass 3, The Walking Dead (Season 1), The Next Three Days, Morning Glory, Four Lions, and More

8 March 2011 1:00 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

This Week in DVD & Blu-ray is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD and Blu-ray releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy and Fry’s. Four Lions For at least half of its runtime, Four Lions is a relatively good-natured comedy, foremost because its characters seem like relatively good-natured people. This is obviously in spite of the film's subject matter, which focuses on a group of young Muslim men aspiring to become Jihadi Islamist terrorists. Like 2009's In the Loop, the film aims to highlight the absurdity of contentious political issues, making light of a dark topic with some smartly observed satire. But there are two major differences between In the Loop and Four Lions. The first is that Four Lions is a sillier film. Its committed to the realism of its semi-documentary style, but only as much as, say, This Is Spinal Tap. »
