Trivia

Before release, Disney decided that Lindsay Lohan was a bit too busty for the image they wanted for the film, and used digital techniques to reduce her bust size.
Director Angela Robinson said in the commentary that she purposely left hidden crew equipment and cheap camera tricks in the film to give Herbie fans something to look for that was fun, and also just to simply aggravate her editor, who practically begged her to fix the problems before the film was released.
Four Herbies were made for the rail-riding stunt in the first race. One was made to jump up the rail and two were made to ride on the rail.
For this film's day, "sneak preview screening", (on Sunday, June 19th, 2005), Disney offered free tickets to anyone named Herbert or any derivation thereof (Herb, Herbie, et cetera).
The original script was greenlit largely because the studio liked its decisions to A) place the Herbie character into a realistic world and B) make Herbie's powers subtle and presented in small increments. Later script revisions ended up presenting a more cartoonish and fantasy-based world.
Most of the scenes shot at Auto Club Speedway were during the pace laps of the Target House 300, a NASCAR Xfinty Series race; and the Pop Secret 500, an NASCAR Sprint Cup race.

Lindsay Lohan became upset after the film's premiere after discovering her single "First" was placed during the end credits and not during the big race scene.
This is the first Herbie film where none of the characters are related in some way to Jim Douglas, Tennessee Steinmetz or any of the characters from the original "Love Bug" films.
Herbie The Love Bug was a 1963 Volkswagen Beetle deluxe ragtop sedan painted in Volkswagen L87 pearl white. Under normal circumstances, the interior would be a matching white. However, Herbie's interior was painted a special non-reflective grey color so the camera and studio lights would not reflect.
Some deleted and alternate footage appears in the movie's trailer:
  • A shot of Charisma (Jill Ritchie) in the kitchen saying "Whoa."
  • The shot of the Mexican-looking guy in the crowd lowering his glasses is flipped, though the text on the signs in the background is not reversed. So either the shot in the trailer or the one in the film was digitally corrected so that the text would not be backwards.
  • A shot of Herbie making a "crazy face" at Trip Murphy (Matt Dillon) shows him lying on the ground facing Herbie (his knee is in the shot). In the movie his back is to Herbie.
  • Ray Peyton Sr. (Michael Keaton) and Maggie (Lindsay Lohan) by the trophy/plaque wall where she says to him "I didn't know that you took out another mortgage on the house."
  • A shot of Maggie falling back onto her bed.

Just before the start of the street race between Maggie (Lindsay Lohan) and Trip Murphy (Matt Dillon) the camera pans in on Herbie's engine then exits thru the muffler just as the race begins. A possible nod to the street racing film The Fast and the Furious (2001).

Cameo: Dodge Charger When Maggie is pretending to race in a stock car in the junkyard, it's the same Dodge Charger from the end of The Fast And The Furious (2001) you can tell by the damage to the left fender and the roof.

When Maggie (Lindsay Lohan) test drives Trip Murphy's (Matt Dillon) NASCAR Nextel Cup car, lights had to be added to the front of the car. NASCAR Cup cars do not have lights on the vehicle.

The stock car that Maggie Peyton (Lindsay Lohan) sits in at Crazy Dave's sports the number 86 on it. Michael Keaton would later voice Chick Hicks in Cars (2006) who also sports the number 86.
