The Brady Kids had been touring with this act and the stop in Hollywood afforded their costars an opportunity to catch the show. There's a glimpse of Robert Reed and Ann B. Davis sitting together in the audience during Johnny Whitaker's performance.
The 1997 Rhino home video edition was issued as stand-alone VHS, plus there were two variations of the "Deluxe Set" which included audio from the show on CD and cassette. The standard and deluxe editions included different cover photos, both of which were promotional stills of characters on the set of H.R. Pufnstuf (1969).
The special was drastically edited down from 50 to 22 minutes when it aired on Nick-at-Nite during their Puf-a-Palooza marathon in the 1990s. All of the Lidsville characters and various other sketches were omitted. Soon afterward, Rhino released the original uncut version on VHS.
The heart of the performance was a variation of "The H.R. Pufnstuf Show," a live show which toured the USA for several years beginning in 1972. It was altered to accommodate an appearance by the TV show's star, Jack Wild.
