Ethan Hunt vs. Ethan Hawke

18 December 2011 11:00 AM, PST | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

While several characters in the "Mission: Impossible" films are taken from the original 1960s TV show, Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt was created specifically for America's movie star extraordinaire. Hunt's M.O. is that he doesn't stop ... ever. The unflappable Imf super-agent will do whatever it takes to stop a madman from unleashing warfare, be it chemical, nuclear, or other.

Who could possibly go head-to-head with such a deadly adversary? We chose New York-based actor, writer and Gen-x slacker icon Ethan Hawke, not so much because he has the necessary skills to beat someone of Hunt's caliber, but because their names are kinda similar.

On the eve of the "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" release, find out who comes out on top in this battle of monumental proportions.

Occupation

Ethan Hunt: Agent of the elite Impossible Mission Force (Imf)

Ethan Hawke: Actor, director, screenwriter and novelist

'Secret Circle' balances the ratio: Michael Graziadei and Sammi Rotibi to guest star

16 November 2011 5:27 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Now that Jake (Chris Zylka) has left Chance Harbor (though hopefully not for long), "The Secret Circle" is suffering from a serious dude deficit. Thomas Dekker can't be the only man in our lives, right?

Luckily, the ladies won't have to wait long before the ratio evens out a bit. Two very good looking men are coming to town when the show returns in 2012.

Michael Graziadei has been tapped to play Callum, who is dangerously compelling despite his quick temper. We should expect to see him go head-to-head with Faye (Phoebe Tonkin).

Meanwhile, we'll also meet Eben (Sammi Rotibi), who is described as "an ominous and authoritative leader of a dangerous group." Don't expect any Jake-style floundering, though -- Eben is bad news and he won't be swayed from his cause.

Both guest stars were first reported by TV Guide. Graziadei is best known for his work as Daniel on "The Young and the Restless. »

In Time review

1 November 2011 1:43 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

Can Andrew Niccol match the brilliance of Gattaca with his new sci-fi film, In Time? Here's our review...

Andrew Niccol’s debut feature as writer/director was 1997's clinical, Huxley-esque Gattaca, which he then immediately followed with scribe duties on the rightly revered The Truman Show. These two sleeper-classics, as well as story work on The Terminal and a further writer/director credit on underrated Nicolas Cage vehicle Lord Of War, mark Niccol out as one of the most consistently interesting filmmakers working today.

In Time, Niccol's latest project as both writer and director, ostensibly sees him return to an area closer to that of Gattaca. Another examination of human nature when faced with the inexorable march of scientific progress, In Time eschews many of that former film’s more stoic elements, instead aiming for a more scattergun, blockbuster approach.

Niccol presents a future where time, not money, is currency. »

Weekend Box Office: Puss In Boots Tops with $34 Million in Record Halloween Weekend

30 October 2011 9:59 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Dreamworks Animation’s Puss in Boots was poised to have a killer weekend, but Snowtober had other plans. The 3D Shrek spinoff still claimed the top spot with an estimated $34 million, but a freak snowstorm in the Northeast and Halloween weekend led to this weekend being fairly soft overall. Despite the slow-goings, Puss still managed to earn the record opening for a Halloween weekend, narrowly beating out 2006’s Saw III which took in $33.6 million. The sci-fi actioner In Time opened to an as expected $12 million, while the weekend’s other wide release The Rum Diary made a mere $5 million. Hit the jump for more. Title Weekend Total 1 Puss in Boots $34,000,000 $34,000,000 2 Paranormal Activity 3 $18,500,000 $81,300,000 3 In Time $12,000,000 $12,000,000 4 Footloose $5,400,000 $38,400,000 5 The Rum Diary $5,000,000 $5,000,000 Puss in Boots performed way short of its cousin predecessor, Shrek the Fourth, which opened to over $70 million last year. Sound Off: Andrew Niccol's Sci-Fi Film 'In Time' - What Did You Think?

28 October 2011 8:32 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Now that you've seen it, what did you think? The new film from Gattaca and Lord of War director Andrew Niccol formerly known as I'm.mortal or Now, officially titled In Time, finally hits theaters this weekend. Justin Timberlake & Amanda Seyfried star in a futuristic world where all humans stop aging at 25 and will live on only depending on a clock in their arm, which has also become the system of currency in a corrupt world. But is it any good? How is the concept versus the execution? How are the performances from Jt and others? If you've seen it, leave a comment with your own thoughts on Andrew Niccol's In Time! To steal some of your minutes, I just saw In Time last night, and it was a total let down. It started okay, but by the end I was wondering "how did it get this bad?" The whole »

[Review] In Time

28 October 2011 6:45 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

Andrew Niccol thinks ahead, with a track record of socially-relevant films with a entertaining through-line. His latest film, In Time, only offers a third of the equation – entertainment. And while that is perfectly adequate in most cases, we expect more from Niccol. His Gattaca is a sophisticated sci-fi drama unlike any other film in the sci-fi genre, while Lord of War is a superb exploration of moral contradiction. Even Sim0ne, his weakest film, is a noble failure in terms of of Hollywood satire. It’s ambitious and takes chances, something In Time never gets around to.

The biggest fumble is the mismanagement of a great premise. The idea of time being used as currency is immensely intriguing. How did we get to the point of making such a boneheaded decision? A character in the film mentions how this system would lead to overpopulation issues – which any sane person should »

Review: "In Time" Sexy Cast Aside, It Might Not Be Worth Yours

27 October 2011 1:14 PM, PDT | The Backlot | See recent The Backlot news »

In the sci-fi, futuristic "thriller" In Time, no one ages past 25 and time is a form of currency -- which sounds pretty cool, but actually causes more problems than it solves.

Timberlake plays Will Salas, a blue collar worker living in the lower echelons of "time" wealth. Even so, he has the heart of a lion. He saves a reckless "time billionaire" (played by the dreamy Matt Bomer) from a bunch of thugs led by the sleazy Fortis (Alex Pettyfer -- am I sensing a Magic Mike connection here?) Bomer's character thanks him by giving Will all of his time wealth -- which is over a century.

This unexpected time windfall turns out to be more of a curse than a blessing and creates several complications for Will. He winds up on the run not only from Fortis and his band of thugs, but also from the official "Timekeepers" who »

Box-Office Oracle: 'Puss in Boots' Will Slay 'Paranormal 3' and Timberlake's 'In Time'

27 October 2011 12:24 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Another easy breezy call at the top, with the feline family film poised to dominate. Still, questions remain, intrigue can be found, and we owe it to ourselves to break this thing down. Ready? Let's hit it! Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 3 Weeks In A Row Puss in Boots Clearly, numbers around the Shrek openings are germane to this conversation. The big green ogre has opened at $12k, 26k, 30k, and $16k per theater, respectively. The progression of the franchise (now downward) is also apparent, but it's also important to note where the series started out.

So $12k per theater is where I like this one, even with the 3-D and IMAX boost. It's getting healthy reviews, plus Brad liked it, which augers well, but parentals wade into new franchises tentatively. The holdover potential is there though, as is the sequel opportunity. You could go as high as $60m if you were feeling bullish, »

Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried Interview - In Time

Justin Timberlake (The Social Network) turns action star in In Time, the sci-fi action thriller written and directed by Andrew Niccol (Lord of War) and co-starring Amanda Seyfried, Cillian Murphy, and Alex Pettyfer. In Time takes place in a future in which people stop aging at 25 and then after hitting that birthday, they have only one year left to live. That is, unless they have earned more time and can buy their way into an extended lifespan. In this world, the richest people are basically immortal and those without much of an ability to earn additional hours live their lives hour-to-hour.

Timberlake plays a time-poor man who is wrongly accused of murder after a wealthy stranger gives him all of his remaining hours and then kills himself. Taking Sylvia (Seyfried) hostage, he goes on the run in an effort to stay out of the hands of the authorities and stay alive. »

Interview: Andrew Niccol Discusses Trucks of Compromise, Humanistic Absurdity, and ‘In Time’

24 October 2011 9:55 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Andrew Niccol is one of the few futurist filmmakers working today. The man knows how to be ten steps ahead of everyone else. His concepts are imaginatively absurd, but in that absurdity, Niccol generally finds a sense of humanity. Not only that, also signs towards where we could be heading. Like In Time, the concept of The Truman Show seemed outrageous at the time, and yet that film has become a sad reality. Despite his forward-thinking, Niccol doesn’t have the easiest time getting films made. It has been six years since Lord of War, and a few projects between that time fell through for the filmmaker. Why? Because Niccol, as he himself says, is always creating expensive concepts. Now, he’s finally got one of those not-so-cheap concepts made. With In Time being his biggest film yet, he pointed out how like on every film, there are “trucks of compromises.” Even »

Justin Timberlake talks In Time

24 October 2011 10:00 AM, PDT | Cineplex | See recent Cineplex news »

For Justin Timberlake, it was a chance to stand on his own two feet. At least until he wound up on crutches.

Shooting the science-fiction thriller In Time, the pop star-turned-actor was performing a stunt when he injured his calf, forcing the production to shut down briefly. Not that he — or his big-screen ambitions — were hobbled for long.

In fact, only a few days after the incident, Timberlake was determinedly promoting last winter’s CGI/live-action comedy Yogi Bear (he was the voice of Boo Boo) despite having to do so on crutches. (Determinedly because, frankly, I've seen actors cancel interviews because of "allergies," "colds" and "migraines.")

Several months later, Timberlake, 30, is healed, laidback and speaking to journalists about In Time at San Diego's Comic-Con. "The crutches were a direct reflection of Andrew's direction. He beat me down," Timberlake says while, it should be noted, sitting beside writer-director Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, »
