A Good Year for Directors Who Aren’t Straight White Men

30 December 2009 11:07 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The position of director has long been dominated by heterosexual, Caucasian males in Hollywood. For evidence of this, one need only look at the Academy Award for Best Director nominations over first 81 years of the award’s existence. Only three times have female directors received nominations (Lina Wertmüller in 1976, Jane Campion in 1993, and Sofia Coppola in 2003) and only once has an African-American director been nominated (John Singleton in 1991). Homosexual directors have had more luck, with such notable openly gay directors as Rob Marshall, Gus Van Sant, and Pedro Almodovar gaining nominations, while John Schlesinger and George Cukor even won the award. Still, directing in Hollywood is not a particularly diverse game. So it is noteworthy when, as Variety points out, “it’s possible the best-director noms might not include a single English-speaking, Caucasian, straight male”.

For a look at the directors who might instead seize this year’s Oscar nominations, »

'Nine'

30 December 2009 9:05 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Nine begins with hips swaying in silhouette as the overture introduces the lovely women who both distract and drive master director Guido Contini (master actor Daniel Day-Lewis). From his sultry sexpot mistress Carla (Penelope Cruz) to his prim, Audrey-Hepburn-esque wife Luisa (Marion Cotillard), the bevy of beauties enter a scaffolding-filled set in Guido's mind. The director is struggling with his next project, but his lack of inspiration is suffered by the movie itself as well. Nine may be a frothy, flashy film filled with Hollywood's top talent, but it never quite achieves the heights its pedigree promises.

The film's biggest asset is clearly its cast. Day-Lewis, Cruz, and Cotillard would be enough for any normal film, but Nine greedily adds Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench, Kate Hudson, Stacy Ferguson, and the grand donna of Italian cinema, Sophia Loren. It's an embarrassment of riches that would make a more modest film blush, »

Martin Campbell Is Putting Together Award Winning Crew for The Green Lantern Production Team

29 December 2009 6:27 PM, PST | FusedFilm | See recent FusedFilm news »

A regular conversation that occurs between me and my blog buddies is how Martin Campbell, the director of The Green Lantern, plans to tackle the production of one of the most unique comic book adaptations ever. For those who are unaware the look and style of Gl is that of Iron Man meets Star Trek in terms of tone and action (it spends time between space and Earth) but there is the fantasy elements that put it as sort of a Lord of the Rings in space thus giving it that uniqueness that most other comic book adaptation don’t have.

Even though Martin Campbell is the director he has to rely on very talented members of the production to create and design these worlds. Well now Superhero Hype is reporting that many of the key crew members that are already on board, and there’s no lack of Oscars among them. »

Captain America Ready To Roll Without A Cast And Good Green Lantern News

29 December 2009 5:42 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

According to the fine fellas over at Fangoria, principal photography for the as yet un-casted “Captain America” is set to roll in June of 2010. That’s pretty soon. No casting news yet. Will it be Sam Worthington? He’s in everything else. Why not? I’m thinking the good Captain is going to have to be pretty buff so 6 months is going to have to be enough time for someone to get in fighting trim. In other superhero news, the production team is in place for “Green Lantern” starring Ryan Reynolds. These guys are good so I’m hoping the Green won’t be another Wolverine. Thanks /Film for the bullets. Cinematographer Dion Beebe (Memoirs of a Geisha, Chicago, Equilibrium, Collateral) Production designer Grant Major and costume designer Ngila Dickson (Lord of the Rings trilogy) Art director François Audouy (Avatar, I Am Legend, Watchmen, Transformers, the Spider-Man” trilogy) »

Martin Campbell Picks Best of the Best for 'Green Lantern'

28 December 2009 9:05 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) is wasting no time in putting together an A-list crew to help him bring Green Lantern to the big screen. It's a virtual 'who's who' of Oscar talent, from cinematography through to production design.

Dian Beebe, who previously won an Oscar for his work on Memoirs of a Geisha and was nominated for Chicago has signed aboard as cinematographer, while production designer Grant Major and costume designer Ngila Dickson, both of whom won Oscars for their work on Peter Jackson's 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy, have also joined Green Lantern.

Art director Francois Audouy, who previously provided concept art for Avatar and I Am Legend, and worked as art director for Watchmen and the first Transformers, will bring his talents to bear on the DC franchise.

We're still waiting to hear who will be cast in support roles opposite Ryan Reynolds, and indeed, who »

Captain America Begins Filming in June, Green Lantern Hires Oscar-Winning Crew

28 December 2009 12:44 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

As today is a slow news day, I thought I'd pass along a couple small superhero film tidbits. Fangoria has learned that Joe Johnston is readying The First Avenger: Captain America for a June 2010 start. Sounds like we'll begin hearing casting news shortly. Meanwhile, there might not have been any recent casting developments for Warner Bros' adaptation of Green Lantern, but SuperheroHype has learned some of the Oscar-winning crew hired for the production: Cinematographer Dion Beebe (Memoirs of a Geisha, Chicago, Equilibrium, Collateral) Production designer Grant Major and costume designer Ngila Dickson (Lord of the Rings trilogy) Art director François Audouy (Avatar, I Am Legend, Watchmen, Transformers, the Spider-Man" trilogy) Sounds like the team is really shaping up. »

Nine Movie Review

28 December 2009 9:09 AM, PST | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Director Rob Marshall is an oddity of the directing world that is rather more difficult to figure than people might expect. With little to recommend him apart from choreography work and a variety of Broadway credits before going into Chicago, the popularity of that film gave him some degree of credibility. His Memoirs of a Geisha is actually a superior effort, though not as widely accessible. Now he brings us Nine , already of staggering positive reception. Apparently he will next be coming at us with the next Pirates of the Caribbean film. Go figure that. But, somewhere along the road from Chicago to Nine, something has gone wrong. While I only found Chicago slightly above-average overall, there was a definite idea, direction, and purpose. It was the sort of thing you could hardly fault people for liking much more than I did. The musical numbers were sewn in quite well, »

Martin Campbell Assembling An Award-Winning Crew For Green Lantern

28 December 2009 8:05 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Even though we don't yet know any of the names that will be part of the Green Lantern cast beyond Ryan Reynolds in the lead role, director Martin Campbell isn't wasting any time getting the below-the-line talent assembled. Superhero Hype is reporting that many of the key crew members are already on board, and there's no lack of Oscars among them. Dp Dion Beebe won a statue for his work with Rob Marshall on Memoirs of a Geisha, while production designer Grant Major and costume designer Ngila Dickson were both winners for Return of the King. Perhaps the most exciting crew member, though, is the one who hasn't won an Oscar-- Francois Audouy just finished doing concept art for Avatar, and was also the art director for Watchmen and the first Transformers, movies that may have their flaws but look great throughout. Of course talented people working on the set »

Green Lantern Gets An Award-Winning Crew

28 December 2009 7:51 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Apart from Ryan Reynolds as the titular green-costumed hero, we haven’t had any casting confirmations (although we’ve had some speculation, particularly about the villain and the love interest) for the upcoming adaptation of The Green Lantern. We do know, however, that Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) will be handling the directing duties on the film.

But what about the rest of the crew? Well, the guys over at SuperHeroHype are reporting that Campbell has been “silently” working to pull together an award-winning crew to bring Green Lantern to the big-screen. We have the details here for you so what are you waiting for, read on below!

Firstly, Green Lantern – the first movie being produced under the new DC Entertainment banner – will be shot by award-winning cinematographer Dion Beebe, who won an Oscar for his work on Memoirs of a Geisha in 2006 (he was previously nominated for Chicago, too); for the look of the movie, »

Martin Campbell Getting Award-Winning Help For Green Lantern

28 December 2009 6:49 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

While director Martin Campbell has yet to finalize the cast for his upcoming Green Lantern adaptation, SuperHeroHype reports he has enlisted some award-winning help for the production side of things. Campbell will be working with production designer Grant Major and costume designer Ngila Dickson, both of whom won Oscars for their work on The Lord of the Rings, as well as cinematographer Dion Beebe, who won an Oscar for Memoirs of a Geisha.

With such an impressive crew surrounding him, Campbell now has to make more casting choices than just Ryan Reynolds in the lead role. Campbell still needs to chose between these 5 actresses for the lead female role, and he'll have to choose fast, since Green Lantern heads into production this March in New Orleans.

Bachchan was the 'paa' of all makeovers in 2009

27 December 2009 5:45 AM, PST | Hindustan Times - Cinema | See recent Hindustan Times - Cinema news »

Talk of Bollywood makeovers in the year gone by and Amitabh Bachchan's Paa look beat everyone hands down. Though Bachchan had little competition from 'sardars' Saif Ali Khan and Ranbir Kapoor, one and almost all appreciated the Big B's act. Bachchan plays Auro, an intelligent, 13-year-old boy with an extremely rare genetic defect progeria that causes accelerated ageing and thus physically, he looks five times older. Christien Tinsley of Hollywood films like Nutty Professor-ii and Memoirs Of A Geisha fame was roped in to make to create the Auro looks, which required hours of makeup. Nine Thoughts I Had On... Nine

19 December 2009 7:24 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

In lieu of a traditional review of Rob Marshall's Nine, which opens Friday in limited release and then expands a week later for the Christmas box office rush, I've opted for random thoughts, nine of them, strung together. This is a survival tactic. I've spent so long obsessing on the movie prior to its release (prior to even its casting given my enthusiasm for the mid-Aughts Broadway revival) that a review proper couldn't contain me. It would kill me. I got no choreography, I'll just have to spit out my words however they come out. Picture them flying from the blog like sand from Fergie's fingers

Beeeeeeeeee Italian. Beee Italian....

Story. The plot of Nine, as you may know, is about a film director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) suffering an artistic crisis: His production team is ready to shoot, his costume designer (Judi Dench) is ready to stitch, his »

'Pirates 4' May Shoot Next Summer

16 December 2009 9:40 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Nine director Rob Marshall has messed around in the world of traditional narrative film before, with Memoirs of a Geisha, an exceedingly beautiful picture to look at, but not a tremendously involving one. However, Pirates of the Caribbean brings with it a different set of expectations.

Marshall was, for some, a surprise choice for the fourth movie, which won't include Keira Knightley and/or Orlando Bloom, two losses the franchise can easily overcome. But Marshall tells ComingSoon we shouldn't count our pirate chickens just yet.

"We're still trying to figure out if it's going to all happen," he said. "If it happens - I think Johnny's doing [The Tourist] with Angelina Jolie in the spring - so if it happens, we'll start in the summer, and we'll see. I'm excited. If it happens, it happens. I'd be thrilled. I just love Johnny and I'm excited about the genre." »

SAG Awards 2010: Predictions – Best Ensemble

James Cameron’s Avatar: best long-toothed ensemble blue cast The nominations for the 2010 SAG Awards will be announced tomorrow morning by Michelle Monaghan and Chris O’Donnell. As usual, expect some surprises. In the past, SAG voters — only a relatively small group of SAG members vote on the nominations — have made unexpected choices such as Dev Patel for best supporting actor in Slumdog Millionaire, best actress nods for Ziyi Zhang in Memoirs of a Geisha and Patricia Clarkson in The Station Agent, and best ensemble nods for 3:10 to Yuma, Hairspray, and Hustle & Flow. My SAG Award predictions are probably as accurate as the ones I made for the Golden Globes a while back. In [...] »

Gong Li Joining Wong Kar-Wai's 一代宗师 (The Great Master)?

8 December 2009 5:07 AM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Bit of the good ole Chinese-style publicity stunt today on Chinese news portals, with more casting news concerning Wong Kar-Wai's upcoming Yip Man biopic 一代宗师 (The Great Master). It's not the news most everyone was waiting for - a confirmation on the Brigitte Lin issue, or lack thereof - but I guess it's good enough: the new name which is emerging is Gong Li, who would join forces with Wong for the first time since Eros. Local media reports indicated yesterday that Gong would play the head matron of a martial arts clan, but her management played coy, saying that they haven't received any offer, although - and here's the key - they're on good terms with Wong Kar-Wai, so they'd certainly be open to the idea of participating in the film. They say any final announcement will come from Wong's side, so it's probably a matter of time before ink is spilled. »

DC Flies Clooney Skies

7 December 2009 4:24 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Last year the DC Film Critics Association gave Slumdog millions (of prizes). This year they express their desire to fly George Clooney's friendly skies. I'm not here to judge (well not in this particular sentence) as I'm totally in love with Up in the Air, too. But then I just saw it and am still fanning myself from the heat coming off of Clooney & Farmiga. I need a little distance and a cold shower before I commit to any "best!" notions. Thankfully I allow myself that. Most organizations do not. Hence the hasty decision making.

I didn't share their nominees with you yesterday because I found them vaguely embarrassing, like the assembled journos all just came in late and frazzled having left their notes on the Metrorail. Instead of thinking it through they scribbled the names of Oscar buzz du jour types and called it a day. My point »

A Couple New Commercials for 'Nine'

29 November 2009 11:50 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

We finally have some commercials for Nine, which is pretty distinguishable from the other Best Picture hopefuls because of its major league cast and it's the only musical anywhere near the running. If you've been following our coverage of Nine, you won't see a whole lot that's new in these ads, but if not, you'll be clued in as to why this film has been on the Academy Awards radar for a while.

To me, the focus should be Dion Beebe's cinematography. He was nominated for director Rob Marshall's Chicago, and won a couple years later for Marshall's Memoirs of a Geisha, so maybe the second and third time is the charm. The movie has good odds in the supporting actress category, too, but I think this is the one category where it has the biggest advantage over the competition.

You can see a little bit of what »
