Lycanthropy, and Claude Rains...
30 October 2006 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

a good atmospheric film for Halloween. Universal made many of these films through the 50's and 60's.

Lon Chaney as Larry Talbot/"The Wolfman" manages to project a sense of tragedy and hopelessness in this atmospheric film. Claude Rains as his father is excellent. Rains mentions that all man is capable of good and evil, in varying degrees. A subtle inference to Freudian theory, as in the 1950's there were indeed patients diagnosed with "lycanthropy", the delusion that they were a wolf/primitive spirit.

Bela Lugosi portrays a gypsy who is murdered by Talbot after a woman is mysteriously attacked by a wolf. The cast of characters make the film worthy, and there are no films today which have this quaint sense of nostalgia, old time superstition and an interesting theme.
