Storyline

This new high-speed adventure's plot depends on which team you choose. Team Sonic (Sonic, Tails and Knuckles) get a letter from Eggman saying that they only have 72 hours until Eggman unleashes his new and improved Metal Sonic doomsday device on the world. Meanwhile, Rouge is flying around and finds Shadow (yes, he's back!) and E-123 Omega capsulized. Omega is furious that Eggman disposed of him, and Shadow is rendered of all memory, and he wants after Eggman to find out what really happened to himself. Thus, Team Dark is made. Amy reads about Sonic going after Eggman in the newspaper. Amy is mad at Sonic because she wasn't brought along. Big The Cat is once again on the lookout for his frog Froggy, and Cream The Rabbit is looking for Chocolate, Cream's Chao's twin. Here comes Team Rose! Team Chaotix (Vector, Espio, and Charmy) has formed a detective agency and has been offered a huge pay if they investigate a mysterious case. Vector sees this as an opportunity to outsmart Eggman and ... Written by pkthunder30@comcast.net

Good, not good enough!
14 February 2004 | by (Wemyss Bay, Scotland, Milky Way) – See all my reviews

"Sonic Heroes" is the latest installment in the popular "Sonic the Hedgehog" series of games. While the game has much to recommend it there is also a lot to dislike.

Firstly the "Team" system is very bad. Having to constantly switch character in order to clear a level is not a good way to go since Sonic games usually involve clearing the level in the fastest possible time. Also the decision to include Cream and Big from earlier Sonic games hampers game play since you spend too much time focusing on non essential things like re-learning attacks.

It seems Sonic Team were trying to re-invent Sonic for a modern gamer with the decision to excise much of the "cheesy" factor in order to make the game harder and slower (A level takes upwards of ten minutes to clear this time out!) There are four teams. Team Sonic, Team Dark, Team Rose and Team Chaotix, each have their own unique identity but each has to clear the same levels making the game rather tedious!

While the graphics are beautiful the music and gameplay are rather sub-par, the usual tunes are ditched in favour of more modern beats and this serves to downgrade Sonic's status as an icon and again it seems Sonic Team are pandering to a new audience rather than trying to equate existing Sonic fans!

Aside from superb graphics, inspired level design and an element of toughness that previously did not exist there is very little to recommend this game to existing Sonic fans, however people who are experiencing the franchise for the first time will love it!

3/5!
