Some of the BBC's biggest names have joined the backlash against the broadcaster's decision to close its youth channel BBC3 after 11 years.

The BBC will confirm on Thursday that the channel is being axed by director general Tony Hall as part of a plan to make £100m of savings, much of which will be pumped into drama and children's programming.

The channel, which was home to critically acclaimed shows such as Gavin and Stacey as well as less regarded ones such as Hotter Than My Daughter, will continue online, with many of its programmes available to watch on the BBC iPlayer.

BBC Three is an easy target: Why its move online makes me angry

5 March 2014 8:27 AM, PST | Digital Spy | See recent Digital Spy - TV news news »

BBC Three has always been an easy target. Right from its inception, the channel came in for criticism - whether it was people turning their noses up at Snog, Marry, Avoid or middle class, middle-aged mutters about where the licence fee was going.

So when the news broke today that BBC Three is being axed as a regular, broadcast channel - and moving solely online - I wasn't surprised. BBC Three has released a first-look trailer for stand-up comedian and singer Nick Helm's new comedy series Uncle.

Picked up by the BBC after initially airing a pilot on Channel 4, the show follows the story of a dissolute out-of work musician, who forges an unlikely alliance with his 12-year-old nephew Errol.

Speaking about the plot, Helm said: "Across the series, Andy learns to be less selfish, and to be more responsible... basically, he grows up.

"At the start of the series, Andy is a typical 30-something man-child: he's completely stuck in being a teenager and he's made to look after his 12-year-old nephew, who is old before his time.

"They learn from each other - it's all very moral."

The comedian claimed that the project was inspired by West Anderson's Royal Tenenbaums, and said that it fitted into the history of Baby Cow comedy productions.
