Death of Assumpta - and the end of the show
15 February 2015 | by See all my reviews

It's 2015, and I'm watching Ballykissangel for the first time, and have enjoyed every minute, right up until Series 3, episode 11, The Reckoning.

The reckoning for WHAT? Is this supposed to be divine punishment for Peter falling in love with a woman, or for Assumpta falling in love with a priest? It's nothing but raw, random tragedy, in a storyline that has always been MUCH lighter.

As far as anyone should be concerned (and clearly as far as I'm concerned), Assumpta was half the show, and her relationship with Peter was the other half. It reminds me of Wild at Heart, where Tompkinson's wife is killed in a wildfire halfway through that show, which never really recovers. Of course we're supposed to ask "where does Peter go from here? Where does the show go from here?"

And my answer must be, "who cares?" As far as I'm concerned, without Assumpta, there is no show. I'm surprised to see that it continues for 3 more seasons. I'm surprised that anyone would want to watch it anymore.
