From the opening scene of woman's torso gyrating to the funky sounds of an Orishas track, you know you are in for a great ride! The simple grittiness of daily life in Havana walks through this entire film and the characters it touches are truly memorable. This is one of the few films I put in my "Gem" category (that's one star better than "Classic") of documentaries.
An absolutely sumptuous black and white film that deals with a legendary Cuban club "in the 'hood." Superb footage and editing, coupled with a deft eye for subject matter and a wicked soundtrack make this film is a classroom for documentary filmmakers. Having been to Havana and to La Tropical personally, I can say this film truly captures the hot, sweaty essence of the Cuban people's "joy of life!"
